I'm from Taiwan and I'm in Trade Reg with IP concentration. I know now at least four Taiwanese going to NYU this year.

BTW has anyone decided to live on campus and submitted the housing application? I remember the deadline's May 15 for securing a place.

Since I started the thread I will introduce myself, i am from India and completed my LLB in 2004! I am in Intl Legal Studies!
@ postroc, I don't know if you have funding but I checked out the on-campus housing rates and they seem to be very expensive to me! Is there anyone opting for On-campus housing here? Some of us could even pool for an apartment. Would like to have your opinions on this! Thanks

Re housing, I consulted a current LLM student at NYU and he strongly recommended on-campus housing. He also said that although D'Agostino Hall is slightly nearer to the law school buildings, I should definitely take Mercer Residence, where the rooms are bigger. Below are some of his other comments: the safe, convenient, and collegial atmosphere will make one feel worthwhile with regard to the higher prices; the on-campus residences offer all you need; if you calculate 1000 Dollars for off-campus housing
plus Internet, Cable TV, highly expensive off-campus laundry facilities, and hundreds of other features you will have to pay for on your own if you live off-campus, you can conclude that it is not only easier but also cheaper to live on campus. Moreover, living separated from all the other LL.M.s and J.D.s is not that fun. I know only two fellow
colleagues who chose to rent rooms on their own and they are all not really satisfied. Besides, living in your own apartment is riskier since you almost cannot hold accountable your landlord. For all these reasons
I counsel you to opt for quality-of-life and security--law school housing.

I found the above comments quite informative and have (almost) decided to take on-campus living. Another other thoughts anyone?

Anushka, did you ever contact Columbia regarding your file? You made the right choice with NYU, far more respected in NY. I predict in a few years it will permanently surpass Columbia in the ratings indices. The administration at Columbia is the worst in the country, absolutely despicable given the experiences of those on this board. An embarrassment to the Ivy league.

Anushka, I`m planning to arrive the first week of August. As far as I know, you have to pay a daily rate if tou want to arrive before the 27th. Is that correct? What are your plans?

I am from Seoul, Korea, and will be in NY as early as mid-June...I will have I-20 from NYU SCPS American Language Institute (ALI) first, and then will transfer F-1 status to that of NYU Law upon completing ALI course...with my wife and two children, I think I must be settling in Newport, New Jersey...

well, I was originally admitted to general studies pgm, but I am also considering changing it to corporate studies because I am pretty much interested in the alumni mentor pgm NYU plans to begin with corporate pgm students...
anybody has any idea on the alumni mentor pgm mentioned in their admission letter?

Hi everyone, I'm from Ireland too and will be in the ILS programme. I'd like to open a few things for comment -

- Does it strike anyone as slightly off that estimated living expenses are $18,000 + 4/5%, yet rent for a room in campus accomodation (and it is just a room - not much living space!) will cost between $14,000 and $20,000 for nine months? This just does not compute with the cost of living in NYC and the added expense of law school attendance - i.e. books, laptop requirement. It strikes me that it might be easy to exceed their estimates... what does everyone think?

- Also wondering if many people are doing Intro to US Law, and would anyone like to share any views they have on course selection?

See you in the Village, everyone!

Hi, all. Just to share with you. I will live off-campus by taking the lease from a friend who studies at NYU and lives 30 minutes away by subway from the law school. Monthly rental, - US&500! I can take subway to law school very easily. Room quality is a little better, but much bigger than the dorm. I was told the dorm is really too too small. Not strange, MYU Law is really at the downtown. One of my fridend's husband was in NYU Law last year. He finished one year study and bar exam with USD 18000! Of course, living off-campus. He said it's helpful to communicate with average Americans and learn how they live and work. Knowing the soceity is vital for understanding the legal environment in NY. So, don't be afraid to living off-campus.

can anyone suggest if is there any site or reference to look for off-campus housing?
i would love to stay on-campus yet family members might come to NY often while I study there, and it'd be a problem if im sharing the apt with a fellow student...and bigger studios are assigned for "family housing"...and in my case its not that i'll be the entire year like that...so off-campus sounds a better idea...but since i dont know the city nor know anynone there, "googling" for an apt. seems a bit unsafe...
can anyone help me with this one by giving some reference as to where to start searching? Thanks a lot. See you at NYU.

Hey anushka ,
you can refer to this site ..newyork.craigslist.com/jsy/roo.

it seems to be a very popular site and very useful , lot of friends have suggested that to me...btw wud u mind sharing a bigger apartment if you decide about off-campus housing?
...one of my friends living in jersey city told me that a two bed room partment if shared would be around $600-650 per person! Hope this is useful

Hi everybody!

My name is Luciana, I am from Argentina and I too will be joining NYU's LLM in International Legal Studies this year.

As for housing, I will be living off-campus, in the upper west side, ´cause of course apartments are much cheaper and bigger. As aurora said, it is really striking that they suggest that the liviing expenses are aprox $ 18000 a year and yet the on-campus housing is much more expensive!!

Haven't made up my mind about courses yet! I want to do them all! Any good or bad reviews on faculty of the ILS program?

Regards,

Hi everyone - I will be attending NYU in the fall (international legal studies), assuming I can come up with the money -- it is a rather daunting task.

Oh, and I need to introduce myself, I suppose. I'm from Mississippi, and received my J.D. from the University of Mississippi this past May.

I look forward to seeing you all soon.
