Lancaster Uni
I was admitted into lancasters international law program, but I have no idea how the school ranks, is it any good? What about when compared to aberdeen and kent brussels? any information regarding their reputation would be much appreciated, thanks.

Lancaster is #35 in the Times ranking..., it isn´t a top Law school, but as I stated in another topic some weeks ago: people should not only look at the ranking position. A very good friend of me studied there, not at the Law school though but I think literature, and she loved it there! Lancaster does NOT belong to the bad schools for sure. Good luck!

I have also got an offer from the univ but i'm not considering it now, just waiting for the Leeds and manchester offers/ essex?

Actually, I'm considering an offer for an llm from Lancaster as well, still waiting for some others allthough I am leaning towards Lancaster for its llm matches my interests best.Wed Jun 07, 2006 02:18 PM Lancaster is by the way ranked at 21, thereby 'beating' Manchester (26) and Leeds(34) in the Times Good University Guide. Oh by the way, it would be really helpfull to know more about the city, the university, student life etc. As I don't know anything about that.Wed Jun 07, 2006 02:55 PM Also, does anyone know how long it usually takes before you get a reply from the uni's? I got a reply from Lancaster within a week, weird isn't it? Wondering if they even read my references e.g. or even if they have any entry requirements at all..although it's great to be admitted of course. Any insights? No need to do that (I mean feeling like an idiot, lol). Actually you did the right thing when you chose a university that you feel positive about... Rankings aren´t that important, you found the right uni when you feel that it is the right uni. As for the time it takes a university to respond: one week to get an offer is WAY fast! They might send out a short note informing you that they have received your application within a few days, but getting an offer normally takes longer, mostly at least a month... They obviously liked your application! ;-) Congrats! :-) |

Hello! Thu Jun 08, 2006 10:34 AM I did a LLM in International Law and International Relations at Lancaster 2 years ago and enjoyed very much. It's a fantastic uni to go to. As it is a small school you get a lot of personal attention, you are treated almost as a research student. The facilities are good and the area is great. I would thoroughly recommend it. I found that studying both law and international relations opened a lot more doors when I looked for work afterwards. The LLMs have a very good mix of students from all over the world. As it has one of the best Iinternational relations/ peace study centre you have a lot of diplomats/ international workers who attend. The trouble with the University of London LLM, as I understand it from friends who have studied there, is that you get lost in the crowd. They accept nearly all students (all the ones I know anyway) and so it gets very busy. After that it is a matter of choice on whether you would prefer studying in a small town or a big city. Lancaster is not an expensive place to be (UK wise) but it only has one cinema. On the other hand you're in the countryside in one of the most beautiful area of Britain. As an asside I do agree that one should not to look too closely at league tables, it mainly caters for the parents of middle class brit undergrads and it doesn't always reflect the quality of the school (remember for example that it takes into account the A-Level results that the students got. That has nothing to do with the teaching). And yes I do get annoyed when people, who have never even set foot in the place (Lancaster or any other university that is criticised), go "You shouldn't go there it's no good".
