NYU Financial Aid
Hi guys,Mon Mar 20, 2006 12:40 AM Could you please tell me if there is any sort of financial aid, especially merit-based, for idiots that didn't apply to the hauser scholarship, etc. because of pure distraction? I'm looking for information about both grants and loans, but obviously prefer the former ones. I would be glad if any of you could tell me if, for instance, I may still apply for the hauser scholarship or anything of the sort. Please, skip the insults: I know I should've worked on the issue earlier... Finnaly, on my electronic notification (I haven't received the package yet) I was told that the package would inform me if I was awarded financial aid or not. Does this mean that even if you didn't apply for specific instruments you may still be awrded any aid, or am I just missing the point? I just thought strange that they mentioned the issue, since I did nothing on that respect... Thank you all! [Edited 20 Mar 2006 by gar33] |

Hi.. even i got admission in nyu but no scholarship... so even i have been researching on alternative funding... as far as their website goes, for international students the only sources are merit scholarships and private loans (otherwise there is an additional option of federal loans)... also depending on the specialization that you have opted for, there may be some additional scholarships.. not too sure about this... but i have applied for itnernatioanl legal studies and there doesnt seem to be any other scholarship for that....

hm...I have the same problem.Mon Mar 20, 2006 01:08 PM I was admitted to NYU intl. legal studies but did not receive any scholarships. NYU is just mad, they dont have any fin aid apart from two or three scholarships... There are no alternative sources of funding except for loans. Thats why I will not go there, since I cant pay it... Obviously, NYU is a school who does not care about people who cant afford it even admitted... |

Anyone received the Vanderbilt Scholarship? Are general studies LL.M. applicants eligible? Mon Mar 20, 2006 02:42 PM I got my package today, but no scholarship ...unfortunately! Along with my admission letter, I received an odd "admission" to the "Advanced Professional Certificate in Law & Business Program". The strange part is that I never applied for it, have no idea of what it is and why I was admited to it. Although I do have an interest in Law and Economics, I never spoke of business, management or anything like that in my application! Can any of you tell me what is the APCLB and if it is an interesting thing or just a clever way of making people spend even more money during the next year? Regards. |

I think everyone must have received "admission" to the APCLB. I was, in fact, quite excited about this program, but when I saw the absurd price (approx. 12,000, I guess) I gave up.

Mon Mar 20, 2006 06:51 PM Note that in the message they actually don't speak of fin aid but of scholarship (merit-based, I guess) that one will be informed of together with admission decision. But - if they do not grant any need-based assistance - it doesn't matter anyway... |

I think i have decided against going to nyu this year... it is just too expensive... but does anyone have any idea about the job prospects after completing a masters in international legal studies from nyu (it is ranked #1) and whether it would be worth taking a loan for that amount??

Maybe I'm out of mind...I mean, studying and living in NY costs a FORTUNE....and I got no scholarships nor RA...I'm just hoping it's worth it...*hope-mode* [Edited 24 Mar 2006 by anushka] |

Yeah, I'm in the same boat as a lot of you guys. Acceptance, but no scholarship. I'm contemplating not accepting this year and trying again in a couple of years, after I've done my articling (yep, I'm a Canadian) and have a couple of years of work under my belt. If I can't go to NYU because of money, that will suck royally!

Well, actually I got the scholarship (vardelbilt plus RA) after all. It is a long story (processed in few hours, however).Sat Mar 25, 2006 06:24 PM NYU is a fine school but I will reject the offer, since I was admitted to Harvard. So, there may be some money available for you guys, assuming they reallocate the scolarships on basis of rejections. Concerning your plans "3pointthreat", I would think twice before trying again in a couple of years. You must consider if there is any objective benchmark you may follow in the period between your rejection of this years' offer and your next try that assures you the scholarship. Otherwise you're wasting an opportunity to achieve a fine record earlier. Time matters: economists speak of the law of time preference to describe the fact that, ceteris paribus, "earlier is better" (it comes from Bohm-Bawerk, a 19th century Austrian economist). My short but intensive recent experience tells me that along a terrible margin decisions are based on pure luck! So, you may want to ask if you are able to capitalize your academic and professional record in the near future as much as making the awarding of a scholarship a certain fact. That is a hard task, no doubt... Moreover, you may want to measure your time preference. I am only 22 years old and got a rejection (or so I guess...) from Yale, my top-choice. I have reasons to believe I could try again in a one or two-year period with almost certain success. However, I don't want to wait. I understand that the difference between Yale and Harvard is less costly than a two-year waiting period. But that is jus me, of course! Regards. |

Of course. Do you want to know my credentials or the "long story" I mentioned in the other post?Mon Mar 27, 2006 06:07 PM I guess it is the story, but please let me note if otherwise. My mom opened the package, as I was away from home to attend a conference. She doesn't speak english very well (most people learned fench better than english some decades ago) and told me on the phone I was admitted to NYU but no scholarship. She described all the documents inside the package but still didn't understand the mention to vanderbilt. As I knew very little, in fact almost nothing, about the scholarship (the reason why I started this thread) I didn't asked for further details. She told me about the thing in the Businness School and nothing more. When I arrived home on wednesaday I learned bout the scholarship. I turned it down. I will go to harvard. The amazing thing is that I though the deadline to accept the offer from NYU was this friday, but it was last friday instead. I sent them an e-mail this morning apologizing and telling my story. Best Wishes. |
