I looked (very superficially) at apartments in NY last summer and saw listings for 1 bedroom rentals at around $2000. Of course, shares would be much cheaper as would campus housing at NYU. If you go on the off-campus housing registry at UPenn (go through the Admitted Students portal), you'll see apartment listings for less than half that. The only part I wouldn't agree with would be your age re: scholarships. I really don't think age discrimination is as much of an issue in the States as it may be in other parts of the world. At least, that is my experience. I knew of at least two students who were in their late thirties/early forties who received tuition fellowships to do their ll.m. They had very interesting backgrounds and experiences, but they were definitely not young spring chickens! So, if you're still waiting for a reply, there still may be a chance for you. Good luck!
