I got admitted to LL.M. in Taxation program at NU Law. Anybody here wanna go to NU Law in fall 2006?

My girlfriend is in their Llm right now, and graduating in a few weeks. Of 30 students in her class she is 1 of the 6 that have secured employment anywhere in the US. 3 are working for the government (she is in the chief cousel's office for the department of the treasury in NYC), and the other 3 are working for accounting firms (not actually practicing law). To make matters worse, she got her job on a fluke, and there technically should only be 5 employed students. Take it for what you will...but its the truth.

I have accepted the general LLM offer. You are right the placement scene is not that good. I have a close friend who is in the current llm class and still has no job offer. I did attend the day at northwestern law and spoke to current students about placements - the response was average. Again you are correct in saying they do get employed by accounting firms. I know the job scene is pretty sad - but lets hope for the best!!!!

Congraulations! Here is the one admitted to the Graduate Tax Program at Northwestern. People always say that Chicago is extremely cold in winter. I may need some friends to warm up each other. It's pretty nice to get to know you guys in anticipation. Wish the best of luck in our future learning.

If you wanna study "Federal Income Taxation" at NU, you might not see any LL.M Tax students in that class as they are not allowed to take JD classes....Anyway you will still see them in other tax classes if you choose, e.g., Corporate taxation or International taxation.

Need to explain something that LL.M Tax students cannot take any JD classes, except Kellog and Tax program classes. In contrast, JD students can take either Kellog or Tax program classes. The Federal Income taxation is also a JD class.

It's interesting to note that. I didn't know it. Incidentally, an acquaintance has told me that General LL.Ms. are not really allowed to choose all JD offerings and, therefore, there are a few restrictions. You are not actually free to gear a program to your liking. I don't know which courses are forbidden for LL.Ms., though. I hope "Evidence" is not one of them.

Wow, I didn't know that LL.M. Tax students are not allowed to take any JD class until you posted the information. What a pity for me. I wished to know more friends, especially American, to enrich my learning. Honestly, it is one of the reasons why I wish to study in the US---to experience American culture, which could be enhanced by making American friends. Nevertheless, this program is still my best choice for now and the area of Tax is my main interest. I hope at least the courses won't disappoint me. Wish the best of luck for all of us.

I was disappointed about this before. However, if you wanna enjoy your life with American students, you can do that by, for example, going to "bar review" every Thursday ( dance & drink). It is a traditional bar review of NU. The place will be changed every week around the downtown Chicago ,and the students really love this. However, there is some bad luck as Tax LL.M program will normally have its own events. The orientation is also separated from that of General LL.M. You will not be in the resposibility of the Internationl Office ( even though you are actually international student). You might not receive some school emails because you are not in the mailing list of JD and LLM. The graduation reception of Tax program is the same day of the "dinner dance" event where all other graduates will have fun, drink and dance all night, but we need to dress formally, sit and talk about taxes and careers. Tax LLM program really stays separately in this school.

Wish you enjoy your life here....try to find your own way to have fun :D

I forgot to explain another thing. My prior explaination might have made you misunderstood. That I said Tax students cannot take any JD classes means the credits will not be counted toward your tax degree. To graduate, you need to study 24 credits of tax courses ( 12 classes). If you want to study another JD Class, you may get higher than 24 ( upto 30). However, you can not reduce your tax credits to 22 or lower and count other JD class credits instead. If you do that, you will get General LL.M, not Tax LL.M.

Nonetheless, to this extent, currently there is only 1 student who takes extra credits because he needs to take the bar exam. For other students, 12 classes provide too much workload for them to take other extra credits.

Thank you so much for your information. It really helps me a lot. I have some more questions and would appreciate your views. Do you know when Northwestern initiated its Tax Program? And how much do you know about the placement of this program? and if I plan to sit for the bar exam, which additional class should I take? How about the class size? Thank you in anticipation.

Tax program was initiated about 4 or 5 years ago..(as far as I know) , so it is pretty good that we can reach rank no.4 so fast. ( I will check again whether this information is correct)

For the bar, you can actually study by yourself. Anyway, one of my tax friend took Legal Ethics.

The class size is about 30-40 ..

Last semester, I took "Tax Ethics, opinions, and penalties" and "Estate & Gift Taxation" . The first was not so tough as far as you use your human instinct whether what is wrong or right. This cause provides you the guide about how to be a tax lawyer in U.S. The class did not cover everything, but a guide. The Prof. who taught this class is so good in teaching and so funny. It's gonna be a relax class for you. The Estate&Gift provides you a lot of knowledge of how important tax planing for individuals is in the U.S.

This semester I am currently taking "Advance International Corporate Tax Transactions" . This class is taught by three excellent tax practioners in International tax areas. They are really doing international taxations so what they taught is quite practical and useful. This course is the advance combination of the "Advance Corporate Taxation" and "Internation Taxation". Hence, after you study these two classes, it will be very good if you will know the advance step of combining domestic and international things together. And if you want to practice in international areas, you should not avoid taking this class.

I also take " Entrepreneurship Laws". It is a Kellog Class for LLM student. I think it's so so. You might need other classes.

Anyway, the Prof. who taught international taxation of Fall 2005 was actually a visiting from George Washinton University. His name is "Sam Donaldson" . All students in my class agree that he was so so so good that some of us made a letter to have him as a full-time faculty, but nothing happens so far. Thus, I dont know who will teach you next semester. Also Prof. Yoder teaching Advance Int'l Taxation and Prof. Kwall from Loyola University , teaching Adv. Corporate tax are also the visitings . So who will teach next semester is still unknown in many required classes for me.

Personaly, first semester was quite tough to keep things together for me, 6 classes and big load of reading. However, nothing is harder than your attempt.

Hi again Mint! I am so glad you give answer to my questions! NU has such a great Tax program; however, from my standpoint it has a drawback that it is focused on domestic tax law. Though I want to stay in the US, Internationals are more marketable in international Tax rather than domestic tax law, and NU has few classes of International Law. Do you know if Board (or whoever) is thinking on readjust the program and introduce more international oriented classes like in Georgetown or NYU??
I would really appreciate your insights!

I dont think there is gonna be any change in the program next year except about the instructures. You are right! There are only 3 international tax classes at NU.

I just submitted a late application to the rolling admissions of NU for part-time Tax. What is everyone's thoughts on how diff, or lack thereof, it is to obtain a seat in that program? I have an MBA/JD from Loyola, with a few years experience ...
