Hi there,
Is there anybody out there who has participated in the EMLE program offered by different European Universities? Did you have a positive experience in general? I do not really get the program structure, can you choose to go to any university for each of the three terms? Hope to hear from somebody..
Cheers

Hey there-

I am trying to figure out if this is a program I would like to do myself for next year. I found some student experience statements on their website under the "student experience" heading.

I also spoke with a professor from Erasmus over the holidays and she seemed to think that you picked a different university each trimester, but after reading the website it seems like you can maybe stay in one of the cities for 2 of the 3 trimesters.

Hi Michael and george
When I did the EMLE program we were able to choose between Rotterdam and Hamburg in the first term and between Gent and Hamburg in the second term. Only for the third term were we given the option to go to any of the 15 participating universities. But I think nowadays you can also go to Bologna during the first and second term.

I am also interested in the EMLE Program, but am wondering whether I have any chances to get admitted.. Does anyone of you know how tough the selection process is? My concern is my lack of a law degree. I have a BBA (with some economics) and am currently taking a masters course in finance. Any comments?

Besides graduates in Law or Economics, also applicants with a first degree in business administration or in social sciences may apply under the condition that the completed study programme includes a substantial number of courses in law and/or economics. The above requirement with respect to employability in the labour market equally applies.
Students who have not yet graduated but expect to graduate before July of the year of application can also apply for admission to the EMLE programme. If such a student is selected for the programme, this is under the deferring condition that (s)he sends a copy of the diploma ultimately mid-July.

Hi i've been accepted for the fall 05, I graduated in bologna and i can tell you that as law school it's one of the best in italy, maybe the first among the state universities. Besides the town has a great cultural life and u'll surely have fun there. From the other side don't ask me if the EMLE it's worth the cost, because i'm trying to discover it myself!

Hi,
I've got a doubt about the EMLE and I'd like anyone to post a comment.
The EMLE is open to bachelors too, I already got a master degree in law, i wanted to take an llm or a master in law and economics to redirect my skills toward economics, to better my deutsch (i've chosen hamburg as 1st destination) and to give some "international" appeal to my curriculum vitae. therefore i thought that EMLE was a good opportunity, but actually i fear it will appear a weird choice, somehow as studying twice for getting a level I already own...
any comment?
any info about the ranking or the utility?
bye!

Hi solsaul,
I did the EMLE in 2001/2002 and I had similar ideas about the program the program as you have. The thing is that the program is not so much a program with 50% law and 50% economics unlike one might think. The discipline of "Law and Economics" essentially deals with the question how legal questions could be solved applying economic principles rather than legal ones (efficiency, transaction costs). So basically it is a subdiscipline of law.
When I did the program there was only one lecture on economics (Microeconomics) all the other courses dealt with the economic analysis of different fields of law. So, if you are looking for a master program on economics I would rather consider an MBA, especially since you already have a master degree in law.
That being said, I have to say that I enjoyed the program very much. Students get to study in 3 different countries in just 1 year which is a lot of fun and if you know what is expecting you the program content is quite interesting as well.
Hope that helps,
J

Hi Solsaul,

As you already have a master degree in law, I don't think the best way to expand your horizons towards economics is by taking the EMLE course. On the other hand, as you said you would like to develop skills in the field of economics, you would probably find most of the MBA courses rather insufficient. I personally think that an MSc Economics is the only way to really develop a relevant tool-box for mastering the techniques used in the field of economics. An MBA only takes a general management approach with a little bit of everything (accounting, marketing etc.), and in my opinion is generally highly overvalued. Those are the kind of basic concepts every business student learns during the first year of an undergraduate degree. A highly scientific MSc Economics course is obviously more demanding but also more rewarding. Neither EMLE nor an MBA would provide critical appreciation of both the theory and practice of economics in the same depth.

