Cardozo or University College of London
Out of curiosity, if nothing else, would a LLM from Univerity College of London (a top 5 U.K program) or Cardozo (a top 50ish American program) be better in practice? In academia?

Cardozo is in New York and is known for IP law, but not so much for its general LLM. Here is more info:Wed Jan 25, 2006 06:06 PM www.llm-guide.com/board/9015 www.llm-guide.com/board/1118 UCL is a top school and is strong in many subjects. Try the board search for more info. New York or London? Difficult choice... |

In terms of international reputation I would clearly go for UCL. It may be different if you want to work in New York after the LLM (very difficult to get a job though) or sepcialize in IP.

In my humble opinion, I believe the better question is where you want to live/work during and after your studies. Fri Feb 10, 2006 03:51 AM While Cardozo might not be well known internationally, it is known in the U.S and certainly N.Y. employers. I attend a law school in California, so I'm not biased. I believe Cardoza to have a good reputation among U.S. attorneys. At the risk of sounding ignorant, I have never heard of the College of London LLM programs. My point is, if New York is where you want to be, go to Cardozo. Don't buy into the hype. It is more about what you want to do with your LLM and where you see yourself after that counts(more so then rankings). Again, this is just my opinion and I mean no offense to UCL or it's students. |

Thanks for the replies. What if we throw George Washington University into the mix? It's obviously above Cardozo in the U.S. rankings, but would a degree from UCL be more beneficial in academia? In practice?

Most UCL courses are taught both from the Academic and Practice perspectives. For eg. International Finance is taught by Prof. Graham Penn (Partner @ Sidley Austin) and Dr. Rawlings (Reader at UCL); Secured Transactions is taught by Michael Bridge (Prof at UCL) and Richard Calnan (Partner at Norton Rose); International Environmental Law is taught by Philippe Sands Q.C. (Partner @ Matrix Chambers) and Tim Swanson & Catherine Redgwell (Profs @ UCL). There are lots of other examples like these so UCL covers both the Academic and Practice sides of things.Sat Feb 11, 2006 09:36 PM But like a lot of folks have said, a decision on whether to go to school in the US or in London will ultimately depend on your plan afterwards. |

Thanks mate, that's a good point. But a lot of us still aren't quite sure what to do after Uni.;trying to keep as many options open as available for later on...
