Chicago v. NYU
I was accepted by both. Only the NYU offered $10,000 scholarship. My interest lies in antitrust law, as well as the corporate law like M&A. It seems that all my friends preferred NYU, but I am interested in UChicago for its small size and the J.D transferring Program. The deadline is coming, but I am still far away from my final decision.

NYU is now even opening a NYU-Singapore LL.M. Program. Having a lot of alums may give you some network or connections. However, from my experience as a lawyer for 5 years, I believe that lawyers can hardly become my client. Those who can be potential clients are MBAs, or other majors. U. of Chicago's MBA school is by far better than that of NYU. With such small number of classmates in U. of Chicago, I suppose I will have much close interaction with other LL.M.s and J.D.s. If it were to be JD, I would go to NYU, because New York is beter place to get a job. (even for JD, "per capita" job placement of U. Chicago is ahead NYU. www.calvin.edu/admin/csr/students/sullivan/law/res…) But, it is just LL.M.. thus, even Harvard does not guarantee a job in US. Some of my friends earned NYU LL.M. degree. and they told me that it's very difficult to get a job without any sponsorship program (e.g. an LL.M. student from a Japanese law firm may get a job in an US law firm which has some connection with that Japanese law firm). Further, look around some househunting website, you'll easily find it's twice more expensive in New York. Think about quality of life. Why not Chicago over Columbia or NYU? Why not? |

Chicago v. NYU
Hello. I am also in the same boat, but I prefer NYU to Chicago. Of course, I know that Chicago is a great school and provides us a small size of class. But, my interest is corporate law, especially M&A and Securities Regulations, and, unfortunately, Chicago seems not to be very strong in these areas. As you know, corporate law is a very practical law, whereas Chicago is undoubtedly very "academic". If you are interested in corporate law, I believe that you should go to NYU where there are a lot of famous corporate law professors such as Prof. Allen (former Chancellor of the Delaware) and Prof. Choi. Thank you, Attorney.ed. You offered me so much information about Uchicago that makes me feel like talking with an "attorney" of the UChicago admission office. Yeap, I am from China. As an old Chinese idiom saying, fewer is better. I am just a little afraid of the NYU's huge size. But I like New York when I was there, the life there is fun.
