My previous post with the same title has become too large (101 posts) and too old... so why don't we just start a new one, always with the same question...
Did you receive any acceptance (or rejection) letter ?
If yes when, from which law school, with financial aid, etc... ?
Fresh news are more than welcome to most of us in this stressful admission process.
Thanks for your participation !

Has anyone actually called Harvard or emailed them to ask when the letters will be mailed for each category of applicant (admitted / rejected / waitlisted)?

The application instructions said decisions will be made before March 15th but keep in mind these instructions were printed a year ago.

Hello paisano. I see that some acceptances at HLS have been trickling over the past weeks but I haven't heard anything so far. As to my acceptances, they are as follows:
UVA: Jan 25
UPenn: Feb 17
LSE: Feb 25
Chicago: Feb 25
(no news of financial aid in any of them)

Still waiting for quite some more schools, though.

Who ever may be interessted:
I am a international applicant and applied rather late:
Duke: applied in January, acceptance some weeks later in February (they want an answer till March 15).
Virginia: applied January 30 (deadline was January 1...), acceptance two weeks later (they want an answer March 15).
Toronto (Can): same as Virginia
Applied, got confirmation but no answer yet:
Berkeley, Northwestern, PennLaw and Georgetown.
Do you have any further information about these Schools or recommendations, what to choose...? Duke and Virginia seems to be really countryside, is this bearable for 9 months?
Cheers

Just curious, did Chicago send you an email acknowledging receipt of the application and second email later telling you were complete?

Chicago acknowledged receipt of my application in December, told me I was complete in late February (two months later)!

I will call a friend who’s applying to Columbia and see if he has any news.

Yes it did. Well, actually they confirmed receipt of my application upon my request (Jan 18) and two days later they informed me that my application was submitted to the Adcom for review.

Douche_bag,

Did you apply to Northwestern? I was told that a decision would be released withing a 6-8 week time frame upon submission to the Adcom. It has been over 8 weeks now. I really don't want to call if not necessary. Any one in the same situation?? Any thoughts?

You prefer Northwestern than UChicago? Both are great schools, but Northwestern University has the nicest urban facilities of any law school in the US, period. Their downtown campus is gorgeous and in a stunning, stunning neighborhood. The UChicago law building is pitiful in comparison.

I didn’t apply there though so I can't help with your question.

Chicago rejection was by email, after I wrote to them that I wouldn't send them an official English translation of my grades. They didn't take too well to my homemade translation.

I got admitted to a few schools I prefer already so I didn’t feel like going through the trouble of getting the official document.

You meen that you got into Harvard with a "homemade" translation of your transcripts from Mali AND without having filled up completely your application form because "you did not know what to say".
No offence but still, I think that you must be kidding, or you're the son of the president of Mali...
I do not see any other explanation.

My girlfriend received an acceptance letter from Cornell yesterday. I know that it is not a scoop anymore that Cornell is sending acceptance letters, but still.... I promised to keep you posted.
I am still without ANY letter from my five law schools : HLS, Stanford, Berkeley, NUY, Columbia.
As we spend plenty of time on this forum, does anybody have an opinion on which of these law school I should choose, if by miracle, I was accepted to the five...
I think my first choice would be Stanford and HLS.... but still I like the 5 a lot.

rey,
Well my application was otherwise pretty solid! I wrote them a supplementary essay about being an underrepresented minority at Harvard (thank you essayEdge!) and I sent them my music CD, some headshots, and newspaper clippings of me. My three letters of reference were likewise very compelling. Two of them were from Harvard alumni (medical doctors who manage the local hospital here).

P.S. my homemade translation was actually very nice, and relatively truthful. It was also signed by a friend who works at the university. You should remember that when a school gets 1500 applications, they don’t go over the apps with a magnifying glass. They do a cursory examination, and they put you in one pile or the other. You just have to stand out. Universities want the best available candidates and are not necessarily sticklers to form.

Welcome to the wonderful world of Harvard, douche!

