HK or London; English language in HK?
Hello,Tue Sep 19, 2006 08:22 PM perhaps someone can give me an advice: I plan to apply for an llm programme in 2007 but I cannot decide wether to go to London or to HK!!! I am very intereseted in Asia and the possibility to live in HK for an whole year is very appealing to me! I would love to get to know the culture and landscape. Although London is a great city; it just doesn't attract me as much as HK. I am from Germany, Berlin, and visited London some times. Without question it is THE city in Europe (together with Paris) but there is just no "adventure" about studying there. But there are of course very good reasons to study in London too: The language!! My English is quite bad and I need to boost it up. The great diversity of offered courses!!! The famous universities like LSE, Kings, UCL.... Probably better job opportunities afterwards. So... I don't know how to decide. It would help me very much if anyone can comment on the possibility to learn English in HK. Will I be fluent after one year?? Is it possible to learn Mandarin in one year? Of course not fluently but the basics?? Any opinions? |

Learning English in HK? Yes, the courses will all be taught in English and many lecturers are native English speakers. Learning Mandarin in HK in one year? I doubt it. First of all everybody speaks Cantonese, so you dont really have the language around you in everyday life. Second, they use traditional Chinese characters, which are not the characters mostly used by mainlanders/ the ones taught in Mandarin classes. Third, it's very tough to become fluent in Mandarin in one year even if you are studying it full-time. Wed Sep 20, 2006 11:15 AM But: if you just want to put it in you CV, its fine. Also, the city (HK) is certainly a great place to spend you LLM.. [Edited by Julius on 20 Sep 2006] |

For all I know all three are decent schools. There have been some extensive discussions on this topic. I recommend you try the board search.
