Hi
I have also just found out that I have been accepted, but only after I phoned the University.
Have you been given any info re starting dates, accomodation suggestions, etc?
It's all a bit vague, and I'm still tossing up whether to accept or not!
Thanks

Hi Deborah,

Classes begin on Oct. 23-24. The accomodation suggestions they gave me are in this link (bureau des logements): http://www.unige.ch/dase/bulog/
They have several buildings with different kinds of dorms and most of them are very close by to the UCIHL. The deadline for applying to those dorms is July 15. Otherwise there are also some private lodging options though i guess they're more expensive. I know another girl who is also attending the UCIHL, perhaps we could discuss the options later on if you decide to attend. Also, I suggest you call the UCIHL agains and ask them about the enrollment procedure to the University of Geneva (UNIGE) because you have to be "matriculated" there, in order to be able to begin the program at the UCIHL and the deadlin for doing that is June 1, but I guess if you just found out you've been accepted to the UCIHL they will have no problem in your sending the required format and papers to the UNIGE later on. You can find that info at: http://www.unige.ch/dase/?buimi/admission.html

Don't hesistate to keep in touch with me if you have any further doubts.

Hi Frida

Thanks so much for your advice.

Yes, let's definitely keep in touch about the accomodation issue.

I've just received the documents, including the Geneva enrolment forms, so I guess I'll have to get onto that pretty quickly. My problem is that I haven't applied for any scholarships and it looks as though I may be out of time. Are you doing this through scholarships? I spoke with the University and the lady I spoke to there suggested that many people work to pay their way, so I may look into that as well.

Hope this all works out, I'm pretty excited about this programme!

Also, could you please share with us your background? e.g. working experience.

Thanks a lot!

Hello all,
I just registered myself to this site, and was wondering if I could join your conversation? I'm about to send my application to UCIHL.
I'm currently doing an MA in international law and human rights, but my BA was in journalism. Do you guys know if an LLM requires a lawyer degree (ie law school or a BA in law)? If you could share your impressions of the course so far, too, that'd be great!
Thanks!
All best,

Hi All

I am interested in applying for this course to begin in 2008.

However I am from Australia and am concerned about how to finance my time in Geneva - does anyone know of the number of scholarships awarded and whether it would be possible to get an english speaking job in Geneva whilst studing?

Also - is there anyone who has completed this course or knows of anyone who has completed the course and if so what sort of positions do they hold now?

Cheers,

Hi USAEsq. I do not know a word on French!!! As far as I know, when you applying at UCIHL,you can chose between French and English. But When you want to apply for some programmes at University of Geneva,I do not know a procedure. If they did not put terms on the internet site, contact them personal. I know that in Geneva exists Graduate Institut of International Stuidies-they demand a passive knowledge of French, and besides this a lot of other things. I think it is highly competetive there. But if it easy to be accepted there I would not go,because it lasts two years. It is two much for me. Especially I will finish faculty who lasts 4 years, then a master 1=it is 5 years of education. It is enough. I cannont forever ask money of my parens,I have to let them live a little :-)))
a little advise: You apply anywhere you think might be interested, and after can choose. If you apply only for one you might be dispponited when you rely for one. I will apply for more then one.
Good luck. Ciao

I went over a few months ago and i was told by a student currently studying that classes are split between the HEI and the University of Geneva. You have to enroll with either school when you get there, but i got the understanding that it didnt really matter which. I have accomodation at the RUI so as probably going to register at the HEI because it's closer, although i have to admit i dont really undertsand the process!!!!

I'm interested in getting the Master in Advanced Studies in International Humanitarian Law that the University Centre for International Humanitarian Law offers. I was wondering if you could help me by providing the following information:
Admission requirements
1. What are the admission requirements regarding education or in general?
2. About the language, what are the requirements I have to meet to enter the programme? Is TOEFL or IELTS needed? What's the score that I should get in both?
3. There's a deadline for applying for the programme and I won't get my diploma before the deadline, but I will receive my degree before the programme starts. I want to know if I can apply because I really want to begin my Master in the 2008. Is there a possibility, in that case, to receive a conditional offer?

hi grisselle27, do you know of anyone else who is applying for the next year for this program? Also do you know if in the essay outlining why you are interested in a program, you need to specify anything about your 'future' thesis or a study plan of any sort? I wasn't planning to, because I don't have concrete thoughts on that, but I am not sure if it's something that is usually put in.

Hi Tanya, I am applying to UCIHL and I sent my application yesterday. I did not specify my future thesis in my statement but rather gave a broad overview of my future goals and how the degree will help me achieve that. I didn't think I could decide on a thesis right now but if you are already sure about your thesis, it doesn't hurt to put it in. In any case, it shows how very focussed you are. I am also applying to other schools but UCIHL remains a priority to me so I decided to send the application early and await the outcome as I apply to the others.

