Darin, you should inform NYU and Columbia ASAP that you will turn down the offer, because there are a lot of people in the NYU waitlist (like me!) and that would help us a LOT!

felipe R, I will also turn down NYU, but only subject to receipt of HLS package and satisfaction with the paper copy of their offer and other materials. I anticipate it will happen next week.

I must admitt that preferring Oxford over NYU or CLS is quite shocking. The perspectives you'll have with a US top law school LL.M. are quite interesting. The quality of education - best in the world.

Instead of arguing for Oxford’s BCL/MJur, I should rather ask a friendly but equally provoking question – what makes NYU or CLS of the “best in the world” quality? What is so shocking about Oxford? And what about Yale, Harvard or Cambridge?
I do not find Oxford lists dull – to the contrary, they are at the cutting edge, always demanding, thought-provoking and top of the game in the respective fields. As to the quality of faculty – no comments needed, indeed.
Most importantly, at Oxford there are tutorials. Very personal, in the group of three or four. Is the quality of discussion the same, e.g., in 450 or something class at NYU, without tutorials?

I am curious to hear what makes Oxford so “shockingly” not a good choice.

Why Oxford?! Are you kidding?!

Look, I will go to HLS and never applied to oxford, but you must be joking: Oxford is amazing! Oxford is, for some people and/or some areas of interest, perfecly rational. Top choice for most people interested in Jurisprudence, for instance... C'mon!!

First of all I did not mean to be impolite or question your common sense. I am really puzzled with your choice. Still I respect your point. Somehow I presumed that people who apply to US law schools for LL.M. program are interested in this particular title - of great practical value. Does Oxford give you the same/better chances as NYU (I mean Wall Street job or teaching position at any place that you pick)?

It is not the case that I disrespect Oxford, which must be a great place, but I find NYU much better (or let's say - even better) choice. It is purely personal - I would prefer any top 20 US law school over any European place. Why not Heidelberg, Bologna, Edinburgh? Europe is uncompetitive, static, self-focused, boring.

The quality of education in US law school is amazing (I had a chance to attend guest lectures and classes by both US and UK faculty). Tutorials ... I am somehow attracted by the larger classes, tension, competition - might be the personality issue. I've seen the Socratic method at work - and that is amazingly efficient.

As to the particular schools in question - if keen on jurisprudence - I would love to attend Dworkin's classes.

I have a very high esteem of NYU, for me it is the top law school in the world. Still it is hard question to answer - what makes it so special. Focus on international law, diversity, being in the center of the action, amazing international conferences/seminars.

But - aren't we for diversity?

That's my point exactly. Chosing Oxford means that the person in question is not really interested in US law school. If the choice was made out of Oxford, Glasgow, Edinburgh, LSE - no questions/comments. Applying to Oxford and NYU seems to be quite inconsistent. Thus why s/he applied to NYU at all?

By the way I'm going to HLS as well and never planned to apply to European schools.

Sorry to be impolite, but you're off your rocker. First off, Oxford (like Cambridge) is consistently cited as one of the best law faculties in the world, right up there with Harvard and Yale. The very fact that you compare Oxford to Glasgow or Edinburgh really shows that you're not well informed on this point.

NYU and Columbia are obviously great schools but it is quite understandable for someone to choose Oxford over them, as gar33's appropriate reaction to your unusual assertions demonstrated.

For example, from an academic perspective, it is quite easy to justify applying to an American LLM, as well as Oxford or Cambridge at the same time. And, in addition, from this same academic perspective one cans see why Oxford is the better choice (but of course this is debatable, depending on the person's field of interest, etc).

On the other hand, if I was interested in landing a job in law firm, I'd probably prefer an American LLM. But again, it is all up to the personal interests of the applicant.

I'm sure this post is going to start a flame war, which was never my intention. Rather, I felt obliged to take michalp to task for his bizarre ideas about the quality of education/experience that a student would obtain at Oxon.
