Bank loan for international ll.m. students
Hi, everyone,Fri Apr 14, 2006 08:45 AM I am an international student and I will study in Georgetown the fall 2006. I plan to finance my study by bank loan. I really appreciate any suggestions, advice or personal expirience regarding this process. Can you recommend my sone banks. I should find funds before applying for visa. Thanks in advance! |

Fri Apr 14, 2006 11:02 AM Hi, everyone, I have the same problem. As an international student you cannot get a loan unless you have a QUALIFIED US co-signer for the loan. It means, if you dont know someone who makes enough money, whose credit history is good and who is employed for at least two years and who is willing to take the responsibility on him/her self ... you cannot get a lona. I applied on many institutions for the loans but was denied...since I could not secure qualified US co signer... And now...I nee djust a little bit of money and dont know how to get it!!! Very ugly and unpleasant situation. |

Ok, but if i have a co-signer who is an American citizen or a permenet resident, what is the percedure? Is it long? In which banks did you apply?

The promissory note issuance takes around 48 hours from the date of the application receipt at www.internationalstudentloans.com. You can expedite the procedure by having your US Co-signer fax the application form, otherwise you'd have to wait till the application gets through over standard mail. Hope this will do.

What truly matters is the credit-worthiness of the co-signer regardles of whether he/she is presently working or retired.

Roberto27, thanks for your advice.Mon Apr 17, 2006 07:12 AM I cannot take a bank loan from a local bank (I am from Bulgaria). In my country the bank loan for study doesn't exist as an option. |

Taday I will talk with them. I don't know if they give me a I -20 form when I will have a bank loan approved, bbecause it is not written as an option for financing.

Mon May 01, 2006 09:30 PM Hi, everyone, I am sorry but you chose the wrong school: At UVA you can get a loan as a foreigner without an american co signer (GATE Loan). I am not sure if you can get at any other university. The problem is that when you call them at GATE loan they won't tell you. Apart from that there are no other options. |

That's right. There are some Universities that have agreements with banks to allow their prospective students to take a loan in the US, without a US co-signer. Tue May 02, 2006 02:52 AM NYU has that kind of agreement with Citibank. The bad part is that the interest rate is Prime + 2%, in spite of Prime - 2%. |

HiThu Nov 22, 2007 03:12 PM I am on the same problem, I want to study in Canada and I am from Mexico but they have the same rule because the loan is through USA Banks and it really is hard to get a US Citizen co-signer. Maybe this will makes you laugh but I was wondering if there is some kind of "international co-signer services" or something like that????. My guarantee was initially a loan (made into a scholarship after I passed all my classes), and I had no trouble getting my I-20. I don't think they care how you get the money, as long as you have proof that you will have it. A lot of people finance their education by loans, so this makes sense.

The Office of Intrnational Students Services requires a "proof of funds" documents, preferably issued by a Bank confirming that funds shall be available for study of the applicant. The office is not concerned whether the "funds" are from personal savings, loans from private sources or proceeds of loan sanctioned by the Bank. Sat Nov 24, 2007 10:10 AM The US Government requires the Universities to mention in form I-20 about source of funding. |
