Uk/Netherlands advice
Hi! I need an advice. I got an unconditional offer for LLM programme from University of East Anglia, University of Sussex and Lancaster University. Also i have an offer from Leiden University, the Netherlands. What is considered to be better? Is it worth studying in Uk if it's not Oxford, Cambridge etc.Sun Mar 19, 2006 03:46 PM I'm still waiting for an answer from Durham. i don't know which university to choose, problem they want answer as soon as possible. Leiden is more expensive, but it has good reputation. My first priority was Lund in Sweden, but they will answer only in June. What can you advice me? Thanks |

Hi leaWed Apr 12, 2006 06:38 AM I'm in quite the same situation: I have been accpeted by the uni of essex (UK) and to Leiden, and I'm still waiting for replies from the London universities. It's funny, looks like Leiden accepts everybody, three of my friends have been admitted too, though not on the same LLM. I guess Leiden is a better choice than the three UK unis you mentioned. It is a well-known university, close form Amsterdam and The Hague, with numerous international students. And it is great in International Law and, to a lesser extent, in European Law. I don't know about Lund to be honest. I personally will e faced with a real choice if I'm admited to a London LLM (KCL, UCL): then I guess I'll go to London. But Leiden, in my opinion, beats UEA, Sussex and Lancaster. |

Hi, Etienne! Thanks for your reply. Since i wrote this message, i got some more answers - from Essex, Stockholm and Sheffield Unis. The problem about Leiden - it's very expensive. Stockholm is free of charge. DIfficult to decide. By the way - i got e-mail from Leiden, they said that i should confirm that i accept the offer before 18 of April. Do you also have such condition? I am from France, and I'm applying for the MA in European Law, and thus only have to pay 1 500 euros (some LLMs are more expensive though). So money is not so much of a probelm in my case. Leiden want me to confirm before April 28, and I will be admitted only after having graduated from my french university (which is currently on strike, yes, this is France). I have heard good things about Swedish unis. As to Essex, I have actually studied there for two years in the course of a double degree in english and french laws. It is a great place for international students, even though Colchester is not so much of a heaven. Essex are excellent in Human Rights, really outstanding. They also have a good LLM in European Law. Which LLM are you applying for? Which country are you from?

I got an offer for LLM in European Community Law in Essex, LLM in European Law in Stockholm and Master of advanced studies in European Business Law in Leiden, LLM in Commercnial Law in Sheffield. I also have some other offers, but these four ones i'm thinking about. I'm from Latvia. I have already graduated and i have Bachelor degree in Public Law from Latvian University. Now i'm also studying for General Master in Jurisprudence in Latvia. I always wanted to go and study abroad, so i decided that to do LLM in specialized area abroad would be good opprtunity for me. About France - it's really hot there right now. I think the labour rules about young people were extremely unfair. Wed Apr 12, 2006 12:04 PM About Sweden - although they have good reputation, their master degree is considered to be undergraduate degree, not postraduate. I don't know why. |

Got a number of offers in UK/Netherlands. But what I am thinking about is between Leiden (adv LLM in PIL) and UCL. Any insights into these two schools, to their reputation as well as courses or education experience etc.

Look at the world rankings, look at the professors, look at the city, look at the prestige.........UCL 1000 times (except for the price off course)

I've to answer in a week, just few days for thinking about that, but I'm sure the money I'll pay they will be back soon. an LL.M from leiden has value. that's just my opinion. |

I'm in a strange situation: accepted in leiden, don't know yet about UCL, but since I've already studied in the UK for 2 years (at Essex), I guess that a Dutch LLM would make sense. In addition, for complex reasons, if I graduate in Leiden, I will also get an LLM from my french uni. Sounds like a good deal. And the UK unis always give they response very late, and by that time I will have to had accepted Leiden's offer.Fri Apr 14, 2006 02:00 PM However, for someone who has never studied in England, I guess that UCL makes sense.
