Hello and Housing
Hello everybody, I am from Brazil and I will be attending the Corporation Law program.Thu May 04, 2006 04:36 PM Few points to consider as to housing: Living in the NYU housing you will have available a variety of things that will make your life easier (laundry, internet, TV - if we have the time - all in the same place). I need to check this but I think eletric bill, heating and other facilities are also included in the NYU housing price (not loundry). So maybe we can consider that for price comparison. Hope to see you all in NYC. |

Housing
Hi I have been accepted for the LLM-ILS and am from India. have been following all your posts regularly but have become a member recently.Thu May 11, 2006 05:45 PM Was wondering what housing options people are thinking of cause to me the on-campus option is seeming too expensive. Anyone else thinking of taking up off campus housing? Does anyone have any idea on the areas i should zero in on? Also is anyone thinking of taking up the Citi Asset loan option or has any idea about it? Would it be better than taking up a bank loan here? If any one has any thoughts on the above, it would be a great help Thanks |

Thu May 11, 2006 07:44 PM Hi I have been accepted for the LLM-ILS and am from India. have been following all your posts regularly but have become a member recently. Tanika, In relation to housing, I personaly believe housing on campus is more cost efficient - even if the numbers may be higher than a apartment rent off campus. As I mention before, living on NYU housing may offer facilities that an aparment will not. Now as to the loan, I might as well be applying for the CitiAssist loan. Please note that NYU advised the student to wait until June to request such loan. If you want more info. please acess the NYU web site and check the information proviede by the University in the Chat on line discussion. There is a lot of useful information there. If you dont know how to reach this part of the site, let me know that I guide you through. Marcelo |

I got the materials re choosing classes and it looks like the lottery registartion opens next week. But since it is a "lottery" am I correct in assuming that it makes no difference how early you register your class preferences? I understand that as long as you do it before the deadline you have an equal chance of getting the classes you want?Fri May 12, 2006 10:06 AM does anyone agree? |

Lottery
I have just read through all the materials and it says that the first lottery goes through everyone's choices on a random basis. I think this implies that they wait for everyone to submit their forms and then randomly allot courses without reference to how early or late you put in your form (or to the alphabet etc). So, 'yes' is the answer to Rippy's question I think.Fri May 12, 2006 11:18 AM But feel free to contradict me! Anyone else as delighted as I am that they have lifted the onerous requirements for core courses in the ILS programme? :) |

There are some big real estate brokers that you can use, but be prepared to pay a fee of 15% of one year's rent. You can try www.corcoran.com, www.citi-habitats.com, www.douglaselliman.com, or some others. I would try to use www.craigslist.com and try to find a no fee apartment. Just my 2 cents.

These firms were also listed in the NYU website, wonder if there is any other... You will be staying off campus also? Anyone here applied for D'Agostino? |

You can't walk down the street here without finding a real estate broker's office. There are tons of them. A good way to find others is to look at listings on craigslist and then follow the links to the broker's websites. I live in Brooklyn, about 30 minutes fro NYU.

Hello,Sun May 14, 2006 04:40 PM I am most probably joining NYU for the General Studies LLM. I really don't know whether off-campus housing is cheaper, but for me the social life and experiences campus housing offers is important - my undergrad hostel days were some of the best years of my life. Also - is the NYU estimate of USD1500 per month living costs a realistic estimate? Please tell me it's on the higher side and one can get by with half of that. |

I had a chat with someone in the financial aid office (who was v. kind and helpful by the way)... and he reckoned that rent, cost of books etc aside, that living expenses would be $350-$450 a month. Personally I think it might be a little low, esp. for someone who has to travel to the campus (that reminds me that a monthly subway pass is $74 per month) but it's still considerably less than $1500!Sun May 14, 2006 05:04 PM Is that what you wanted to hear Balaji? :) [Edited 14 May 2006 by aurora] |

Hey, thanks, aurora! If you add on-campus living and books to that estimate, you are looking at around $1500-1700 per month! That's not a small figure... |

Hi!Tue May 23, 2006 08:17 PM I didn' use a real state company. A friend of mine has been living in NY and she rented this apartment two years ago. I know she has a brother that lives in the US, though, which made it easier for her to find an apartment and with the guarantees they demand. Sorry I can't help. Luciana Luargentina, A friend of mine is looking for an place in NYC. Did you use any real state company to help u find your apartment? If so, can you give their web site or phone number? |
