Has anyone applied to an LLM in Tsinghua (not the program associated with Temple) and does anyone have any idea how many people they are accepting, and when applicants will know whether they are accepted or not?

Also, how reputable is the program exactly, and would taking an LLM in China be more rewarding than taking one in Hong Kong? Do firms in China and Hong Kong regard the LLM from Tsinghua or let's say HKU highly?

Thanks!

Dublinication: LLM in Tsinghua

Basically in mainland China Tsinghua and Beijing U (Peking U) inspire awe amongst everyone and graduates are seen as being elite ; the best of the best. When it comes to foreigners though its a different story evidenced by the number of foreign language students enrolled in China's top universities (Tsinghua, Beijing U, Nanjing U, Fudan, Jiao Tong etc.) ; its very easy for a foreigner to get into a good Chinese university for a language course but I don't think that Chinese people generally realise this. If you're ever planning on doing business in China I'd say the Tsinghua degree would really impress people. The campus is great too ; nice architecture, big open spaces, nice area of Beijing and the law school is located right in the heart of the campus (though they wouldn't let me inside the building to have a look). Any Hong Kong university is very highly regarded in the mainland (though of course some more than the others). As for taking an LLM in Beijing being more rewarding it all depends on what you want out of it. Its going to be easier to learn Mandarin in Beijing, Beijing is full of history and culture and the cost of living is a lot lower but the trade offs are the pollution, the censorship, the lower standard of living and less of an international feel also the transportation isn't that good but that's all changing as the Olympics approach. Living in Hong Kong would definitely be easier though more expensive. I seem to remember though that the Tsinghua programme was extraordinarily expensive for China - $20,000 or thereabouts, in contrast taking a Mandarin language course in Fudan or Jiao Tong universities, (ranked 4th and 6th in China) - 20 hours of lessons per week for a year is around $2000 so i'm not sure how they justify the huge cost.

The LLM program at Tsinghua, Beijing, China has accepted in the past two years more than 30 full-time students and about 20 exchange students (for one semester). All together, more than 25 students have completed their LLM study and received LL.M. degree from Tsinghua Law School. It is the best LLM program in Chinese law in China.

I concur with Jack's statement. The Tsinghua LL.M. program is by far the best program and the best value for a foreign law practitioner. The courses are practical and the information is timely. But, I must also say the program IS demanding. The volume of coursework is high, but that is part and parcel of the learning experience. No pain. No gain. I assure you, you will gain alot from this program and it will be worth it. Good Luck!

Hi Guys,

I was accepted into the Spring 2008 class for the Tsinghua LLM program starting in Feb. I am from Australia and don't have much idea of how good the program is, its reputation (considered by local, HK and also Western standards), and what the courses are exactly like. Also I'm not sure how it stacks up to Beida's program. Can someone please provide some clarity around this? Would appreciate any and all of your insights as I am one confused person!

I personally feel that Tsinghua is energetic, dynamic and pragmatic. I also strongly believe that Tsinghua’s style of hard working, moving fast and adhering to practice would drive Tsinghua law school to sooner leave others lagging behind.

Tsinghua as the best in country also aims high at being the world class university by 2020. LLM offered by the law school is one of Tsinghua’s showcases, apart from the MBA offered by the School of Economic and Management. This year Tsinghua encourages other 7 schools to offer degrees taught in English inspired by the models of LLM and MBA.

Last Friday, Tsinghua law school held a successful lecture. The lecture's title is The International Criminal Court and Post Conflict Politics in Africa. The brief introduction :
the International Criminal Court is now approaching its fifth year of operation. In that time it has begun investigations in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda, Sudan and the Central African Republic. This talk considers the early operation of the International Criminal Court, with particular reference to the Court's impact on politics in Africa. The talk considers the Court's domestic impact in the Congo, the tension between peace and justice in Uganda, and the difficulties it is facing in Sudan. More broadly, the talk reflects on how international courts, such as the International Criminal Court can influence political outcomes, stability and governance in weak states, particularly those in the great lakes region of Africa.
Professor Burke-White holds a J.D. from Harvard Law School and a Ph.D. from Cambridge University in International Relations.

