Hi, JDI. Thanks for the quick reply.Fri Mar 17, 2006 05:16 PM Are you from a common law country? If not, my understanding that you need to take at least two "US basic law subjects" (which can be covered in the LLM course) to be eligible for sitting for the NY bar exam. But anyway, I am thinking about signing up for a review course in advance, or at least buy the books first. Do you have any recommendations? Thanks. |

Hi LY,Fri Mar 17, 2006 05:36 PM I am already eligible to write the NY bar exam. I applied last summer and 3 months later they sent me a letter allowing me to take the Bar. I am from a common law country (England) so all I needed was a 3 year LLB. I'm thinking of doing the BARBRi course, it's expensive, but most people pass with it. I'm checking out Celebration Bar review as well. Not sure who to go with. Funny thing is, I may not even want to practice law in the classic sense, but I hear having a professional designation can be just as important as having an academic one (LLM). |

Thanks, JDI. You are right about the professional designation. Many in-house jobs require bar qualifications. I don't see much sense in that, but that's how it is.Fri Mar 17, 2006 06:14 PM Good luck to you at the course and the exam. I'll have to wait till I have taken the 2 subjects at NYU. I do have a degree from England but that was an LLM which I don't think counts for bar exam eligibility. |

Sat Mar 18, 2006 05:09 PM Is scholarship the same as financial aid? I've applied for the latter and I'm not sure whether no mention of scholarship in admission decision means no financial aid beind granted. Or maybe the decision is pending? best regards, K. |

Sat Mar 18, 2006 08:41 PM JDI: Got my package friday. No Global Hauser scholarship. I'm not entirely surprised, however. My entire application was oriented towards the Public Service Law LLM and the Global Public Service Law Scholarship, but after I applied (way back in December) I learned in mid January that funding for the Global Public Service LLM had dried up, and that those who had already applied could (a) get their fee back or (b) ask to be considered for one of the other programs. I selected the latte (b), but I have to say I would have put together different references / materials had I known earlier that Public Service LLM would not be offered 2006-2007. |

jw:Sat Mar 18, 2006 10:04 PM I'm sorry the funds dried up, the university should have been more responsible by warning you of this problem. I'm starting to have reservations about doing the LLM at all. Honestly, the acceptance package was more like a high pressure glossy sales pitch. I'm learning that an LLM is more of a degree for non- North Americans. If you want to work in the States (as I do) you either need a JD, or if that's not possible, membership to the NY Bar. Spending another year and 60k may not be worth the benefits. Taking a NY Bar course is about 2k with a two month investment of time. Then you can actually call yourself a lawyer in the US, and I think this commands much more respect from a wider range of employers, and is also a prerequisite for many government jobs. An LLM only works if your eventual goal is to teach, or be highly specialized (tax law for example). Or, have a job opportunity in a foreign country that requires it. Of course if you're young and have the money, it could also be a very fun year. But I'm in my late 30's and not wealthy! thoughts... |

yeah, but you need a degree from a common law country in order to be eligible to sit for the bar, so this is why there are a big proportion of people from Germany, France, China, etc. applying for a LLM. Sun Mar 19, 2006 12:02 PM It all depends on your background so you must first examine your needs and your current situation instead of following the crowd who may have different needs than you or in a different situation. I say this because I know there are quite a number of people from common law jurisdictions who already have a LLB (or even a JD) who want to join an LLM when they do not need it. In this situation, an LLM is only useful if you want to specialize yourself (tax program, etc.). If you already have a LLB and are already eligible to sit for the NY Bar, then indeed a LLM is not very useful for you! [Edited 19 Mar 2006 by yueping] |

I wonder how many American JDs apply for the NYU LLM... Whether or not it makes sense for people with a degree from a common law country to do the program, and whether or not it would help one's career as an attorney in the US, it's a great program that will definitely make you a better lawyer and give you a chance to explore your interests in a way that private practice doesn't.Sun Mar 19, 2006 04:33 PM I'm from Canada, just got accepted, and want to teach overseas. From what I can tell, the NYU LLM is well-respected internationally. I got accepted into the International Legal Studies Program, but I'm thinking of reapplying next year to the new NYU-NUS program in Singapore that starts in fall 2007. Is anyone else considering that? |

Sun Mar 19, 2006 07:35 PM JDI: Your hesitation makes sense. The only reason I have applied to do my LLM, is that I'd like to eventually teach law in some capacity, whether full time or in combination with my present practice. However, if teaching was not my goal, I would think very hard about borrowing funds to do an LLM, especially if there is a better way of practicing in NY (ie: your NY bar exam route). I know many people from McGill University who just write the NY bar and do fine, without bothering with an LLM. I enjoy my present job, I litigate in adminstrative, regulatory and constitutional law. But my reasons for seeking an LLM is to teach at some point. nickle: if you don't want your research associate position at NYU, I'll do it. ;) |

Sun Mar 19, 2006 07:42 PM ElleWood: I, too, am from Canuckstan. I've been accepted to NYU - among other places - but may defer for (a) more work experience or (b) reapply to certain scholarships, like the Fulbright. In any case, what is this NYU-NUS thing? You part of the year studying in Singapore, I gather? |

Sun Mar 19, 2006 09:08 PM Hi, JDI. Thanks for the quick reply. I used Micromash last year and I passed. the multistate questions that you do on your computer are a really good preparation. I did micromash about 4 hours a day for 6 weeks, I really didn't think it would be enough but it was. |

No, it's one full year in Singapore where you focus mostly on Asian Law and you can opt, once you completed the year, to have a 2 months course on American Lawyering in NY. |

Hi rippy,Mon Mar 20, 2006 12:35 AM I have done a lot of research on this and it seems BARBRI is the way to go. Although it is expensive, it is the most tried and tested with very positive feedback from students who took the review course. What is your motivation for doing the LLM aside from the possiblity of receiving the Dworkin scholarship? You can sit the NY bar if you have a 3 -year LLB from Ireland. |

Hi there! Did you apply for that specific scholarship and the research position? I received the electronic notification last week but still dind't get the package and am desperately collecting information about finacial aid, since I missed to apply to at least one of the available options (yes: pure neglience!). I would love to know if they just gave you the scholarship and the position or you worked hard on your application to get those. Of course, I am not stupid enough to believe the former is true unless I am told so... but stupid enough to ask! Thanks a lot in advance! |

Mon Mar 20, 2006 08:30 AM Hi rippy, I have already passed the NY bar exam, that is why I am in a position to recommend Micromash. I felt that barbri was too expensive for me. but it has a good track record I guess. I'm doing an LLM as I want to work in the UN - an advanced degree in law is a requirement for most of the positions I am interested in. |