hi!
julius and silja, thanks a lot for your comments. you look rather informed about the topic and, as i'm a bit confused and i can't find such a great help at my uni maybe i can ask you and anybody else a further comment.
I was aware about the topic of law and economics, i mean i knew what it was about. I thought that it could be useful in order to be taken by the legal office or in the risk management staff of a corp..
On more even though i speak english (toefl cbt 283) and deutsch I've never been to study albroad and i fear this will be an handicap for me.
My degree is a master degree, i mean that is higher than a bachelor. In italy with the bachelor grade you're not admitted to the bar, you need to take the full 4/5 years course, that's what i have.
my fear is that the EMLE is good for bachelors, but not for upper graduates, and it seems to me that you see it this way (is it so?).
This given, as this program could allow me to study in more than one uni do you think i would be such a great idiot to do it?
just In case, is there something that i don't get about llm and master? should they be taken only by the bachelors? Some of them request to be already admitted at the bar (they're the hardest ones, as the one in frankfurt) and they scare me a bit, but at least they seem to be a good way to an international firm.
Any info about the utrecht llm? it's one of the few ones for wich the application deadline is not already passed, and it looks very good.
thanks again.

ah... for he who has asked about the choice of the applicants for the fall 05 of EMLE ...the deadline for applications has expired and the choice has already been made, but if you've made it on time you should wait for someone of the chosen ones to retire and free some place.

Hi Livia, You dont need to prove any special knowledge of economics to enroll in the program, as far as I remember, but it is advised that you read some related books in advance (I didnt but dont take me as a good example ;-)). I dont know about the Erasmus Mundo scholarship but I think you can apply. As the program is partly financed by the EU I did receive an Erasmus scholarship so it should also work for you. Good luck!

We had one Mexican lawyer but no Brazilian. Most students were from different European countries but we also had some malaysian, Chinese and Israeli students, so in general it was quite mixed. The chances of being accepted are high if you are from a more "exotoc" country like Brazil and low if your are from Germany for example as there are many applications from this country (around 80 when I did the program, I was among the lucky ones..). The reason is that the program has a quota for the differnet countries therefore the benchmarks for some countries are higher than for others. I dont know anything more specific about the Erasmus global scholarship, sorry, but, at least for the German students, the Erasmus scholarship was automatically granted along with the acceptance to the program. So maybe its the same for you. Good luck!

HI julius, i gather from the discussion that you finished your EMLE and with am erasmus mundus scholarship as well. I am very interested in the program but i am opting for an LLM in Sweden where the tuition fee is free and i only have to worry about accommodation, which i am planning to finance through scholarship (maybe SI) or part-time work in sweden (depending on the availability or possibility of jobs for foreign students in Sweden). DId i get it right that EMLE is financed through erasmus mundus scholarship and that admission to the EMLE is an automatic grant of the erasmus mundus scholarship? so that if i get accepted to the EMLE, it will likewise be fully financed as if i am on scholarship? thanks.

Yes, I did finish the EMLE program but not with the Erasmus Mundus scholarship. I can only talk about the situation for German student (although I think it was the same for all EU students) and only about how it was in 2001/2002. The only tuition we had to pay was an administrative fee of 250 EUR (I guess its more now) and all of the German students automaticaly were granted the 'normal' Erasmus/Sokrates scholarship (which is quite low, around 100 EUR a month I think). As I said I dont know how it works with the Erasmus Mundus as this a new scholarship scheme that has only been introduced recently.

Dear Marina and Livia,

I'm currently studying in the EMLE programme and I receive an Erasmus Mundus scholarship. I can ensure you that you have good chance to get such scholarship, because there are few Brasilians and Argentinas with scholarship. Off course, it's not so easy to be admitted for programme and be granted with scholarship. But if you have good qualification and are lucky you will get it for sure.

I very enjoy this programme, the international environment and the Hamburg university, where I'm spending my second trimester and wish you good luck in your application. Deadline is very close.

As far as third country applicants go- I was told that the Consortium's board on admissions decides a list of candiates(those who have been admitted and those admitted with scholarships) in febraury and forwards the same to the EU for confirmation. The EU confirms/rejects the same based on criteria like geographical distribution of students etc. Applicants are informed i their name figures on the list forwarded to the EU. All the best! !

I think no matter where within the emle website you go, the address is always http://www.emle.org/index_org.html so just go to the emle site, click on "Application" and "Third Country Students". You will see that item (i) states:

i) In order to be able to make a final ranking of applicants who fulfill the application criteria, it might prove necessary to hold a test via the internet. In this test, the participants are requested to write an essay and/or answer questions on topics related to Law and Economics. The test will be made available through this website on a date and time that will be made known also through this website ultimately on January 31, 2006. Notice: there will be no test for the academic year 2006/2007.