Hi Petra!
Thanks for your thoughts. I haven't sent my documents in. I noticed that the new website for the academy is still a bit under construction. As of yesterday, the forms were still in French, although they are identical to the older ones for the universtiy centre. I am also waiting for my reference letters from Canada. You see, I am Canadian, but right now I am staying in Austria. At first, I was not sure if I need to provide the reference letters themselves or only names of those who are writing the reference, but then I saw that they want an assessment of my English by a professor/employer as although I lived in Canada since I was a child, I don't have formal English training or tests, like TOEFL, so I decided to wait for full references and then send it all. And as for the thesis, no I am not that focused ;) It's just that I was a bit paranoid as to what I have to include as the application form is pretty basic. Do you know of anybody who finished the program? I contacted one girl (I got her email from one of the blogs here). SHe said that the program was good, but they had a problem with students whose English was not quite as fluent as was needed, because they were falling behind. I guess that's why the academy is so keen on English this year. She also said that as the program is relatively new, they try to implement something new every year and that it's partially trial and error, but she said that overall it was great, the class was about 35 students and they were from like 30 countries. So, I am still very much interested. Where else are you applying?

Hi Tanya,
I used the old forms as the website was under reconstruction and I wanted to get this out of the way before applying to other schools. I am also applying for a scholarship from the Swiss Government in my Country and I needed to apply to UCIHL first and get an acknowledgement to present with my scholarship application. I am quite fluent in English and have a fair knowledge of French. I hope to study in Geneva because apart from the great program and good job prospects, I will also get to advance my French.
I am also applying to IHE, I know it partnered up with University of Geneva to form UCIHL but its programme is better known worldwide, though it takes two years. They also have a number of interesting scholarships, frankly, without a scholarship,I would not be able to attend any of these schools. I will also apply to UNICRI and LEIDEN, in that order. All the best as you prepare your application. One thing about UCIHL is that they dont require too many things ,so that at the end you look at your application and wonder, is this all they need? But I guess they pretty much know what they are looking for.

Hey there,
no, no word from the academy yet. I sent my application in November, in case they were still using the old deadline, but from their reply it looks like they use January 31 as the deadline. So, no news yet. But if you hear something, let us know. By the way, have you managed to contact any students that are studying there now or who have already graduated?
Talk to you later,
Tanya

I'll let you know anything. At the moment the only thing that I an tell you for sure is that we must wait until end of march for an answer of the institute.

kenco05, how disappointing about the organization issue! Please explain in detai, I am really intent on studying either there or at HEI. Do you take some classes at HEI, what is the relationship between the two institutions? Does the Academy give scholarships when one applies? How many people are admitted each year? What are the career prospects? Sorry for my many questions but I just really want to get a clear picture of this place.

hi petra,
well the disorganisation is mostly admistratively - things always changed last minute or it appears one does not communicate with the others some times which can get frustrating. there are around 30 people on the english course and 30 on the french course.apparently only 1 in 4 that applied got a place last year. the relationship with the HEI is that we do have some of our classes in the building from the academy and we are allowed to take one of the HEI classes from a choice they give us. With regards to career prospects the academy does have contacts but it is not as helpful as they are made out to be but we do get regular offers to apply for internships at the various organisations in Geneva. The scholarships have to be applied for on a seperate application when you apply otherwise you will not be considered! anything else don't hesitate to ask.

Thanks for the info. I think it's safe to say that you are our only insider source. In terms of internships and job prospects, how important is French. I have absolutely no French and am really concerned. I'll try to take French courses in the summer, but I obviously won't be fluent. Is French something of a prerequisite for most internships that you came across? And overall, are you happy with your decision to go to the the Academy. I know it's a personal question, but was it worth it for you, would you recommend it? For me it's a big investment, I pretty much cannot afford it at all, and it looks amazing on paper, but how is it in reality?
Thanks for helping us out with your tips.

hey Tanya,
currently sat in a class with Guy Goodwin-Gill from Oxford, a fine example of the expert professors we have. I have not much french and it is true that it is seen as always nearly necessary for internships. For the course french is not necessary but for future careers most do require french. I enjoy the teaching and education i have recieved I am just a little disappointed with the organisation. anything else don't hesitate to ask,

