LLM at UCL as an external student
Hi guys hope you are well. I am thinking of continuing my education and have come across the external LLM program that is offered by the UC (www.londonexternal.ac.uk/). Sat Feb 26, 2005 11:54 AM I know that UCL has a fine reputation. Also, it’s claimed on the website that when you study externally – LLM’s quality and reputation is not diminished… is that really so? Can you please give me some feedback on that? I am interested in Law and would probably study International Dispute Resolution or HR, however, I have no luxury of being a full time student and stop working (not mentioning the fact that I live in Canada…). I think that in my case this external program is a fine alterantive indeed. Also, do you know any reputable Philosophy, or Political Science programs that are offered externally? Russ what do you think about it all? Thanks in advance everybody! Regards, V. |

Don't get carried away with the reputation of individual Colleges at London.Sun Feb 27, 2005 05:19 AM The external program is from the University of London (as are all degree standards at London). Therefore, all degrees are standardised and it doesn't,(shouldn't) matter from which College. Everyone likes to go on about the LSE,Kings College,Imperial,UCL etc. In this case the UCL is the lead admin college in the External programme, that's all ! |

Thanks Kek. You are probably right about the different colleges. But what do you think about the validity of the externally obtained LLM per se? I mean; as far as you know would it be viewed upon as a ‘fully blooded’ LLM or not?Sun Feb 27, 2005 07:07 PM Regards, V. |

Yes,on an academic basis certainly !Tue Mar 01, 2005 04:53 AM Where you may miss out is the discussion groups and ideas..in teams etc...which is good for business development, networking etc. You have to balance taking a full year off and paying for your living costs vs the benefits. If you are already working,I can see no harm. You can spacialise in the LLM as the whole syllabus has been redesigned this year. London has a lot of experience. It's still academically equivalent and its the same letters after your name. The point is how you use it |

I am not sure about the transcript. However, since I know that the degree itself will indicate that it is external, I presume the transcript would say so as well.Fri Dec 09, 2005 06:21 AM In any event (I may be wrong about this), but I think on the external degrees, no College name appears. It's just 'University of London'. |

Re: Re: LLM at UCL as an external student
I believe the fact that you studied as an "external" student does appear on the transcript. However, at the same time, the University of London is quick to point out also on the transcript, that irrespective of the mode of study ie. external, the standard of qualification is the same had you studied on campus. Tue Dec 13, 2005 06:02 AM I don't think a specific college name appears; I've never heard of a London School of Economics "degree" per se, just the University of London degree. |

LLM at UCL as an external student
Tue Dec 13, 2005 08:52 AM Hi guys hope you are well. I am thinking of continuing my education and have come across the external LLM program that is offered by the UC (www.londonexternal.ac.uk/). Victor, A fellow Canuck here. Just wondering, did you complete an LLB already, either at a Canadian university or an external one, like the University of London's? If so, would like to hear about your background and experience. Thanks! |

LLM at UCL as an external student
I just emailed the UoL program about whether the external is on the transcipt and here's what they said: "Both the transcript and diploma (the piece of paper) state that the student was registered with the External System. Both also carry the names of the Lead Colleges, in this case Queen Mary and UCL."Sun Dec 18, 2005 06:30 PM |
