I still have to decide if I do a fulltime LLM at SOAS or a parttime MSc in European Politics and Government at LSE. As the fees at LSE are pretty high, I would have to do a parttime course over 2 years in order to be able to work. How would you decide?

I think it largely depends if you want to pursue a career in i.e., government or in a law firm. If its the latter, I think the LLM will be more useful.

Cheers

Hi:)

I completely agree, it depends on what your aspirations are, but congrats for getting both offers!!!:)

I am thinking to apply for MSc European Political Economy ( LSE)

By the way, how difficult was it to get onto the LSE masters course? I am a Ukrainian student who has graduated from a UK University with a high 2:1( from a good, but not a top university). Speak 5 languages, do some pro bono work...... Do you think I have a chance?

Would really appreciate your reply:))

Cheers and good luck!

yes, I really think you should try it. as I got my law degree in germany so I have no idea how they valuated my results there. but I do think they really cared about the references and the personal statement.

I am just wondering about the possiblity to work in london as a recently graduated german lawyer, because I will have to find a job as the lse fees are more than twice as high compared to the llm at soas (which also offers various courses in european law etc.)

good luck to you.

My advice is don't go for the LSE just because of the reputation. You have to be reasonably sure that you are doing the right course for the right reasons.

Ask yourself:

1. Which course is more useful to my career plan?
2. Which course would I find more interesting to me academically?

But at the end of the day, as a lawyer, an LLM is always going to look better. Look at more schools than the two you have mentioned so that you can make an informed decision. Best of luck with your applications!

Dear sooninlondon ,

Thank you so much for your reply :) As for your job reference, maybe you will find this site of some use:

www.legal500.com/devs/uk/frame/uk_fr.htm

This is a directory of UK law firms. Perhaps if you contact them directly, they will be able to help, or offer you a job.
Good luck :)

I have got offers from LSE and SOAS both for the LLM for 2007. LSE is about 3k more expensive and so trying to weigh up which one is a better LLM. Currently a junior solicitor in private practice and hoping to move to government/NGO legal work after the LLM. Any thoughts and comments would be appreciated as to which university you think is best. If anyone has gone to either Uni would especially like to hear your comments. many thanks.
