Is anyone planning on studying human rights law at NYU? I am, and wanted to discuss classes/clinics/fellowships, etc.

Thanks.

Hey, loneal27! I also plan to study Human Rights at NYU. Have you already chosen the courses you intend to take? Besides International Human Rights, I'm very interested in Immigration Law.
I recently received an e-mail from NYU explaining all the academic activities related to this area and it seams great. It's a pitty, though, that they haven't offered many interesting courses from previous years.

Hi folks
I'm also planning to take some courses in HR.
ptrio, I agree that the courses listed right now are really lacking but I am hoping that it's just because the schedule is incomplete. After all they cannot seriously go from having about 30 courses in international law in the Fall to having just 3 (at least I hope not)!

I hope that the current offering is not complete. I haven't yet chosen my courses because I am still waiting on my NetID (I just paid my deposit a few days ago). There are some "core" classes we have to take, correct?

Did you guys have NYU as your first choice for human rights? Have you gotten any opinions from anyone else regarding their program?

Hi guys...I just finished my LLm at NYU and took many classes focusing on human rights.

I would say first that I don't exactly know if some of these classes have been canceled for Fall 2008 or if there are new ones but I can tell you about my experience there if it is of any help for you...

international human rights with Alston was great because he is really an amazing professor, It is a big class with lots of "I am deeply concerned about human rights" people saying lots of non-interesting things but still the class is really worth taking it because of Alston. If you are interested in human rights you must take a class with him.

He also teaches children right (or something in this way...) which I did not take...but Iheard it was pretty interesting as well

Alston directed the IILJ colloquium which focused on human rights during SPring 07...I am not quite sure the colloquiium will have the same topic in 08 but it is an different kind of classes with very good guest speakers every week

otherwise there was an internationa criminal law class with Judge Goldstone, which is a seminar. It is interesting, but you might feel you learned more about Goldsonte than about ILC...I still recommend because he has an amazing experience of the field and is a really nice professor.

another class I liked was War Crime and Terror during the second term. Very very interesting debate about origins of terrorism, counter-terrorism strategies and so on...the two professors are incredibly involved and the seminar creates great discussions. The only thing is the readings are just enormous...I am not kidding

last thing, if you are interested in human rights, try to get in touch with people of the Center for human rights and global justice who are searching for people doing research and offers internships ( I am currently at the ICTY thanks to a fellowship for instance). the clinique in human rights is direcvted by people of the Center. I did not take it but heard it was very demanding (ok but 6 credits...) but great...

I hope this information is helpful and even if I am sure Columbia and others also have great programs in human rights, I can only tell that I really enjoyed studying it at NYU

best,

V.

Thanks for that Vince. I'm planning on applying to the clinic, and also the War, Crime & Terror course sounds really interesting.
