Housing Situation in London
What do you recommend for housing in London: Is it better to search for private rooms or to live in a student housing offered by the universities? I think, the student houses are so expensive that it may be cheaper to find a private room...

Hi NisreenThu Jan 13, 2005 02:09 PM I am pretty sure that a private room will cost you at least as much as private housing, at least thats how it used to be a few years ago. |

Re: Housing Situation in London
All colleges have affordable halls of residence, if you consider 75 GBP affordable. You can get private rooms for 50 GBP but theses are usually in Zone 3-6. If you add the tube ticket, your costs are the same.Thu Jan 13, 2005 06:18 PM I think student housing is much better as the houses are usually in Zone 1 or 2 (the centre) which means you can go out at night without worrying about the tube. Some halls are not high standard (eg International Hall on Bloomsbury Square) but who cares. I think it's much better to live with other students anyway... As far as I know, UCL offers the best student residences. |

Yes. Life in London is short, so you do not calculate your rent for a month (like in other civilized countries) but per week!

Re: Housing Situation in London
I agree about the fact that student housing wont be more expensive than private housing but you will never find a place to stay for £50 and you'd be lucky to find somewhere for £75. Im currently living in South London and I pay £100 per week which doesnt include bills. Seriously consider studying in London as it is VERY expensive!!! Student housing is really fun, and its much better to live as close as possible to your campus, so halls is recommended. Good Luck x

Re: Re: Housing Situation in London
Cat, you are right that you will not get a reasonable room for £50, even in zone 6 you would only get a shack in a dodgy area...

The Princess of Sugarness :-)
Hello Cat, just looked at your website sugarcat.de. Very sweet, even though you could add some more pictures etc!. Is there - despite the roots in South Africa - any connection to Germany as you have a German domain?Fri Jan 28, 2005 06:31 PM Nik |

@CatSat Jan 29, 2005 10:48 AM if you study in London right now, you may be know about which law schools are the mots recommendable for the LLM. I heard UCL, King's and LSE are quite good. What do you think about this? Is there a great difference between these colleges? |

Housing Situation in London
All of the Universities you mentioned have excellent reputations. If I would stay in the UK for my masters I would definately apply to all these three. Good choices! :D x

Re: Housing Situation in London
I will, thanks Cat! I already should have my applications mailed for some time, but it's such a hassle to get all the reference letters and official transcripts et cetera together...

Re: Housing Situation in London
Hi dinodominik, many students will probably go for student housing, I will try to find a private shared flat - could you recommend areas that are interesting for / popular with international students to stay? Also is there any affordable place to stay for short term to look for a permanent place? Thank you!

Hi, dinodominik! Thank you for your post and link to a very useful (in nearest future) site... I hope it would help me.Sat Apr 09, 2005 09:28 PM Dear ZaraZeeD, I am also thinking about renting a flat...preferrably shared one. I will attend 05-06 LLM course with the UCL. Which institution you will attend? I have obtained a scholarship and money will be provided on some timely basis. These funds I can use either for renting a flat or paying for hall. So, I am in search for a flat-mates. Kindly yours, g |

Re: Housing Situation in London
I would try to stay in zone 2 of the tube network. Interesting places to live are: Notting Hill, Islington, Shoreditch, Brixton. I am not quite sure what you are looking for though. some of those places can be quite rough as well, but thats london for you. For £500 per month you should be able to find a nice room for a couple of months or longer. If you are looking below £400 you might find most places a bit run-down.