Hi everyone!! kenco05 you are so kind, thak you so much!!! I have some questions ( a lot :P)
1. They said that we'll have an answer in 6 weeks, it should be next week, do they inform by email or regular mail?
2. About the scholarship, do they tell you at the same time that they notify the admission (in case of positive answer) or few weeks later?
3. My french is poor, can students be in french language courses to improve their french, I mean, is there a language center?
4. In your case, do you see a possibility to stay in Geneva after the Master Programme?
I know that is a lot of questions but right now you are the only person who coukd give us a better view. I'm really interested in this programme since is my favorite branch of International Law. Thank you for your assistance and anticipated cooperation.
Kind regards,
Grisselle.
p.s: girls, just one week more...I hope so...CROSS YOUR FINGERS :)

hi griselle, I looked at the French courses. They have specific training courses for student in HEI, but unfortunately HEI said that Academy's students are not eligible. But there is another centre in the university that offers intensive french (5-7 hours per day in the summer). Here is the link: http://www.fle.unige.ch
their email is elcfete@unige.ch
however, the courses are only in the summer. during the year, a normal student at the university of geneva (and I hope we qualify, as institutions are affiliated), can take a normal french course, but it's only 2 hours per week.
as for the notification of the answer, I am also completely impatient :) The email that confirmed that they got the application itself, said that we will be notified by email. So, I hope we'll know by March 14!
Hope it helps,
Keep in touch,

Hi, Petra, no we all received it - at least Griselle and I. At first I thought it was their personal reply to me, as I sent them an email asking if there are any delays and if we get an answer by email (as statedin the acknowledgement email) or by regular mail. But it was a generic email they sent out. THe weird thing is that most universities in Europe are closed for the second half of March for Easter, so I don't understand who exactly will be sendingout everything if the university is closed. Maybe they send out answers by regular mail byt eh end of this week and simply approximate that it will take two weeks to reach us. The wait is pure torture, but as kenco said, organization is not their strongest point.
Let us know if you receive anything else.

Yes I was given a scholarship of $18,000 but that only covers half the tution costs and frankly I do not know how or where to raise the rest. Fletcher Schhool of Law and Diplomacy has a very good reputation but ultimately as you say , it boils down to affordablity.
I have seen someone else say they have ben admitted to the academy, so .... what does this mean, why send us mail to wait and admission offers are actually out for some people?

I just received an offer from the academy, but without any details.

I'm from Norway, and I applied in November. I am a bit torn between my options as it is very difficult to find much reliable information about the Academy. The program seems great though.

Here's the e-mail i received, in case anyone is curios:

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am pleased to inform you that the Academy’s Admission Committee has admitted you to the 2008/2009 MAS in International Humanitarian Law.

In the meantime, you must imperatively proceed before April 30, 2008 to your registration at the University of Geneva (mandatory for students of the Academy). This procedure is totally independent from your application to the Academy. To carry out this procedure please visit: http://www.unige.ch/dase/immatriculation.html

You will shortly receive the letter of acceptance and the form for the payment of the first instalment of the tuition fees.

Best regards,

Hi there!
Congratulations to you as well.
to be honest I am not up to speed on the whole process. I am a Canadian citizen, but live in Austria. Now, however, I am in Canada for two weeks to see my parents. So, my internet access here is limited and my documents are in Austria. So, I will wait till I get back on April 1 and then check my paper mail and try to figure everything out. I think the best bet right now if to call the Academy. They are not very keen on answering emails, but I called them once and got my inquiry answered. I know it's a bit ridiculous to pay the non-refundable deposit before we are accepted at University of Geneva and before student visas are obtained. I think there should be some room for paying a bit later. I mean, after all, it was they who were late with admission answers, so it's only fair that they give us two weeks extra time too. But I will check everything in detail once I am back in Austria. If you hear anything or if you wish to ask anything, please do not hesitate to email me at tanya_tokar82@hotmail.com
COngrats again. I take it that you are accepting? I still haven't heard anything about teh reputation of the program, although individual professors are outstanding.

Hi Petra1
Congratulations!
Right now I am in a daze, I have to make a decision quickly, but I am not sure of what is the right step for me. For me it's not so much other offers as my personal situation. I have no French, so I will have to invest in French courses over the summer and throughout the academic year to be able to qualify for future internships. Plus I will have to live away from my husband and we got married only recently. I want to be able to have a job after the program and I am scared that I will squander the last savings I have, live away from Alex for almost two years (if you factor in the potential internship) and then with the minimal French I will obtain in this short time I might not even get an internship or a job. And I found out nothing about the reputation of the Academy, I don't know any of the graduates or where the job chances are. So, it's all very uncertain right now. On the other hand, I am really looking forward to studying with amazing students and amazing professors. But I just don't have a feel for this program - it's all partial information and all of it on paper, nothing from experience of those who went through it. I will deal with it once I get back to Austria in 10 days. Ultimately it all hinges on the scholarship. Without it it's simply not affordable.
Let me now what you decide and congratulatios again.

Hi Petra!
I was wondering if the academy gave you a scholarship and if you are going there. I did not get any financial assistance and therefore unless a miracle happens between now and June 15, I will not be able to go. But if you do go and study there, I would appreciate if we couldstay in touch, as I will try to save as much as I can and reapply next year and I would like to know from somebody there (i.e. you ;) how it really is.
Thanks.
