Just thought it would be a good idea to put together a list of those definitely going to UCL. After all we are only just over a month way from the start of term. It would also be great to meet up with some of you guys during registration etc...

Hi guys,

I am Ph from Quebec City (Can).

I am a bit worried that I received nothing from UCL Laws so far since my offer was accepted, except for the Accomodation office stuff. My girlfriend is going to LSE. It seems like LSE gave her better guidance with respect to tuition fee, accomodation, bank accounts, etc...

it is kinda wierd: I never received any reply to e-mails I sent to UCL Laws,,, To be honest, the documentation I received from LSE is more detailed and recent.

Anyway, I will likely take international finance, law and economics of regulated industries, International Construction - Contracts and Arbitration and international law of natural ressources

Hi ph. Got a reply from UCL Laws - apparently more detailed info will come at the beginning of September. If you need to email anyone within Laws, Lorely Teulon always responds quickly - her email is on the site under the section "who to contact."

Hey I am flying from Shanghai to London on 13th September. Haven't heard from the Student Residence Office yet. And still contemplate about what courses to choose. I'd appreciate the law faculty to give more detailed introduction on choosing courses. By the way anyone has any idea what the scheduel would be since we can only take four courses in a year. That's the work load for one semester in some US law schools. No intention to compare the two different systems. Just would like to get aquainted about the UK system

Sorry for the confusion ph. Still haven't received a package from Laws but was told by Ms Teulon that we would receive something in the next 2-3 weeks. So far I just have an email acknowledging receipt of my acceptance.

Jazzman, what's in the reply package you received? I tried to contact Ms. Teulon and she never replied...

Thanks, all I got is a confirmations that I accepted their offer for admission... but I received it by regular mail. No-emails, unlike LSE...

Hello, I'm from Belgium and I will be going to UCL in September 2006. I'm still waiting for the unconditional offer though. I sent the documents to prove that I've fulfilled the condition stated in the conditional offer three weeks ago. But I still haven't received anything from UCL.

Has everyone else received their unconditional offer yet?

Hi Koen, I may be able to help you there. I have received an email from UCL Laws which states that unconditional offers are not normally sent out by mail. You may request an unconditional offer from the Graduate Admissions Department if you require an unconditional offer letter for the purposes of applying for a loan or for proof for a scholarship application. I will require such a letter to apply for a loan, if you are in the same position email: admissions@ucl.ac.uk

The Laws email said that we would receive documentation about how to register in about 2-3 weeks. Hope this helps...See you all in Sep' :-)

Koen, j'ai obtenu mon offre inconditionelle.

J'ai expédié ma demande d'admission à UCL en novembre. Il est préférable de présenter tous les documents demandés dans un seul envoi. J'ai joint mon certificat TOEIC à la demande, ce qui explique peut-être que j'ai pu obtenir rapidement une offre inconditionelle, en mars. Aussi, je suis déjà avocat alors j'ai pu inclure mon diplôme ainsi que mon certificat d'exercice de la profession d'avocat.

Thank you for the replies Jazzman and ph.

Jazzman: I have received that e-mail that states that unconditional offers are not sent out by mail too. But on the phone people from the Admissions Office and the Law Faculty said there will be a 'status update' when they receive the documents proving that you've fulfilled the condition and are satisfied with those documents. And I suppose you get a notification of that status update. That's what I'm waiting for. Just to be sure that everything is OK. And because it's taking them a while, I'm getting a little worried.

Ph: It was impossible for me to send all the documents when I applied for the LL.M.-programme in November 2005. I still had to graduate at that time (which I did in July 2006). That's why I received a conditional offer. I've sent a diploma certificate and a transcript of my grades of this year as soon as I could to UCL.
By the way: I live in the Dutch speaking part of Belgium. I do understand French though, but it's easier for me to answer in English.

I also have another question: when will you be arriving in London? The accomodation offer from UCL Residences Office states that one can arrive on the 22nd or 23rd September, but are there introductions or reasons why one should be in London earlier?