The hurricane of fame… You haven’t even enrolled yet, and already the principal ratifying institution of American elitism has had changed your life. Already, everyone on this forum knows your name and reputation. Many admire you (I certainly do) and even more are jealous or in denial (rey, whose cherished assumptions are revealed to be total bunk) … I don’t know which you find more satisfying?

All it took was a ”relatively” truthful translation of your grades (relative to what? your personal statement?) and voilà.

Harvard stands for one thing: measurable success. You’re already a success for outwitting the admissions process and, from now on, you’ll never be anything else.

Wish me luck on my SJD application!

Peggy and Wangjun:

Someone I know in England who is also appying NYU got the same invitation as Wangjun's. But it is going to take place in London. My guess is that they are organizing a world tour to promote the program or law school, so inviting the prospective applicants living in the country where they visit to join the event.

One thing I can guarantee that u will get when joining that event is not the admission to NYU but free dinner! :)

Good luck!

Peggy, congratulations for your admission to llm/kellog. It's such a nice program. Needless to say, Kellog is one of the most famous business schools of the States while NW law school has a very good reputation. But I didn't apply to the same program as you did for it is incredibly expensive. Mine is general llm.

Cornell's class of 2003-2004? You must be the classmate of my friend and juniors. There were three Thai girls going there that year. I am about to go to Cornell too in this fall 2005.

I have just found out about this discussion board (both of them). It seems pretty cool, but tends to make everybody a bit more nervous.

I would like to congratulate the people who got accepted where the wanted!

So far I have received offers of admission from UVa, Chicago and UPenn. I am still waiting to hear from NYU, Columbia and HLS (these three are actually my first choice ones).

Do you think that there is still a chance to get offers from these schools or all of the offers have already been made. As far as I understand the offers from NYU and HLS should be made about March the latest. But I don’t understand the situation with the term in Columbia.

R you all sure about the alphabetical order of the application review or what other systems could they use?

Anyone suggestion about these two schools would be truely appreciated.

Well, Miki, my colleagues who went to Penn before make me reconsider their Penn Law, giving the fact that Itacha is so small and remote. For my only one year in the states, i will be able to explore the US life in Philly better than in Ithacha.
Plus, being in philly is more comfortable to travel to the nearby big cities like New York, Boston or DC when in a break. Most important of all, they told me that a big city kind of guy like me will end up dying in Ithaca. So, tough decision to make now.

It also seems to me that UPenn is a wonderful place. I have received an offer from them 3 weeks ago. Now every week I get letters from different professors who were in the Admissions Committee in UPenn. All of them invite me to UPenn and describe why my application was especially interesting for them and what a great candidate I am. I know that probably everybody from the admitted students get this letters but I still think that it is very sweet. Therefore, although I have not myself made any final decision where to go I am sure that UPenn is a very nice place.

Hi all, just signed in. I was also accepted at Upenn a couple of weeks ago... I have also been receiving these emails about my impressive application... it looks like they really want the non-refundable US$ 500,00 which are due on April 1st. I was also accepted in London (UCL) and I am still deciding on the pros and cons of studying there...

still waiting for HLS, Columbia, NYU and UChicago...

NYU invited me for a conference just before Easter, but no acceptance so far.

I got an email from UChicago aknolowdging the receipt of my applicantion and saying that I should have an answer in 6 weeks.

Anyone from South America has heard from any of these?

Anyway, it was really good to find this discussion group...

Thank you all,

you are right, I decided for the same reasons against Duke and Virginia even I think that these schools are more personal and maybe even better. Some hours to NY by the Chinese-Bus is great and you can live for reasonalbe prizes in the Center and close to the School... Not like Manhatten.
Matreshka and Larthur:
I am jealous! I did not get these nice letters! (Well, maybe they will come because I applied very late and got the admission three days ago).
So, wish to see you all there ;) Or first in the discussion board for admitted students... Actually where are you from? I'm from Switzerland and as I wrote before: Only Berkeley could change my mind, but it is not very likely beeing accepted there.