Meiguo JD: LLM in Tsinghua

Hi lawpat, I am receiving my JD this spring from the Ohio State Moritz College of Law and I'll be enrolling in the Tsinghua LLM program this fall. I've been planning on doing the LLM program for over a year; I spent some time studying in China previously and I'm very excited to return.

I have spoken with a few past Tsinghua LLM students and they all had positive experiences and offered good advice. Feel free to send me a message if you'd like to correspond.

Hi CJ, Nice hearing from you. Right~ Ohio State. Thats great. I am doing my final year of my undergrad degree - LLB in University of Durham, UK, and will be having my exams starting next week~!! Wish me luck!

Anyway, I haven't really thought about how long do I actually want to do the LLM in Tsinghua. What are the pros and cons?

U know people who did the LLM before? Really...? I honestly don't know anyone from Beijing or related to Tsinghua. I am from Hong Kong by the way. I have visit BJ though, it was.. about 10 years ago with my family. So, this will be my first time to study in BJ. And no doubt in one of the best Law school in CHINA! Same, i m very excited about it!!!!

Oh, do you watch youtube? I think there are a few videos posted by the 2006 batch. Quite interesting student life.

Lic.Ani: LLM in Tsinghua

Hey everyone, I was also accepted to both PKU and Tsinghua and as many of you, currently debating on which program to attend.

My question is this one though, from your posts I understand that it is posible to get an intership while studying in PKU. Is this posible to do while studying in Tsinghua? I'm looking forward to the whole intership experience in China but I'm not too sure about investing 2 full years in Beijing.

Do you guys know wether Tsinghua also helps its students find interships while taking the LLM program?

Also, what's your take on the class schedules of both Universities? I've read about the compulsory classes and what not but I still don't understand wether we'll be in class all day long or however that is going to work.

Thanks a lot

I also recently was accepted into the Tsinghua Program. I am currently a JD candidate at Cleveland Marshall College of Law. I am doing the LLM in between my JD degree and will have to return to the US next fall to finish up 1 semester. I will be participating in an intensive language program in Suzhou all summer, let me know if any 08-09 students will be in China this summer and would like to meet up.

Best regards,
Bill

P.S. CJ-- We will definitely have to find a bar where we can watch some Buckeye football this Fall.

Meiguo JD: LLM in Tsinghua

Sorry guys, I forgot to check back to this site for a while. Studying for the bar has drastically cut into the time I can spend casually surfing the web ;)

There was recently an exchange about the relative value of LLM degrees in China on the China Law Prof blog:

http://lawprofessors.typepad.com/china_law_prof_blog/ [See posts from 5/21 and 5/25]

And here's a link to a document prepared by the blog's author Professor Clarke:

http://lawprofessors.typepad.com/china_law_prof_blog/files/chinese_llms_for_foreigners_v2.pdf

The document does not have much substantive analysis of the programs, but it is useful to see how some members of the legal community perceive them. With the exception of a few contributors that have personal experience with the programs, most limited their evaluation to whether or not an LLM program would increase one's chances of landing a job at a large US law firm. So from that standpoint this is a very limited analysis. Strangely while everyone seemed to focus on how an LLM program might help (or not help) one get a job, nobody talked about how the skills one develops might help one actually be successful in that job and build a solid US-China practice. Personally I'm more concerned with the latter concern (building a successful practice), and with building hard skills rather than simply building a resume that fits the mold, so I am not too bothered by the overall negative tone of the contributors.

If people have specific questions about the program (such as the question above regarding internships) I would contact Tsinghua directly through the website. I have found the program administrators to be extremely helpful.

http://www.tsinghua.edu.cn/docsn/fxy/english/llm/llmoverview.htm

PS Bill, I'd love to watch OSU football while in China, I hope we can find it. A noon kickoff EST would put us at midnight Saturday night in Beijing. Maybe we can find some other Buckeye fans, as well. We only need four to do O-H-I-O!

