regarding job opportunities - I don't know if you have seen this on BU's website, but the law school does have a career development office. They will not place students in jobs, but they will advise us and direct us to resources to help our searches. In addition, there are often job-fairs for lawyers and law students throughout Boston and New York City (NYC is about a 4 hour train ride away), for which I'm sure we will be given notice. Finally, there will most likely be some on-campus interviews. We should have full access to the career development website once the school year gets going, and at that time I assume they will explain what other resources are available to us. Until then you can still get some basic information on the website. Thu Jun 15, 2006 04:24 AM if everyone already knows all of this, then please disregard this message. |

With regards to the password - Mon Jun 19, 2006 06:48 PM Do you mean for the BU job postings? We most likely won't have access to that until we actually start at BU. But if you want to get an early start looking at jobs, you can still go to the career development website and click on the link for "Online Resources" - that will bring you to a long list of other sites that you can use to look for a variety of jobs. If you are talking about the login and password to access the materials that BU emailed us about (course registration, etc.), the login ID and pasword was provided near the beginning of the email that they sent us. hope that helps [Edited 19 Jun 2006 by neal] |

Hey Mariya,Mon Jun 19, 2006 07:36 PM I have had quite loans from US banks all through law school and will be getting them next year. I can't speak to any issues specific to being a foreign applicant, I assume you can't borrow U.S. government education loans so I'll just say something about private loans. The financial aid section of the law schoo's website explains the different types pretty well. I would recommend the access group's law access loan. I would say 95% of my class uses them for their private loans and they offer decent rates and have a simple application process. Also, a few of my friends and myself applied online with Bank of America for an Education Maximizer loan, which is TERI loan. The thing about the education maximizer is bank of america does not check with the school so you can exceed the student budget if you wish. Comes in handy for refinancing credit card debt, though that technically is illegal. best, grant |

Also, I wanted to add a friendly note about BU's career development. I don't want to be overly negative, but I wouldn't count on them for much. Over my three years here they have consistently gotten better each year, but they are still subpar at best. (please don't go telling them i said that). I can guarantee their focus will be on getting 2nd year JD students jobs. As for the online job postings, I will log on and if i see anything of interest I'll post it here on this board. What i consider "of interest" would be a corporate/banking/financial law job in Boston or New York, so if someone would like me to look for something else let me know.Mon Jun 19, 2006 07:43 PM Best, grant |

Hey Grant,Mon Jun 19, 2006 07:48 PM Thank for that offer - I think that will be very usefull for all of us. I have a F-1 visa which give me a right to work only in BU so it is very important to me to find a good job. Any ideas? I have heart that the wages are between $8-$15, is it true? Best regards, Mariya |

Mariya,Mon Jun 19, 2006 07:59 PM I don't know much about MEFA other than I've heard people say they have them. I would just call MEFA directly to ask about the citizenship requirement. For jobs around campus, most students who get a job are research assistants for professors. I did that for a year, they pay $10 an hour, set your own hours, you basically just do research in the library. The law library also needs people to work the front desk, i think they make about $10/hour too. The University's General Counsel takes on one or two people as well, they pay more, maybe $12-$15. And of course there is always being a server for the University's catering service. |

I would say professors are always looking for someone, usually at the beginning of each semester and the summer. Some professors will have as many as 3 to 4 RAs. There is no application process per se, you pretty much just ask a professor you have had a class with or so forth. Since you have yet to meet any professors, I would talk to Prof. Hurley. I bet he will hook you up if he can.

To Qing, I believe you must be asking about the BU ID and password to access to BU off-campus housing website. Regarding to the BU account, I have already written to their office to inquire into the registration stuffs, and they replied to me that the registration was supposed to begin within these two weeks, so we'll see.Tue Jun 20, 2006 11:06 AM To Tony, welcome to join us!!! To dear all, have you submitted the course selection form? Grant, could you please provide more information on the faculties and the courses they teach, as you already spent quite a long time at BUSL. Personally, I think the introduction of curriculum appears somewhat generic. Thank you very much!! Best regards, Ming |

Hi, I’m also going to BUSL American Law Program 2006/7 and will also attend Summer/CELOP. I will arrive in Boston on July 3. I am so I'm sorry I notice your chat-room just now. I really like your friendly art of support and especially yours Grantman. Unfortunately I won’t be in BU Banking and Financial Law Class but I think your advice is really valuable. It is possible to meet you in person Grantman or anybody else - former LLMs or JD students? If yes, it’s workable already in Summer, July? I do have a lot of questions about BU, NYU Bar exam etc. Are you already in Boston? Please write me to: atalbusa@yahoo.de. Is anybody else from Switzerland coming to BUSL American Law Class who will participate in CELOP?Thu Jun 29, 2006 05:53 PM Looking forward to meeting you, guys! Jodie |

Hey,Thu Jun 29, 2006 06:27 PM I tried to post this days ago but apparently it didn't work so sorry about the delay. Ming: None of the professors for the banking program teach in the JD program so I don't know anything more about them then you do. The only thing I have heard is that Stuart Fross is really good. Mariya: I have no idea about any book to recommend you. The JD program doesn't teach the common law system from a book or anything like that, you just pick it up over the course of your first year and I do not recommend reading first year case books. I'm sure something exists out there, I just don't know what it is but I bet someone in the office of foreign programs does. Sorry I can't be more helpful than that. Grant |
