I saw the story in that issue, it' was interesting...
Now the LLM program inTsinghua University is quite famous in China. Yesterday, one of my friends told me that she saw the cover story in one issue of "Legal Daily"(one of the major legal paper in China), in which it introduced the study lives of many LLM students here. She said she hadn't recognized that the program was so hot!

It seems that all professors for the program are quite famous there. A LLM student once told me that Pro. Betty Ho's Banking Law is quite practical for those who planned to be in that field...

The Master of Law Program (LL.M. Program) In Chinese Law at TsinghuaLawSchool, Beijing, China is the first formal legal educational program at the graduate level in China, which is designed and offered exclusively for foreign law students and legal professionals. It is believed that the best way of studying the legal system of a foreign country is to stay and live in the society while studying the rules and legal operations in that society. Therefore, this LL.M. Program does not only provide all courses and materials in English, but also the unique opportunity to get insight views of Chinese legal system and the society through close contacts with Chinese students, legal professionals and common people.

Hey. I am a LL.B student from UK. I am happy to tell you guys that i have been admitted to Tsinghua LLM in Chinese Law.

I got their email on 30th April. The admission staff sounds very nice.

Has anyone heard about his/her result yet?

Hi lawpat, I am receiving my JD this spring from the Ohio State Moritz College of Law and I'll be enrolling in the Tsinghua LLM program this fall. I've been planning on doing the LLM program for over a year; I spent some time studying in China previously and I'm very excited to return.

I have spoken with a few past Tsinghua LLM students and they all had positive experiences and offered good advice. Feel free to send me a message if you'd like to correspond.

Hi CJ, Nice hearing from you. Right~ Ohio State. Thats great. I am doing my final year of my undergrad degree - LLB in University of Durham, UK, and will be having my exams starting next week~!! Wish me luck!

Anyway, I haven't really thought about how long do I actually want to do the LLM in Tsinghua. What are the pros and cons?

U know people who did the LLM before? Really...? I honestly don't know anyone from Beijing or related to Tsinghua. I am from Hong Kong by the way. I have visit BJ though, it was.. about 10 years ago with my family. So, this will be my first time to study in BJ. And no doubt in one of the best Law school in CHINA! Same, i m very excited about it!!!!

Oh, do you watch youtube? I think there are a few videos posted by the 2006 batch. Quite interesting student life.

Hey everyone, I was also accepted to both PKU and Tsinghua and as many of you, currently debating on which program to attend.

My question is this one though, from your posts I understand that it is posible to get an intership while studying in PKU. Is this posible to do while studying in Tsinghua? I'm looking forward to the whole intership experience in China but I'm not too sure about investing 2 full years in Beijing.

Do you guys know wether Tsinghua also helps its students find interships while taking the LLM program?

Also, what's your take on the class schedules of both Universities? I've read about the compulsory classes and what not but I still don't understand wether we'll be in class all day long or however that is going to work.

Thanks a lot

Ani

I also recently was accepted into the Tsinghua Program. I am currently a JD candidate at Cleveland Marshall College of Law. I am doing the LLM in between my JD degree and will have to return to the US next fall to finish up 1 semester. I will be participating in an intensive language program in Suzhou all summer, let me know if any 08-09 students will be in China this summer and would like to meet up.

Best regards,
Bill

P.S. CJ-- We will definitely have to find a bar where we can watch some Buckeye football this Fall.

Sorry guys, I forgot to check back to this site for a while. Studying for the bar has drastically cut into the time I can spend casually surfing the web ;)

There was recently an exchange about the relative value of LLM degrees in China on the China Law Prof blog:

lawprofessors.typepad.com/china_law_prof_blog/ [See posts from 5/21 and 5/25]

And here's a link to a document prepared by the blog's author Professor Clarke:

lawprofessors.typepad.com/china_law_prof_blog/file…

The document does not have much substantive analysis of the programs, but it is useful to see how some members of the legal community perceive them. With the exception of a few contributors that have personal experience with the programs, most limited their evaluation to whether or not an LLM program would increase one's chances of landing a job at a large US law firm. So from that standpoint this is a very limited analysis. Strangely while everyone seemed to focus on how an LLM program might help (or not help) one get a job, nobody talked about how the skills one develops might help one actually be successful in that job and build a solid US-China practice. Personally I'm more concerned with the latter concern (building a successful practice), and with building hard skills rather than simply building a resume that fits the mold, so I am not too bothered by the overall negative tone of the contributors.

If people have specific questions about the program (such as the question above regarding internships) I would contact Tsinghua directly through the website. I have found the program administrators to be extremely helpful.

www.tsinghua.edu.cn/docsn/fxy/english/llm/llmoverv…

PS Bill, I'd love to watch OSU football while in China, I hope we can find it. A noon kickoff EST would put us at midnight Saturday night in Beijing. Maybe we can find some other Buckeye fans, as well. We only need four to do O-H-I-O!

PSS If you like the China Law Prof Blog, I also really enjoy reading the China Law Blog: chinalawblog.com/

I have applied and been accepted at Tsinghua. I received word via email. I have not gotten any snail mail, however. I have sent emails to both the the law school and the grad. school but have not heard back. As anyone gotten a hard copy of the acceptance letter? I also wanted to know if I can get a dorm room before I leave the states? Does anyone have any advice? Thanks