PSS If you like the China Law Prof Blog, I also really enjoy reading the China Law Blog: http://chinalawblog.com/

For me, she has been very helpful with setting up the details, such as visa, accommodations, etc.

Best of luck to you, hope to meet you in Beijing this fall.

I'm going to Tsinghua in the fall for a semester of the LLM thing before coming back to finish my JD.

I'm stressing out because I have yet to receive any official welcome letter/visa info, etc... and I'm leaving for China in 4 weeks! With Visa issues this summer, I'm worried it's going to be a big mess.

I've contacted Tsinghua via email, but they have been less than impressive -- assuring me that I will receive a welcome package by early July and now being away from July 6-Aug 17th.

Anyone know if I can just apply for a regular visa and change it there? I don't have much faith in their operations.

I'm not from Tsinghua (doing my LLM in Peking Uni) but I think I can help you. :) We had short term students over too (from UPenn, Columbia, Canada, etc) and the visas they got were F visas. I think you'll need the "Notice of Admission" from the school to get a six-month F visa, so I think you need to get the Tsinghua package before you can apply for your visa. Also, when you apply for your visa, make sure to pick the F visa that will allow you to stay inside China for six months. A couple of students were over here who had double entry F visas valid for six months but would only allow them to stay in China for 30 days each visit (their mistake, not Peking Uni's because they ticked the wrong box on their visa application). They ended up having to shell out hefty fines and not being able to leave in time for the xmas holidays.

Re applying and converting, I think if you apply for a regular tourist visa (the L visa, which I think is valid for just a 30 day stay inside China), I don't think you can get it changed to an F visa. You can get an extension of the L visa, but the longest extension you can get is 30 more days. I know that this is the "official" rule (as of six months ago; rules are in a constant flux, much like Chinese law, haha!) but I know that some people were able to get around this (not sure how).

Lastly, are you sure that you have to be in Beijing in 4 weeks? in Peking Uni, school opening is postponed to late September. I imagine that it's the same thing in Tsinghua.

I'm going to Tsinghua in the fall for a semester of the LLM thing before coming back to finish my JD.

I am currently in Suzhou studying Mandarin and I am on a 90 day Visa. I recently talked to Tsinghua and they said I need to goto Hong Kong to get the X-Visa. I believe the law recently changed because of the Olympics. If anyone is in the same position and needs to go to Hong Kong, please let me know. I am planning to go around August 15.

I was planning to go Tuesday, but I only have 2 days. I thought you could pay extra money to get 2 day service. Am I wrong on this? I just need to get back to Suzhou and take my Chinese language exams before I head to Beijing.

Also, is everyone staying at Tsinghua dorms? I am getting an apartment, but would gladly throw in on a 2-3 bedroom if anyone is interested. Either way, I plan on getting one in Wudaokou with satellite TV, so everyone is welcome to come and watch some western TV, especially college football.

Meiguo JD: LLM in Tsinghua

Hi all, I am in Beijing, checking out the Olympics before school begins. I plan to stop by the law school tomorrow, so if anyone has any questions feel free to email me and I'll try to ask and get back to you. My email: cjw12321 (at) yahoo.com. Also, I'm thinking of taking a trip outside of Beijing later this week, either a day trip or maybe to Dalian or Qingdao, so feel free to email me if you're around and interested.

If anyone still has yet to get a visa, I went through a service called visarite (www.visarite.com/), because I was in Ohio and not near any Chinese consulate, and they got an X visa for me in 5 business days. So it's still not too late.

Horrors10, as for apartment hunting, I'd check out http://www.thebeijinger.com/. There are a lot of listings, both for individual apartments or shares. I ultimately decided to live in the Zijing Dormitories at Tsinghua, at least for fall semester. The single rooms there are about 2400 RMB/month, which is less than most of what I saw on the Beijinger. But I'm sure there are good deals out there if you're diligent in your apartment search. I'm guessing that just after the Olympics will likely be a great renter's market, as so many landlords will have rented their units for short terms for the Olympics, so with so much more supply than demand you should be able to talk landlords down in price. Good luck with it.
