Enlightenment on Choosing Law School
Hello,Fri Feb 10, 2012 07:36 AM I have received offers from UCL in Business Laws, QMUL in Commercial Laws and Durham in Masters of Laws. Now seek help from enlightened people on arriving at a correct decision. Guidance in these aspects a) Reputation b) Quality and Standard of Faculty and Teaching c) Prospects d) Peer Quality. UCL, QMUL or Durham?
Hi! I'm enrolling at QMUL, and although it's not my area of expertise, I do know QM is brilliant for commercial law and related areas. Their Centre for Commercial Law Studies is extremely good and I've found it's widely recognized among senior staff at law firms. Most of my undergrad classmates practice private law and definitely have a preference for QM. Fri Feb 24, 2012 07:11 PM Regarding rankings, I think the Guardian's is very good (www.guardian.co.uk/education/table/2011/may/17/uni…) but do remember to take all rankings with a pinch of salt, and try to focus on finding professors and research projects that are a good fit for what you really want to take out of your LLM! |

UCL, QMUL or Durham?
a) Reputation: All three are very good. Probably UCL is the most externally recognised (certainly outside the UK). But all three rate highly in the tables. Fri Feb 24, 2012 09:24 PM b) Quality and Standard of Faculty and Teaching: It depends on the courses. I think QM scores more highly, particularly in student satisfaction. But it's marginal all round I'd say. They're all supber institutions. c) Prospects: I don't think it makes a difference (for many careers in the UK). More important is the result you get, and your motivation for doing it. d) Peer Quality: It depends who you class as peers. I'd probably put UCL and QM above Durham for Law. For transparency, I should say that I applied to both UCL and QM, but decided to enrol at QM (it was a tough decision though). [Edited by qualifiedlawyer on 24 Feb 2012] |