Koen - Sorry! I assumed you are from Wallonie... Both parts of your country are beautiful by the way (I visited Belgium for two weeks last summer - Vive la GO-PASS!!): my favorite cities are Gent, Brussels and Namur. Where are you from?

To answer your question - my flight is scheduled for Sept. 12: I want to have a couple of weeks to get settled.

Jazzman - I understand you are from the UK. Can you think of an item we should not forget to bring in London (apart from a raincoat)? Do you know the proportion of UK nationals in the LLM program at UCL and in the Federal LLM?

Well I won't deny that a raincoat/umbrella can be of some use! :-)) I think if you want to get settled in to London - don't forget your A-Z map (streetmap). Also bring some form of international student card (Do you guys have ISIC cards?) for student discount/shopping! Mind you if you intend doing any sightseeing before you start - you will be glad to hear that a lot of the big museums etc... are free. But really just bring the obvious essentials and things you think you might miss from home. A friend of mine is Australian... now she brings Vegemite with her... cant see the attraction myself!!! :-))

I'm not sure about the proportion of students. I think perhaps no more than a third from the UK and the remainder from overseas. I think there will be a good mix of different nationalities from what one of my friends has told me (he went to UCL last year). It's going to be great to meet all of you finally!

Jazzman - I understand you are from the UK. Can you think of an item we should not forget to bring in London (apart from a raincoat)? Do you know the proportion of UK nationals in the LLM program at UCL and in the Federal LLM?

I'm from Leuven (about 30km from Brussels). Have you been there too? Otherwise you should visit it the next time you travel to Belgium. Antwerp and Brugge are also worth definitely worth a visit :-).

I will be arriving in London on September 18th. Hopefully the Residence Office allows arrivals on that date, because if they don't I'll have to find a place to stay for 4 days. (The accomodation offer stated that I could arrive on September 22nd or 23rd.)

Koen - I did not have enough GO-Pass transfers (!!!) to visit Leuven but I went to all the main cities of each province, including Antwerp and Brugge. I also went to Luxembourg and Maastricht. I am sorry I can't help you with your early arrival: I will myself sleep on someone else's couch in September. It won't be my appartment until october.

Jazz-Thanks for the advice about the ISIC card!! However, I am not sure it will be possible to get it before I move to London as I was not a student during the current year.

i'll be reading shipping law and international trade law. has anyone been put in James Lighthill house? Also. when are you all arriving in UCL? i don't know when the orientation dates are for international and/or LLM students, but my accomodation only starts from the 23rd sept so that seems to be my arrival date..

HI ALL! Don’t forget everyone, airport security are already confiscating liquids and gels that are in hand-carry baggage.

FOR KOEN: Here's what I have about UCL’s conditional offers from the booklet they sent me: “Once we have received acceptable documentation confirming that all offer conditions have been met, UCL will amend your record and if you are an overseas student issue a revised unconditional offer.” I myself received a revised offer. I think the reason for this policy is that international students by default need a formal unconditional offer for visa purposes.

I guess the “status update” UCL has been telling you about is just an internal record. Per my experience, UCL’s telephone operators have access to an up-to-date computer databank. So you can call them if you want a soft confirmation of your condition fulfillment.

On reasons for early arrival, there will be an orientation on Sept. 21 (Thursday).


FOR MALASIA BOLEH: I've been assigned to James Lighthill House too :) I’m planning to arrive on the 18th so I’d have time to settle in before the orientation on the 21st. If you want to arrive earlier than the 23rd, you should fill out the form they sent with your accommodations offer and indicate there an earlier arrival date. :) Hope to see you there!

Hi ph, I think you should be fine to get one. Just present your offer letter and it should be fine. I got one last year by doing the same.

Jazz-Thanks for the advice about the ISIC card!! However, I am not sure it will be possible to get it before I move to London as I was not a student during the current year.
