Law in UK for a student from India??
hi.... I m a C.S. (Company Secretary) with a LLB (Bachelor of Law) from India. I am interested in pursuing a career in the "corporate" field only and have no intentions as of now of practising with a law firm. I m interested in pursuing a good INTERNATIONAL degree/ course in law (no specific field of law) from UK or USA which would add value to my profile and experience. I am then keen on having a career in India or UK (though i am aware that getting an employment visa in UK is a big task, but i am still keen on UK!!). Please advise!!

hi Arun, thanks for the reply. Can you suggest a good law course in UK with details as to university or website. Further, would help if you could give me details as to your education etc. Are you a CS too or are you based in UK?

there's a good post also from Carter which you could check, it has the important links to the law societies of Britain. If you were interested in qualifying to practice law here you should contact them to see what they suggest;Wed May 09, 2007 09:49 AM www.llm-guide.com/quote/31024 |

Law in UK for a student from India??
Dear Shika,Wed May 16, 2007 02:58 AM I have just completed the chartered secretarial course in Malaysia which is affiliated with the UK ICSA and therefore the graduateship is transferable. I have also recently applied to UCL, SOAS and QML (yes, probably too late) for their LLM programs. After completion of the LLM, I intend to seek employment in UK as an inhouse counsel too. I have also passed the QLTT and now a qualified solicitor in UK. I spoke to a few recruiters in UK and according to them the LLM (banking and financial) is strongly encouraged as it would help to open more doors. Good luck. |

hi Lucyliu, thanks for ur inputs. I am sorry, but can you please tell me more on the UCL, SOAS and QML, probably their websites to enable me to get more info on the same. Also, if you could tell me more on QLTT? What is that, how does one enrol etc... Are you planning to do the LLM? Finally, it seems you and me share the same career goals!! all the best to you too!! Law in UK for a student from India??
Dear Shikha,Fri May 18, 2007 03:08 AM UCL, SOAS and QML are some of the top universities in UK. Their websites are as follows:- www.ucl.ac.uk/laws/prospective/llm/ www.soas.ac.uk/law www.law.qmul.ac.uk LSE and KCL are well known for their LLM programs too but unfortunately they have stopped accepting applications. I have applied to UCL and QML for their LLM specializing in banking and financial law and to SOAS for its MSc in Finance and Financial Law. Still awaiting for offers. Very pricey though. QLTT is the conversion test that allows foreign lawyers to qualify as solicitors in England and Wales. Please refer to the Law Society of England and Wales to check whether you qualify to sit for the QLTT. www.lawsociety.org.uk/home.law www.qltt.co.uk/ Hope the above helps.....Good luck. |

Law in UK for a student from India??
I am a law student from Bangladesh. I have worked here for four years in Corpportae Finance and Company secretarial matters. I am planning to have my LLM next year from UK. Mon Sep 17, 2007 08:15 AM Could anybody tell me what is the prospects of overseas lawyer having UK LLM from a good school, in the UK job market? Not necessarily should be in the big law firm or large multinational company. In any other related jobs in banks or financial institution? Corporate or legal secretarial job? I have also completed QLTT. If there is any prospect, which subject is better? IP, Banking and finance, Competition or commercial law? What is the scenario in Scotland? Hows the job market there? If you do an LLM here, you may stay upto two years. Regards, Ashraf |
