Georgetown vs. UCLA
I have been accepted from Georgetown University. However, I juz also got UCLA. I think that Georgetown will probably have more reputation than UCLA, but when compared the size of the class between UCLA and Georgetown...Georgetown has about 175 students per year while UCLA has about 50 students. So, I am thinking that UCLA might be more attractive than Georgetown coz each year only a little group of student from each country can be accepted from UCLA...Sat May 06, 2006 07:11 AM Which one should I go? please give me some comments..Thank you. |

Depends on whether you wish to take the Bar Exam. Georgetown LLM, according to their website, is not recommended for the bar. The UCLA LLM, however, can count towards the 4 year durational requirement for the California Bar.

Hi there, I am facing exactly the same problem like you. I already turned down offers from Cornell (because I rather be in the city than merely on the countryside) and GWU (although I received a scholarship, but GULC is the better alternative in DC), but now I am quiet indecisive where to go to. GULC would attract me because of its infamous int. law/WTO program, but UCLA has a good reputation in business/tax law. I also agree that the small class size at UCLA is an advantage and I suppose you would get a better feedback from Professors than at GULC. Washington and LA are both great cities and it is hard to compare them. Although GULC (14.) is a little higher in the national american law school rankings than UCLA (15.), I don't think this really matters much. In terms of the NY Bar exam, it is probably better to go to UCLA as GULC states that their LLM program is not really suitable for a preparation to it, although I don't know really why (can anybody explain that to me?). Both schools are represented at the NY LLM fair and even the costs for both schools are almost the same. At UCLA it is possible to be admitted to a teaching assistant or research assistant position whereas GULC offers unique externships with int. organisations etc.Sat May 06, 2006 01:58 PM In the end we should make up our minds what we really like to achieve afterwards and which field of law we are more interested in, right? I already devoted a lot of time to int. criminal law during my doctorate in home country and so I would be interested in something new like business law. In a nutshell, I need some days to think it all over again:-)) |

My main reason for the decision is that I like to try the bar exam after the LL.M. graduation:-)) Maybe I meet you in LA!? |

Hi Sand,Mon May 08, 2006 05:27 PM I understand that you are a Thai guy. Am I right? For your topic quoted above, if I were you, I will choose GULC. This is because, as you may know, GULC is likely to accept people having political connection. I think this advantage will help you in the future. For student bodies in LLM class, I think that 175 is ok. From my point of view, you can know a lot of ppl (connection) and get a bunch of worldwide perspectives. BTW, the important thing that you should concern is the courses you wanna take. I understand that GULC is strong in International law, but UCLA is strong in Business law. Georgetown vs. UCLA
For me, 50 or 175 does not make any difference in terms of class size where, normally, LLM students have to study in the same class with the JDs. In addition, not all of the LLMs will take the same class. You may see 2 LLMs and 30 JDs in some class, so dont think that you life will be weaken because of the number of the LLM.
