I have an unconditional offer to study for LLM international trade and commercial law at Durham, so I would be thankful if you would give me some details about the university and its law school, can you tell how much does it coast to live there for a postgraduate student (including accommodation)? , I do have other offers from Nottingham, Manchester so what do you think

Hi Fai,

Durham has quite a small law department, but there is a big international presence for Masters students. The law library in durham is one of the best I have come across. Durham is completely different from Manchester and Nottingham. It is a much smaller city, and not a campus based university as in Nottingham. However it has a very good reputation nationally, and probably the better law department of the other two you have been accepted into. There is a very high quality of teaching at the university, through lectures and tutorials. If you live in a catered college, accomodation costs will be around 1200 pounds a term, however this is reduced radically if you choose not to be catered. The average rent for a room in Durham outside of a college is 50 to 70 pounds a week. Hope this is helpful.

mtz94: Who's heading to Durham Universitythis year?

I don't think you should worry too much about the official letter. It will come.

About colleges, I am still glad NOT to have chosen Ustinov. Unless you want yourself to be too boring by just living with the post-grads, it's better to stay with and mingle with the undergrads. It's more exciting to be with them. All my friends here are undergrads and I enjoy it a lot.

About clubs, you should try "Klut", the notorious worst club of Europe. It's just a marketing strategy though. In fact, it's relatively more expensive there.

Just a word of advice, it is not true that Durham is boring. Those who say so simply lack interpersonal skills. If you want to be bored by staying in your rooms and just tinker with your computer, go ahead and be bored for 1 year.

Know people and meet new friends.

To my fellow Asians: Being from a different country is not an excuse to talk to British students. They are not snobbish as what other people might say.

Lastly, the collegiate system is simply amazing! If you don't get to OxBridge, Durham is it! Good or bad most of the rejects are in Durham and these are the students from the most affluent families in the UK, i.e. they come from the most exclusive schools. :-)

I do not know whether in the last years more than 50% of the students in the LLM programme came from China, but I can tell you that this year there are at least ten students in LLM...as we have a bbs and I know some students who are heading for Durham llm except me...

However, I don't think it is a good thing with so many Chinese students together...I am eager to make friends with students from other countries with different background...

mtz94: Who's heading to Durham Universitythis year?

Yes. It's true that there are many Chinese In Durham but I'm sure it's a worldwide phenomenon. I went to visit a mate in Cambridge and it's the same thing.

If you take International Trade and Commercial Law, chances are you'll have lots of Chinese classmates. If you opt for European Law or General LL.M., then you'll have European classmates. There are also lots of Germans in the LL.M. Program this year.

The problem with the Chinese is that they do not socialise with other nationalities and that they usually groups amongst themselves. In the end, they do not improve their English.

In my case, although I have mates from the LL.M. most of the people I hang out with are Erasmus Students.

Your life in any university you'll go to is always what you make out of it. As I previously said, if you want your life to be boring, just stay in your room and don't attend the formals. Formal Dinners in colleges are "gowned". We're like in the Harry Potter movie.

Hope that helps.

hey bayonet,

where are u from? i am enjoying my stay in j. butler despite the fact that it's quite far from town. ustinov has the same problem.

good thing is that we have the best accommodation. we have our own toilet, a "relatively" good gym, and modern facilities. other colleges just have traditions to boot but they are old and the heating facilities are malfunctioning. hahaha! they share their toilet with i-dont-know how many people. sometimes 2 or at the most 7? :-(

my only advice as always is for you guys to go out and meet other people. you're coming here for the entire package and not just to study. if you're mixed with undergrads, some of them are quite shy (not snobbish). you have to initiate the conversation. otherwise, you'll get BORED!

The details on how much you should pay for your tuition and accommodation fees are all outlined in your offer letter.

As regards your monthly expenses, that would usually depend on how much you party and/or get drunk (!!!). LOL!

If you just want the LL.M. degree and you just want to survive (on a subsistence level), perhaps 200 pounds will be enough. However, please note that you will be extremely bored with this kind of lifestyle. With 200 pounds/month, I believe you can also have a few drinks.

If you want to live a comfortable life, 500 pounds (or more) per month would be sufficient.

Hope that helps.

I was allocated to Ustinov College.I didn't fill in college preference on the application form. But now I'm aware that its location is quite far from law school and city centre.
I'm sure in the coming new term we international students will enjoy a fantastic time in Durham!!

As far as I know, the Harry Potter was once filmed in the Durham castle, just one film site maybe...Some people say that the real life in Durham University is similar to the life in Harry Potter movie..

By the way, I'll live in Bulter college during the 1 month pre-sessional course~~~

Hey mtz94, how is you diss going? I cannot stand the damn rain at the moment.

Guys, If you are still looking for a good college, I recommend Hatfield, of course. Look at the Hatfield MCR webpage (http://www.dur.ac.uk/hatfield.mcr) and get involved.

hi helen

u can call blueline taxi at 0191 262 6666.

it offers the cheapest rates from newcastle airport to durham. normally, it will cost u around 40 pounds but blueline only charged me 34 pounds the last time. the drivers are also very friendly.

hope that helps

glad to meet so many guys heading to Durham!
I'll join the university college, anyone same as me? cuz I heard it's the oldest and a very good one so I applied. But it's a pity that postgraduates cannot live in the castle.

It seems that mtz94 is a very interesting person. would u like to tell me the places of fun in Durham?

hi anna,

The Castle is indeed the most prestigious college in durham. unfortunately, postgrads cannot live in the college.

regarding ur question on places of fun, it really depends on what u mean by "fun"... if u have a messenger, u can add me and perhaps u can ask all questions u want. cheers!