The question has crossed my mind, too. Maybe you're right for some universities, but I don't think for example that universities with small programs (UPenn 80, Chicago 50..) have that on their mind.
And I wonder what you call a top 6 school.. Where do you put Chicago, Cornell, UPenn, Virginia? I guess at least one of 'em should be top 6, no?

Hi Joe75,

I received an admission offer from UMich 2 days ago by e-mail. I must say that the letter was very short and did not even mention the deadline for the answer to the offer. Therefore, I am still waiting for the formal letter from them by normal mail. People on this discussion board started receiving admissions to UMich from February and as far as I understand the letters are still being sent.

If you look through the forum you will see that some of the people got admitted to HLS a pretty long time ago (beginning of February) and some just recently. I hope that HLS admission process is not over yet and we still have a chance. At least HLS staff said that all of the decisions will be made by March 25.

NYU did not reply to anyone yet and as far as I understand it does not plan to do so before April 1. I think that they don’t have the rolling admission practice and make decisions on all applicants at the same time.

Luke/Dr. Jekkyl,

There is one issue that I can’t figure out myself. Although the programs at UPenn, UVa and some other universities are pretty small, it seems to me that all the people from this discussion board who applied there were admitted. I don’t understand how they manage to admit so many people. Of course it just may be a coincidence that all of the admitted students from these schools happen to be on this forum.

Does anyone get offer or rejection from UC Berkeley? One of my friends is still waiting for it and doesn't know how to respond to admissions from other schools.

There is one issue that I can’t figure out myself. Although the programs at UPenn, UVa and some other universities are pretty small, it seems to me that all the people from this discussion board who applied there were admitted.
Of course it just may be a coincidence that all of the admitted students from these schools happen to be on this forum.

That I was wondering about, too! I think it's strange, dunno if it's a coincidence.
My guess: probably they admit more students than they actually take into their program, because they know that a good part of those admitted will refuse their spot..
This strategy would permit them to inform more students about acceptation, which is good for the applicants because they know before the deadlines where they are admitted.
Well, dunno if that's understandable what I just wrote, but I don't know how to put it differently :-)

I agree completely with Dr Jekyll, they definitely admit more students than they have spots, because they know very well, that a big part of them will not accept their admission offer - for various reasons, financial reasons, and most likely because the student was also admitted to another school, which he/she prefers.

there's also another thing - there aren't really that many posters here, so it's not really that so many people were admitted, it's kind of an illusion. moreover, people who were rejected don't usually tend to speak about it openly (at least not all of them), on the other hand, it's always nice to share your joy with other people when admitted. that also might lead to a feeling that everybody has been admitted everywhere. that is certainly not true.

By the way, does anybody know whether it is better, in order to work in the US, to have an LLM from Cornell or Oxford ?

See you.

So far as I know, from a common law country, if you want to work in the US, UK LLM degree is useless. I went to UCL last 2003. But I still need a US LLM to take the NY bar exam. I am admitted to Columbia this year.

I
On another note, I was just informed by a friend who is a JD student at Columbia that the Admissions Committee will start releasing email decisions these week by batches of admissions, rejections and waitlists. Fellow Columbia applicants: cross your fingers and please let us know of any news!!!
Thank you very much wannaadmit for you accurate information on the admission process status in Columbia. Al least it was correct in my case.

I have just received an admission from Columbia. I am very happy cause it was one of my top choice schools. I hope that all of the people who are waiting for the Columbia replies will receive them pretty soon.

Still waiting for HLS and NYU. Have not heard from Berkeley.

Good mood for the day is guaranteed.

Maggie,

The NY Bar exam only requires a 3 year LLB from a common law country. An LLM in the USA is only necessary for non-common law countries and for states other than NY and California.

Hi everybody,
I've got offers from Michigan, Missouri-Columbia and UCL (UK). Still waiting for Cornell, Columbia, HLS, Yale, NY, Wake Forest, Cambrdige and LSE. Michigan has sent me several pages, including information on housing and so on. They want an answer before 29 March, but they say nothing about deposit, I just have to send my acceptance of admission by that date.
