Hello again

Can any of you - prospective, current or past students - recommend or advise on the BCL/MJur Constitutional Theory course? If so, do students regularly take it in conjunction with the other theoretical courses (i.e. Juris and Political Theory, Philos Foundation of Common Law, etc). Is any combination advisable?

Any and all views welcome.

Does anyone know the correct starting date for BCL studies? Late September or 8 October? Good enough to go on 3 Oct (when college opens)?

I am at St Catz by the way...

@Dreamer: I suppose that even though formal teaching for the BCL/MJur won't start until week one of Michaelmas your college is probably going to ask you to come into residence at least a week before that date to attend their various induction events; my college (Merton), for example, expects me to arrive on September 26th/27th, but the situation might obviously be different at St. Catherine's. (I think it is also quite likely that there will be various introductory lectures etc. at faculty level before the start of 'full' term.)

No one else interested in renting something together? There are already 2 of us here who were not offered accommodation in a college. University accommodation has also a long waiting list and I was told it will be almost impossible to get a place. If anyone else is interested in private housing, please contact me or paedrarmy. The best places I have seen are usually for at least 3 tenants.

hi thanks for your answer jw !
There's something I'm really confused about - many of the scholarship applications require the submission of a study plan" for taught courses.
I would have thought that a study plan would be something that a research student would prepare considering that most of the courses for the BCL ( which I have been admitted to) have already been structured by faculty .
Also considering that we haven't chosen courses yet and aren't guarenteed of getting the ones we want , how does this work?
Is this "study plan" like a statement of purpose which includes broad areas of study ? How long should it be ? What should it include? ANY help on this would be greatly appreciated . Thanks so much .

By the way, I sometimes wonder how all of us would recognise each other once we reach Oxford. We would probably be inquiring who is jw? who is student 02? We all know each other virtually and through codenames:))

Incidentally, the updated course list for 2006-07 has done with two credit modules. The International Economic Law Module for example is for three credits (last year it was 2). The course description interestingly begins by stating that this two credit module...
Guess the content of the course description has not been updated yet.

I'll be easy spot, the guy with the hat begging for change with a Monty Python accent saying: "Alms for an ex-undergraduate?"

kidding. ;)

Excellent... on a slightly related note, does anybody know how much preparatory reading is advisable for the Jurisprudence course? I'm about to head overseas for a holiday before I arrive, and want to know if I should pack some (not so light) reading to accompany me!

Hi all,

do you know if we will have essay assignments and hence have to stay in Oxford during the breaks? Will colleges normally offer accommodation for the whole 9-month period? Thanks for your advice.

Does anyone know anything about the insolvency course at oxford? Who takes it? As it wasn't offered last year, I am finding it difficult to find any information about it. The handbook on the webpage still seems to be the one from 2005/2006. Thanks!

Alistair:

I did the BCL in 2004/5 and can advise that the Con Theory course in my year was, quite frankly, dreadfully dreadfully taught. There was no structure to speak of, there appeared to be no purpose to the seminars (which quite often were led by invited DPhil students, and would then be hijacked by other DPhil or MPhil students with similar research interests), and tutes were quite often a joke. If the composition of the teaching team has changed, then the story may be different this year. But if it hasn't, it'll be a great pity because the topics in the syllabus (or what passed for a syllabus in my year) are so interesting in their own right. I came from a public law background, and taught the subject for two years at my old university - but the Oxford Con Theory course effectively killed whatever inherent interest I already had in the subject-matter to begin with. In fact, it was my lowest scoring exam in the BCL Finals!

Best to see if you can get an opinion from someone who took the course in 2005/6. Better yet, get to Oxford and see if you can attend a couple of initial seminars. I don't think you have to pin down your courses right off the bat.
