PAST LLM STUDENTS - JOB EXPERIENCE

Hello everyone.

This post is for comments concerning the job opportunities arisen after your LLM.
I would be very curious to know where all the past LLM students (UK or US) work now and if their expectations have been satisfied or if they regret their choice.

An interesting thread Tortello. I wont answer from my perspective. Instead I'll provide a quote from one of the students from the LL.M Innovation, Technology and the Law (distance learning) the programme which I work on at The University of Edinburgh:

"I am an Assistant Solicitor in the Corporate Department of a firm of Solicitors. I work solely on IP/IT matters, e.g. licensing agreements, patent and trade mark applications, software development agreements, website terms and conditions, data protection, and e-commerce issues. I honestly don’t think I would have been offered my current job without having this LL.M from The University of Edinburgh. My new boss has since said that it was my enthusiasm for IP/IT which convinced him I would be able to do the job in the absence of practice experience in this field!"

Although this student was already qualified to practice law, and had been for some years, the LL.M provided the knowledge and advanced relevant skills to a move in to a specialised area of legal practice. This is a common goal set for an LL.M to be considered "successful" by those already in legal practice.

I think the quote could also be encouraging to anyone who is considering an LL.M to break the vicious cycle which occurs sometimes - you can't get a promotion because you don't have the experience, but can't get experience because you can't get promoted! An LL.M can help there too, and distance learning perhaps more so (because you don't have to take a career break to complete your programme). I asked the same student why choose distance learning, and the reply was that distance learning provided the perfect opportunity:

"...to study my chosen subject matter full-time but within my own time constraints."

I have other examples from other students from the LL.M via distance learning, but I'll wait to see if any other graduates answer in this thread first!
