I don't think you should worry too much about the official letter. It will come.Thu Mar 27, 2008 03:17 AM About colleges, I am still glad NOT to have chosen Ustinov. Unless you want yourself to be too boring by just living with the post-grads, it's better to stay with and mingle with the undergrads. It's more exciting to be with them. All my friends here are undergrads and I enjoy it a lot. About clubs, you should try "Klut", the notorious worst club of Europe. It's just a marketing strategy though. In fact, it's relatively more expensive there. Just a word of advice, it is not true that Durham is boring. Those who say so simply lack interpersonal skills. If you want to be bored by staying in your rooms and just tinker with your computer, go ahead and be bored for 1 year. Know people and meet new friends. To my fellow Asians: Being from a different country is not an excuse to talk to British students. They are not snobbish as what other people might say. Lastly, the collegiate system is simply amazing! If you don't get to OxBridge, Durham is it! Good or bad most of the rejects are in Durham and these are the students from the most affluent families in the UK, i.e. they come from the most exclusive schools. :-) |

I didn't choose a college in my application form. Does the university point a college for me? Or should I contact the college directly? What should I do now?

Thu Mar 27, 2008 06:32 PM Hi guys! I do not know whether in the last years more than 50% of the students in the LLM programme came from China, but I can tell you that this year there are at least ten students in LLM...as we have a bbs and I know some students who are heading for Durham llm except me... However, I don't think it is a good thing with so many Chinese students together...I am eager to make friends with students from other countries with different background... Yes. It's true that there are many Chinese In Durham but I'm sure it's a worldwide phenomenon. I went to visit a mate in Cambridge and it's the same thing.Thu Mar 27, 2008 07:17 PM If you take International Trade and Commercial Law, chances are you'll have lots of Chinese classmates. If you opt for European Law or General LL.M., then you'll have European classmates. There are also lots of Germans in the LL.M. Program this year. The problem with the Chinese is that they do not socialise with other nationalities and that they usually groups amongst themselves. In the end, they do not improve their English. In my case, although I have mates from the LL.M. most of the people I hang out with are Erasmus Students. Your life in any university you'll go to is always what you make out of it. As I previously said, if you want your life to be boring, just stay in your room and don't attend the formals. Formal Dinners in colleges are "gowned". We're like in the Harry Potter movie. Hope that helps. |

Thanks very much mtz, I really appreciate your help. You are right. Some Australian friends of mine told me that Chinese students in their country also have such problems.Fri Mar 28, 2008 03:44 AM My English is not good and I really want to improve it. Moreover, I want to be friends with all my classmates. I will try my best ^_^ |

hey bayonet,Sun Mar 30, 2008 03:47 PM where are u from? i am enjoying my stay in j. butler despite the fact that it's quite far from town. ustinov has the same problem. good thing is that we have the best accommodation. we have our own toilet, a "relatively" good gym, and modern facilities. other colleges just have traditions to boot but they are old and the heating facilities are malfunctioning. hahaha! they share their toilet with i-dont-know how many people. sometimes 2 or at the most 7? :-( my only advice as always is for you guys to go out and meet other people. you're coming here for the entire package and not just to study. if you're mixed with undergrads, some of them are quite shy (not snobbish). you have to initiate the conversation. otherwise, you'll get BORED! |

Hi everyoneSun Mar 30, 2008 07:19 PM I have an unconditional offer to study for LLM international trade and commercial law at Durham, so I would be thankful if you would give me some details about the university and its law school, can you tell how much does it coast to live there for a postgraduate student (including accommodation)? |

The details on how much you should pay for your tuition and accommodation fees are all outlined in your offer letter.Sun Mar 30, 2008 07:29 PM As regards your monthly expenses, that would usually depend on how much you party and/or get drunk (!!!). LOL! If you just want the LL.M. degree and you just want to survive (on a subsistence level), perhaps 200 pounds will be enough. However, please note that you will be extremely bored with this kind of lifestyle. With 200 pounds/month, I believe you can also have a few drinks. If you want to live a comfortable life, 500 pounds (or more) per month would be sufficient. Hope that helps. mario |

I will be also there...starting with this October. I choose Ustinov and i am still waiting for their confirmation. the accomodation at Ustinov costs me around 4600 for the entire year - what about the costs within the other colleges? How is the LLM in International Trade and Commercial Law? which modules did you take?

Hey guys,I just rejected UCL's offer and decided to go to Durham this Oct.I'm not sure if it's a right decision.Hopefully it is.Wed Jul 16, 2008 08:48 AM I was allocated to Ustinov College.I didn't fill in college preference on the application form. But now I'm aware that its location is quite far from law school and city centre. I'm sure in the coming new term we international students will enjoy a fantastic time in Durham!! Any one wants to make friends with me please send me personal messages!Thank you!
