University of New South Wales is the best. University of Sydney is almost as good. After that, UTS is probably third but it is a long, long way behind the first two, even if you do one of their specialty subjects.

Im interested in applying to Sydney too. Ive heard the reputation is great and they have a great method of classification - ie. you get the masters based on the subjects you choose eg environmental, PIL etc so you have a lot of control as to what you do. Be careful you apply to the right one though as there are a few in Sydney.
Good luck applying :D

I, too, am planning to apply to U. of Sydney. Is the program well recognized in the UK and/or the rest of Eurpope? I have also applied to LLM programs in London, but thought a year in Sydney would be great.

Im currently studying in London but dont want to continue to do an LLM here as I love travelling and combining it with studying is a ideal for me. Im applying all over Europe as well as SA and AUS. As far as Sydney's reputation in Europe Im not too sure but as its one of the better Aussie ones I think that it will carry well world-wide. Where are you now? :)

conrad: Re: LLM in Sydney

I attended the LLM program at the University of Sydney. I would recommend it. The University of Sydney (not Western Sydney or other Uni's in Sydney) is well recognized as the leading law school in Australia. It is also the oldest. UNSW and Melbourne are also top law schools. I applied and was accepted to Sydney and Melbourne, as well as Edinburgh and Manchester in the U.K. I did not apply to UNSW (I was not interested). I choose Sydney over Melbourne (and the others) for the following three reasons:

First, Sydney tuition was more affordable (esp. than Melbourne). Second, the Sydney program offered incredible flexibility and selection in course offerings and international study opportunities. I completed my LLM in one year with studies in Germany, China, and of course Sydney (check out the website for the details on Sydney's programs abroad). Thirdly, Sydney in my opinion is a more beautiful and dynamic city (esp. vs. Melbourne - although I am a big Australian Open tennis fan - it was definitely worth the weekend trip over). I preferred the warmer weather, beaches and the resources that this large metropolitan city provided. The harbour is also one of the most beautiful in the world.

My only reservations do not concern the program as much as the city and the country. First, Sydney is not a cheap place to live, although I found it comparable to any large international city in the western world. Second, as a foreigner, I would not recommend doing an LLM in Australia as a means to gain access to the job market there. A one year program will not get you permanent residency(anymore), and firms rarely consider foreigners for positions if they do not have permanent residency or 3-5 years of legal experience. As a Canadian (part of the British Commonwealth) not even I could gain permanent residency there nor could I get a job interview. I am currently an Adjunct Law Lecturer at a top university in Canada (just started), with a B.A. (Hons), JD, LLM, yet many medium to large Sydney firms (which I believe are narrow minded and elitist) would only really consider Australian graduates.

I hope this helps you all. I wish you all the best in your LLM endeavours.

LordWilberforce: Re: LLM in Sydney

This reply is specifically in response to Advokate; I think it is important to clarifiy issues relating to professional qualification and immigration in Australia.

I broadly agree with the comments by Conrad the Canadian, in this thread (above), with the exception that I think the strongest three law schools in Australia at the moment are ANU, Melbourne and Sydney. Please see my detailed comments on the LLMs at those schools under "LLM Rankings - Australia" at http://www.llm-guide.com/board/5203

The question of what specialization to take is up to you, Advokate. Unless you have some idea of which areas of law are of particular interest to you, you're unlikely to be (a) admitted to an LLM programme and (b) successful in one, even if you are admitted. That said, mining, energy & construction are hot at the moment, as is domestic M&A, and China deals.

But there are two very important points to make about your plans -

(a) Doing an LLM in Australia is insufficient to get Permanent Residence. If you wish to live and work in Australia, you will need to satisfy requirements under the Family, Business, Spouse, Humanitarian or Sponsored Work Visa requirements. Lawyers are not currently being accepted under the General Skilled Migration programme because Australia already has plenty of lawyers!

For further details, check the Department of Immigration web site at http://www.immi.gov.au/immigration.htm

(b) You should also be aware that an Australian LLM does fulfil either the academic OR the vocational qualifications required to practise in Australia. As an Indian-qualified LLB, you're likely to have to complete significant additional study.

For details, you'd be best to contact the Law Society of New South Wales at http://www.lawsociety.com.au

I hope that this does not disappoint you but it will be easier for you to plan if you have all the information. Good luck with your plans. Ironically, I'd love to work in India some day!

Oops, there was a typo there.

To clarify, I meant:

(b) You should also be aware that an Australian LLM does NOT fulfil either the academic OR the vocational qualifications required to practise in Australia. As an Indian-qualified LLB, you're likely to have to complete significant additional study.

i am new at this ... so please cut me some slack ...
as i understand this you say that as a guy coming from india, with an LLB ... even though i do a full time LLM from australia i will not be allowed to practice and as such i will have to come back after completing my course?

the thing is that i am planning to apply for LLM in australia this year ... from india ...

what options do i have?
