New Global Legal Studies Master's Program at Universidade Católica Portuguesa

New course utilizes the "Total Law" teaching method

Jul 5, 2007

Universidade Católica Portuguesa in Lisbon will be offering a new Master's course during the 2007-08 academic year in Global Legal Studies.

According to the university, the new program "has been entirely designed to fit in the demands of the global teaching of law and the legal practice in a global world, where the borders of legal systems are waning." The program is comprised of Anglo-American Law, European Law and Transnational Law courses.

In addition, the program utilizes the "Total Law" method, which according to NYU law professor J.H.H. Weiler, "represents a bold pedagogical and intellectual break with the traditional ways of teaching Community Law."  Professor Weiler and other proponents of the "Total Law" methodology, including Miguel P. Maduro (Advocate-General at the European Court of Justice), José de Areilza (Instituto de Empresa),  Damian Chalmers (LSE), Kieran Bradley (European Parliament) and Imola Streho (E.C.J.), will teach the European Law course.

The course will be taught in English. Applications are still being accepted.
