International Shipping Law Internship City Law School
City Law School has just launched an internship in Shipping Law with noted international shipping firm Thomas Cooper Stibbard. This internship will be available to students in 2006/2007 who take our Admiralty and Marine Insurance courses in the first term. The Internship will take place during May to July 2007.Tue Aug 22, 2006 02:33 PM Full details and press release are set out below. This is the second LLM internship organised by the City Law School for its LLM students. For details of our competition law internship see www.city.ac.uk/law/llmprogramme/omminternship.html… A number of additional internships for 2006/2007 in Brussels and London are currently under negotiation with major corporate firms. The Shipping Internship will last for three months inclusively from May to July 2007. 2. Only Students who take City Law School LLM shipping law courses in term 1 are eligible for the internship. 3. The Internship will be won by competition. 4. The competition will be in two parts. Part one will consist of assessment of essays submitted as the assessed essays on the Maritime Insurance Law and Admiralty Law courses. Students presenting the top two marks for each essay will be invited to attend an interview for the internship. Part two will consist of an interview. The Interviewees will also be asked to present references and a Curriculum Vitae. 5. TCS will select the winner of the internship from the four interviewees. 6. CLS will grant the winner an automatic two month extension to his/her dissertation submission deadline. 7. The internship shall be subject to Thomas Cooper & Stibbard's terms for the Internship. Copies of the terms are available on request 8. TCS reserves the right not to award the internship. 9. The winning student must confirm that s/he is able under visa regulations to take up the internship. II. Press Release City Law School and TCS Launch the International Shipping Law Internship Thomas Cooper and Stibbard Launches its International Shipping Law Internship at the City Law School. Major International Commercial Law firm Thomas Cooper and Stibbard launches its International Shipping Law Internship at the City Law School. Professor Peter Kunzlik, Director of the City Law School and Pro-Vice-Chancellor of City University said, “City Law School welcomes the opportunity to work with one of the most highly regarded of London’s commercial law firms”. Dr Alan Riley, Director of the LLM Programme said, “the internship will give the winning student the opportunity to blend the knowledge that he or she develops on the shipping law courses of our International Commercial Law LLM Programme with high level practical experience gained from working in Thomas Cooper and Stibbard’s world renowned shipping law practice”. Charles Williams partner at Thomas Cooper and Stibbard, said “ we are delighted to work with the City Law School and to provide the opportunity for a student to develop his/her professional skills to a higher level.” Under the terms of the internship students taking the Marine Insurance, Admiralty and Carriage of Goods by Sea courses on the International Commercial Law LLM Programme will be invited to compete for the internship. The competition will be by essay and by interview. The Internship will take place from May to July inclusive. City Law School have agreed an automatic dissertation extension of two months for the winner of the internship. Thomas Cooper and Stibbard were established in the City of London in 1825 and now have offices across the world including Athens, Singapore, Vancouver and Madrid. They are particularly well-known for their shipping, trade, banking, aviation and European law practice. |

Hi there. I think having an internship is such an excellent idea and will certainly give the law school an edge in terms of a vocational approach.Thu Aug 24, 2006 03:36 AM On another point if I may - is it true that City were thinking of offering an LLM in Media Law? I am going to UCL in September chiefly because of the expertise they have in Media Law (such as Prof. Barendt). It would be great to give students more choice in this area as I believe courses with a media specialism are few and far between (Bournemouth and one or two others) |

In fact we have just obtained a further internship with the Brussels office of Howreys-details of which are on another of todays postings. On media law. Many thanks for your reply. I think it is very encouraging that more universities are realising that media law is a great specialisation. I know a lot of people think that there has been a decline in recent years in media related litigation - but we just need to look at Freedom of Information as a new area to see how important it is.
