Northwestern - Housing
Guys,Thu Apr 19, 2007 03:55 PM 90% probability that I will go to Northwestern. Any advices on housing? I have no idea where to live as the school does not have dorms. I prefer to be close to the school, but at the same time on a nice neighboor where I can find restaurants, supermarkets, bars... Any response would be greatly appreciated! Thanks! |

Thu Apr 19, 2007 07:36 PM Guys, NU does provide the Dorm. Its name is "Abbott Hall". This is the NU's apartment for law school students, medical school stuents (there is NU hospital nearby) and some NU employees. This one is the closest to the lawschool (around 2-3 mins). The building is a bit old but very convenient though as to the building's services, and safety. The school's book store is also under this building. Many NU's department is also in this building. The price is around USD 800-1100 depending on the size. The lawschool book store is also in this building. The information about Abbott Hall is available in the Website. However, mostly, NU law students live in following places; 1. Worcester House - price around 800USD/month - this building belongs to NU (not law school). It's like one and a half block from the law school. Next to the park. Furnished. Full of law school students, NU's employees and Med students. The building is pretty new. Always full and should make a reservation very early if you want this one. This is the most popular one but it a bit far from the grocery than Abbott and Ontarie (the following one). P.S. in order to get this building, you might need to try to contact current students in order to have them ask for the application form or contact information for you. The information of this building is not available on any website. The chance to get the room is based on first comes first serves basis. 2. Ontarie Apartment (Private) -on Ontarie Str. - like 3 blocks from law school. Unfurnished. Price around $800-1,000. Building is new and there is always a guard at first floor. My friend is living here. Many law school students also live here. Abbott and Ontarie are next to the Grocery. It's like the grocery is in the middle between them. These 3 apts. are pretty closed to the school anyway, so if you get one of these buildings, it is always good. |

Fri Apr 20, 2007 07:33 PM what 'bout closest groceries to Worcester house and public transportation For those who live in Worchester House, they will have to do grocery shopping at the same place as those who live in Ontarie and Abbott, meaning they have to work a little bit more far. (however, its just 2-3 blocks) As to subway, dont worry about that as those who live in these 3 building will have to work 2-4 blocks to the nearest subway....but the Worchester is the closest one Dont worry about transportation at all....everything is so convenient at NU..you will get a free pass for the entire year that you can use both with bus and subway.......NU Law School is just in the central of the downtown, meaning shopping street is just 5 mins from the school, subway 5-10 mins, grocery 2 block next to the school. If you want to do real cheap grocery shopping, you can take the subway to Vietnamese town (of course subway is free for you) which is like 15 mins from downtown. So whichever building you pick, you wont have problem with grocery and transportation at all. Following is rough picture of where each place is just for your imagination of the area, Worchester - Lawschool - Abbott- Grocery- Ontarie | | | Subway [Edited 20 Apr 2007 by Mint] |

Almost forget about the bars and restaurants that MariemBoston wants!!!Fri Apr 20, 2007 10:05 PM There are some reasonable restaurants for students on Ohio and Ontarie Str. (2 and 3 blocks from the school). 1 McDonald and 1 Starbucks. The school is also close to the "Watertower", a shopping center with 2 department stores and 1 food court inside. For the bars, NU area is not for a night life at all!!! You need to go out to other area by a cap or subway for the bars. Just want you guys to know that, NU area is not kind of "school campus" at all! You wont feel that. Rather, NU area (or downtown Chicago) is kind of middle to high profile area as you can go getting Louis Vuitton within 10 mins from the School. The area is loaded with branded name stores like, LV, Gucci, Cole Hann, Puma, Gap, Diesel, Cartier, Tiffani, etc, including big department stores like Neimann Marcus, SakFifth, Macy, Bloomingdales, Lord&Tailor..................thus, as the school is like 3 blocks behind of these stores, what you will see along the street are tourists, hotels, and nice restaurants!!! Bye Bye Campus Life!!! Anyway, unfortunately, as the area is shopping area, they are closed at 9pm weekdays and 6pm for Sunday...So sorry ....there will be only Starbucks, Mc, Donut, and Grocery store for you at night!! Cheers! [Edited 20 Apr 2007 by Mint] |

Sat Apr 21, 2007 06:58 AM Thanx Mint Well, I've never heard any complaint about noise at night, or even during the day. People living in the Abbott hall or other apartments nearby are completely working people or grad students, so they already pass the noise-making period of life. :D Oh, but the only noise that might annoy you is a "Siren" from the ambulances for all day all night as NU hospital is only one block from the school!!!! Regarding working hard, yes law student' life is tough but it is never tough enough for NU law students. We have "Bar Review", provided by SBA, every thursday for clubbing. Every first Friday of every month, the school provides free buffet-lunch, including beers and wines, for both JD and LLM. We do have time to seek for restaurants in other areas, including movie and shopping. Finally, of course, house parties are always held at somebody's place. So Dont worry that you life will only be on textbooks. Lots of fun there, though. [Edited 21 Apr 2007 by Mint] |