rajkumarvpost: Re: E.M.L.E. Program

The Joint Selection Committee has received 265 eligible third country applications, while for third country students there are only 36 places available in the programme (25 of them receiving an Erasmus Mundus scholarship; 11 of them without an Erasmus Mundus scholarship).
>The Joint Selection Committee has made a ranking of all applicants, and has constructed three lists:
>(1) applicants who are admitted to the programme (36 applicants, 25 of them are nominated for an Erasmus Mundus scholarship);
>(2) applicants who are put on a reserve list, in case admitted applicants withdraw (89 candidates);
>(3) applicants who are not admitted (140 candidates).
>
>You belong to the first list.
>
>The final ranking was made on the basis of the following criteria:
>
> * Academic record: level and results of the previous study
> (bachelor, master or otherwise), level of the grades, number of
>      different studies and relevance of the studies for the EMLE programme;
> * Quality of the letter of motivation, e.g. does the applicant show
>      affinity with the topic of the economic analysis of law;
>    * Reference letters;
> * English proficiency.
>
>Many applicants have completed two or even more studies on a Masters level, in the field of law and/or economics. These applicants naturally ranked very high. As a result, applicants with one study and/or with a bachelor level only ended lower in the ranking.
>
>I congratulate you with your admission to the EMLE and your nomination for a scholarship. The European Commission has to approve the nominations, and we expect this approval half May, so then there will be a final decision on the scholarships.

E.M.L.E. Program
Sun Jan 09, 2005 02:13 PM
Hi there,
Is there anybody out there who has participated in the EMLE program offered by different European Universities? Did you have a positive experience in general? I do not really get the program structure, can you choose to go to any university for each of the three terms? Hope to hear from somebody..
Cheers

Hi Russ
Thanks for the link, actually I had already been on some of the university pages but could not find any personal experience student reports so if there is any EMLE alumni out there I would appreciate your comment.

"The first trimester can be spent in Hamburg (Germany), Rotterdam (Netherlands), or Bologna (Italy); the second trimester in Hamburg, Ghent (Belgium) or Bologna (Italy); the third trimester in either Aix-en-Provence (France), Haifa (Israel), Hamburg, Linkoeping / Stockholm (Sweden), Madrid (Spain), Manchester (Great Britain), Rotterdam (Netherlands) or Vienna (Austria)"
At least this is what they say on LLMGUIDE..

Hi! I'm new here, planing to take some LLM next year. I'm also interested in EMLE programme, and as far as I know, you can choose from some uni's, have a look here: http://www2.jura.uni-hamburg.de/le/Erasmus/pdfs/ academicguide.pdf
That's programme for the following year, but u can have some general idea.
Have anyone heard is it possible to get scholarship for this programme? I would appreciate any info :)

Hello everyone,

I am also interested in the EMLE Program, but am wondering whether I have any chances to get admitted.. Does anyone of you know how tough the selection process is? My concern is my lack of a law degree. I have a BBA (with some economics) and am currently taking a masters course in finance. Any comments?

Hi Silja, The EMLE Program is open for lawyers and economist, so if you are an economist you should not worry.

Hey,

Anyone out there starting the EMLE program in fall 2005?
I got an offer, but am still fudging.. My first choices of the locations were Bologna, Hamburg and Madrid. Is it really worth paying 7500 Euros? Any opinions?

One criteria for admission is the affinity of the aplicants prior study/work experience to the needs of the programme. There is no on particular field of study hich has been prescribed...so if you can connect your education with the aims of the programme in your SOP you will be in!!
Hope this solves your quandry

Hi there. I apologize but I'm really in no position to say something about applications from EU students, nor applications in general, since I'm also an applicant myself (though I already know I am admitted, along with my term placement and scholarship status--big relief).

However, what I suggest everyone should do (including everybody else who have inquiries above this message) is to email the program director at your first-choice/first-term university. That, or email Louis Visscher from Erasmus University. He was the one who emailed me that I was admitted and he's been extremely helpful, providing informative responses to my queries.

Dear hanh
There is a special type of visa which allows you travel to all EU countries, I dont know if we could take that visa..otherwise you will have to take the visa of each of the countries. There is no need for you to worry , in this case the prestige of the programme and the fact that you have been a scholarship by the EU must be enough to take you through.
otherwise you could explain the situation to the EMLE board and change your preferences to manchester, bolgna and france.
Cheers

Visscher emailed everyone (bcc) who was nominated for a scholarship and asked them to email me if they want to be included in the group. Jeanette probably got that email.
