An LL.M is certainly helpful to get a good legal job. I would say nearly essential if you wish to join one of the top international firms, but it is not a requisite to work as a lawyer in many EU countries.

This matter has been discussed at lenght in old threads. A nice starting point may be: www.llm-guide.com/boardsearch/63/q/practice

Re-UK requirements, do not forget to check :
www.lawsociety.org.uk/ (England & Wales)
www.lawscot.org.uk/ (Scotland)
www.lawsoc-ni.org/ (Northern Ireland)

Good luck!
