LLM in Intellectual Property without a law degree
Hello, guys.Mon Sep 25, 2006 08:19 AM My name is Ashley living in Seoul, South Korea. I have a bachelor's degree and a master's degree in Electrical Engineering from Seoul National University. I have been working for a law firm as a patent attorney for six years, and I also have a four-year's experience at the same law firm as a patent engineer. I'm trying to find a law school offering an LLM course specialized in Intellectual Property Laws, which accepts foreign students without a law degree. Wouly you kindly advise me of such law school in the States? [Edited 26 Sep 2006 by touchmenot] |

LLM in Intellectual Property without a law degree
Hi,Fri Dec 01, 2006 11:55 AM I work in The Edinburgh University, School of Law. We offer an LLM which I think you'll find very suitable. It's offered both via distance learning and also on-campus (www.law.ed.ac.uk/pg/itllm.aspx). Module titles available via distance learning include: Intellectual Property Law 1 - Copyright and Related Rights International Intellectual Property International IP & IT Institutions, Law and Policy Intellectual Property Law 2 - Industrial Property Intellectual Property and Technology - Developing Countries Managing Intellectual Property If that's of interest, don't hesitate to drop me a line via PM - or visit the website for my contact details. Good luck! Colin. [Edited 01 Dec 2006 by C.Miller] |

Take a look at the Master of Science in Intellectual Property Management course, at the National University of Singapore (NUS). It incorporates both the law and science, with the law segment offered by the NUS law school in the form of the Graduate Certificate in Intellectual Property (GCIP). This segment (which can be pursued by itself), together with the technology modules, make up the Master of Science (IP Management) degree. Thanks info. provided by Miller and NUSLLM-alantan. Would you kindly advise me of such law schools in the U.S.?Sat Dec 02, 2006 12:21 PM I have been working as a patent agent in China for 6 years. At the same time, I am conducting some research projects about patent analysis and evaluation for an academy. But I didn't have a law degree. My bachalor and master degrees are both Library Science. Next year, I will go to America as a visiting scholar for one year. I hope I can learn an LLM course specialized in Intellectual Property Laws in this given year. I searched several schools information, but they all require a law degree for the applicants. Would you kindly advise me of such law schools in U.S. without a law degree background? Thanks a lot. |

Hi,Tue Jul 22, 2008 01:21 PM From the info I've gathered from their websites, these american IP programs (eg. Stanford) you talk about also require a previous law degree? Do you have a link where you found your info? Because I'm a bachelor in electrical engineering and master engineering in Nanotechnology and Nanoscience and I would love to work in the field of creating/investing/buying/selling of small high-tech companies where knowledge of IP law is ofcourse very very useful. Really working as a (patent) attorney is not my goal I certainly welcome all advice about programs which you see most suitable to achieve this goal. The programs that caught my eye so far are MIPLC in Europe(Munich) and Stanford, Yale, Harvard FPierce in the states. However every program in the states seems to require a law degree. Thanks in advance for your responses |

Hey Anthony,Tue Jul 22, 2008 05:58 PM the info that I gave about the universities in the US and the programs offered by them......I could tell you that this information was authentic until last year as I had personally written to these universities to find out if they accept students with non-legal backgrounds.......I am not too sure if the admission requirements have been revised in this year.......may be the best thing to do is send them an email with ur qualification and ask them if you are eligible to apply. However I got admitted to MIPLC and about to finish my course in 8 weeks. The input I can give you is that the teaching and learning methodoloy at miplc is very very good. Also since they have faculty coming from all over the globe they provide a global perspective of the IP issues whether it be US, EU or Asia. My experience here has been very enriching not only for the law aspects but also on business aspects as miplc offers a number of business related subjects as well. hope this helps |
