I recently was admitted, and have attempted to register for, the LLM Tax program at the above-described institution. There are only three tax courses available and three is the requisite number to obtain the specialisation. The materials from the university indicate the tax specialisation is currently available, but no courses appear to be currently offered/available. I don't quite understand this anamoly. Is there anyone else out there facing this quandry, or registered in the LLM tax specialisation programme? The student registry has not responded to my e-mail of two weeks ago....the auto-generated response indicates one should expect lengthy delays in e-mail correspondence. Hi, I know my question does not directly relate to your post. I was wondering, however, how you could utilize your external LL.M in the US. I am also interested in applying to that program. I hope to use the External LL.M. in one of three ways. As I am returning to the taxation area after a several year hiatus, I hope the LL.M. will help gain entree to an IRS Chief Counsel position. They indicate they prefer an LL.M. tax. I realize most will attend a US school, but I am not too mobile until after I have the LL.M. I may also consider foreign opportunities in the UK or EU. In addition, I am betting that the future will bring more status to distance learning due in part to videoconferencing and other technology that is available. I am gambling that others will see the cost benefit, especially after several more years elapse. At that point, should widespread acceptance occur, I may try to get into academia. Finally, a legal textbook author I know told me to just get the LL.M., it does not matter the field, if you wish to publish legal education materials...it helps with the publishers. I look to the UoL because it is from the 4th ranked UK university, and the foreign degree is just a part of the new global economy. One last thing, the risk is minimal....tuition for the whole program cost $10,500 US.

Hi, thank you for the detailed and prompt reply. Yes, I agree with you it sounds like a pretty smart move to do the LL.M at UoL!! I have done extensive research on the external programs for the past few days and can say now that I am sure that you will benefit from it.Thu Mar 30, 2006 03:45 AM As for myself, I think I will first pursue an LL.B at UoL. As I am in a Ph.D. program now and have an M.Phil from Cambridge University, I will be happy to do the external LL.B at UoL and then go from there. Again, thank you for sharing your plans with me! Hello guys, I've just read your posts and I was wondering if maybe you could help me a little bit. I'm a 28 years old peruvian lawyer, and I'm interested in a taxation LLM programe in UK for 2007. I was thinking of applying to the LSE programme. Is this the best choice for a tax oriented LLM? What other schools should I be considering? Finally, are there good job opportunities in London? LSE reputation seems to be very good here in the States no matter the subject of your studies. I understand Queen Mary has a good tax programme. Best of Luck

Dear Hamburg: The UoL suggested I wait until next year to commence the tax specialisation since all courses were not yet available. They even offered to refund my fees which I had paid in full, in advance. I accepted, and the UoL refunded my fees in full last week. It seems as if they are still working out the bugs in the new program. There are also rumors on this board that the UoL intercollegiate LL.M. may be discontinued. If true, that decision may affect how the distance learning LL.M. is administratively handled. Best of Luck. |
