Hi, my name is Grisselle. I'm panamenian. I'm 23 years old. I'm interested in getting a Master in Maritime Law and I want to apply for the academic year 2008-2009. One of my options is to study in the UK. I have been thinking in:
University of Southampton
University of Wales Swansea
University of Bristol
Nottingham University
I need information. I want to know how hard is to get in one of these schools, what are their requirements and their quality. If you can suggest me other options, go ahead :)
By the way, I forgot to tell you that right now I'm working on my thesis, I don't have working experience and my school mark (grade) is 2.55/3.00 Could I be consider?

Hi mate,

I have completed my LLm in Maritime law in Swansea University. In fact, I visited both UCL and Southampton beforehand. I decided to go to Swansea as I felt that there was a strong team there and they cared about students. UCl does not have a single full-time professor working in maritime law. So'ton used to be teh place but nowadays it's all about talk!! They also don't care about students- I heard that they put 100 students in the same room and call it LLM teaching. I was so right to go to Swansea. I had a brilliant year. I studied 4 modules taught by people who are experts. I am in a good position now. Swansea lecturers do training for City Law firms! That's how recognised the people and the degree is. Go to Swansea. You'll not regret it!

Thank you Bora. It seems to me that Swansea is one of the best option. My professors told me that I should go for Swansea, but I want students opinions, people that have the experience in this programme, so thanks a lot. Could you tell me more about your LLM in Swansea and if you can give some tips for the application process.

haha i think you're better off in NUS then though i have already expressed my reservation on a separate forum.
comments made about UCL is completely unjustified.
For one, i have not even heard about the university of swansea
And please, you do not need to go alll the way to Greece to specialise.

Look mate

you need to be in a place where there is a strong team and they care for students- Nottingham and Bristol are out as they have only a few lecturers in maritime law. Southampton and Swansea have institutes so lots of ppl working in the field but in Southampton you will be a number- the University is so commercial that they take more ppl to LLM than they should- so u will end up in a big class not have personal attention of any professor and regret it so much- when I did my LLM in Swansea there were 3 ppl in our class who came from Southampton LLM (they all left 2-3 weeks after the course started there) and they all said that Swansea was a better place both in terms of enviornment and in terms of academic support. I would suggest that you go to Swansea. All the best!

As no one on this list pointed out that City has a Maritime course I will do so.

We offer Marine Insurance, Carriage of Goods by Sea and Admiralty Law. In addition, we offer the prospect of an internship in shipping law with one of the specialist practices and small classes.

I have been told by a current City student that the Maritime Law course at City Uni is desgined to meet the interests of potential Greek students.

After all, we should not forget Sir Stelios financial contribution to the school and the university in general.

In reply to which is better - Swansea or Southampton. The students of either will maintain "their" university is best, making comparisons difficult. I can, however offer my own opinion. I studied at Southampton for an LLM in Maritime Law. Aside from the academic element I have friends for life - which has helped my professional career. I don't doubt this would be the case if you went to Swansea.

Much has been mentioned about the large numbers of students at Southampton. There is no denying that approx 100 people are on the course, but this makes little difference to lecture quality. Tutorials / Seminars are in groups of 10 (max) and make for lively debate - and also add a 'personal' element. As I have mentioned in previous posts, lecturers at Southampton are at the leading edge of their field - A cursory glance at the library bookshelves show how influential and forward thinking the Southampton lecturers are. Or just look at the delegations who have, and currently are, negotiating the numerous international conventions, I can guarantee you will find a lecturer at Southampton involved.

As you can ascertain I thoroughly enjoyed my time in Southampton, and would recommend the course to anybody. Good luck in whatever you choose.

I did the LLM in International Commercial and Maritime Law at Swansea University and the only thing I can say is that it was one of the best experiences in my life! Excellent teaching team! I do not know where to start from... Professor Thomas, Professor Williams and Dr Baris Soyer are the best teaching team. And I also felt that I was not a "number" in Swansea. Small teaching groups where students interact with the lecturers. The LLM in Swansea has helped me find a very good job in a law firm where I practise what I have learnt from my top professors.

Hi all,

I was thinking about studing maritime law but how easy is to find job in this field ? I was looking aroud at ads. for some time but hardly can find any. I am quite surprised how many people are intrested in this program.
Do you people want to specialize truly on maritime or keep more dors open in case you wont find suitable job ?

Thanks
Jimpo

Hello Jimpo, hello everyone,

I guess that only time will tell whether attending a LLM programme in Maritime Law will have been the right decision. Nevertheless, I have the strong notion that most of the people attending a LLM programme in this field already have more or less elaborated plans or even a concrete perspective for the future.

Of course, few and far between you will find some students who just want to spend "another year of fun" before entering the job market, but I think they are rather scarce compared to other, more general programmes.

Regarding the lack of respective job adverts I would refrain from drawing any quick conclusions - the positions to fill might be there though.
In which country do you want to find a job in this field?

Hello Puppy,
well, without more information it will be difficult for the board members to give any opinion, let alone advice.
That said I think that Nottingham certainly is a solid choice.

Bye

I have read all of the above posts with interests.

Greece is in fact very strong in the field of shipping but I would not recommend studying in Greece. It is a wonderful country (and I speak from long term experience) BUT considering maritime law around the world is based upon English law you are best off studying in England.

Having done the Maritime LLM at Southampton myself I would strongly recommend it! The professors are wonderful and some of the best regarded academics in the field.

The class consists of people from around the world and it is highly educational to hear about the legal system in different countries. Both the lectures and the seminars are well structured and students are given plenty of individual attention.

I wish you the best of luck wherever you chose to go.
