That sounds about right.  I looked (very superficially) at apartments in NY last summer and saw listings for 1 bedroom rentals at around $2000.  Of course, shares would be much cheaper as would campus housing at NYU.  If you go on the off-campus housing registry at UPenn (go through the Admitted Students portal), you&#39;ll see apartment listings for less than half that.  

The only part I wouldn&#39;t agree with would be your age re: scholarships.  I really don&#39;t think age discrimination is as much of an issue in the States as it may be in other parts of the world.  At least, that is my experience.  I knew of at least two students who were in their late thirties/early forties who received tuition fellowships to do their ll.m.  They had very interesting backgrounds and experiences, but they were definitely not young spring chickens!  So, if you&#39;re still waiting for a reply, there still may be a chance for you.
