Re: UPenn vs NYU?
If I were you,I would choose NYU.Wed Mar 30, 2005 02:57 PM Reason 1:UPenn is famous due to commercial law. Reason 2:According to the ranking,NYU is better. However, I should say the reason is not so important. Reason 3:It seems that the class of NYU has more students. Some people may think that it is a disadvantage, but I think it is better because you can discuss with people from many different countries. It is a great learning experience. Reason 4:NYU is located in New York.New York is a busy and prosperous city.It can bring you more information than Philly. It's my superficial view!!! |

Re: UPenn vs NYU?
I think that NYU's LL.M. class of 200 students is a little too big, at UPenn there are 80 students, and that was one of the reasons I decided to go there. Apart from that, Penn is a highly respected school, Philly is also a great city (although not as spectacular as NYC, of course). But it's really up to you, I suggest you do some research regarding the courses that both schools offer, their strength at some particular areas, that might be of interest to you, maybe some famous professors that teach there. True, Penn is a little lower in the US News ranking (although it's still easily a top 10 school), but I would say that the top 20 schools are very closely matched. Wed Mar 30, 2005 09:35 PM Moreover, Penn has a great alumni network in NYC, which might be helpful if you decide to try to find a job in the US |

Re: UPenn vs NYU?
Hi Supersonic1,Thu Mar 31, 2005 06:07 PM Sounds like you're sold on UPenn! The profs seem to be very supportive, helpful and accomodating. So far, they've really gone out of their way to answer questions. That definitely made a strong impression on me. Also, I've lived in NY before and I so I thought it might be fun to try a new city. Philly is supposed to be cultural and artsy, but I've never been myself. I'm still weighing out the course offerings of the two schools. Thanks for your comments and good luck to you at UPenn! |

Re: UPenn vs NYU?
Hi folks,Thu Mar 31, 2005 06:53 PM got into NYU, Chicago and UPenn.... I'll join UPenn because the courses a small, i'm into corporate law, philadelphia is cheaper place to live and the job placement is supposed to be good. the other two are better known here in Europe and of course very good... ...I am not getting any scholarship (I think I'm to old /30) of any of theme...but that would make me change mind... does anyone out there agree/not agree on my points? cu in philly |

Hello,Fri Apr 01, 2005 03:12 AM I think the most small program is Chicago. It only contains 50 students. If you want to go a smaller program,Chicago can satisfy you. Good luck! |

Re: UPenn vs NYU?
Hi Oli,Fri Apr 01, 2005 09:01 AM That sounds about right. I looked (very superficially) at apartments in NY last summer and saw listings for 1 bedroom rentals at around $2000. Of course, shares would be much cheaper as would campus housing at NYU. If you go on the off-campus housing registry at UPenn (go through the Admitted Students portal), you'll see apartment listings for less than half that. The only part I wouldn't agree with would be your age re: scholarships. I really don't think age discrimination is as much of an issue in the States as it may be in other parts of the world. At least, that is my experience. I knew of at least two students who were in their late thirties/early forties who received tuition fellowships to do their ll.m. They had very interesting backgrounds and experiences, but they were definitely not young spring chickens! So, if you're still waiting for a reply, there still may be a chance for you. Good luck! |

I've not heard from both NYU and Upenn. Are there any others waiting for their reply? Congratulations to those who have been admitted! :-)

Re: UPenn vs NYU?
plus Upenn is now ranked no.7 in the USNews ranking of top law schools in 2006, one place higher than last year, so you can see that the school is constantly improvingTue Apr 05, 2005 06:23 AM also, I forgot to mention one thing, that was actually the key factor when I was deciding where to do my LL.M. UPenn does NOT release any information concerning class ranks, meaning there's no sick competition between students. it really looks like a very friendly place, and I can't wait for the program to begin:) |

Re: UPenn vs NYU?
and one more thing:) during your LL.M. you are allowed to take two courses outside of the law school, in any of their graduate schools. I am planning on taking one or two courses at Wharton, which is perhaps the best business school in the US.

Hi Supersonic,Tue Apr 05, 2005 08:16 AM I agree with your points. I did not know about the class ranking, but that makes me even more positive about UPenn. you seem to know a lot about the University, maybe you can give me advise about which kind of housing is the best. of campus is supposed to be pretty cheap, on the other hand you get to know a lot of interesting people living on campus. tks Oli |

Re: UPenn vs NYU?
hi legal eagle,Tue Apr 05, 2005 08:50 AM tks for prompt reply. do you know somebody that lived in the Sansom? Is it nice? Old – new? What kind of students live in Sansom? average age? looked at the international house website, but it does not convince me. Planning on living off campus takes a lot of effort, particularly doing it from Europe...on the other hand, we will be in Philly very early due to the summer course. cu Oli |

Re: UPenn vs NYU?
I am currently living in New Jersey, and I am going to commute to classes, so I don't really know what housing options are available at UPenn.

Have any of you proceeded with your housing applications yet? I'm looking for a roommate to share a 2 br in Sansom Place..hoping to find one in the next few days, instead of relying on Upenn to allot me a random roommate...

HelloWed Apr 06, 2005 03:21 PM I am so happy to see so many UPenn students. I have not made my mind yet (accepted at NW e Uva) but I almost sure to attend UPenn.. So, does any one visit Sanson Place or the International House? Does any know if it is better to live on-campus or at CC?. Thank you and good luck to all. |

Re: UPenn vs NYU?
Hi folks, Wed Apr 06, 2005 05:19 PM 6 years ago I went to summer law school at the George Washington University, I stayed in a dorm on campus and it was a lot of fun – knowing myself I would not do a lot of studying if I stay at Sansom. I got some information from former LL.M. at Upenn about housing thru GOAT. The facility is not the last standart...I'll go off campus. are some of you guys on the GOAT discussion board? cu Oli |

Re: UPenn vs NYU?
well, I am one of those who didn't write there yet. last year it was the same, just have a look. one reason might be that poeple don't dare to write because you feel less free there and feel like the whole school is watching you. The second reason is, that lots of students havent made up their mind yet where to go. And, For example the one who started the board goes for harvard now... as you can read on this board... Wed Apr 06, 2005 09:35 PM cu there later ;) |
