If this is true, and I have no idea if it is, then it follows that not getting into one's college of choice suggests one is not a 'top canddate', which doesn't bode well for that same person obtaining merit based funding/ Obviously, to the extent that these two 'comptetitons' look to different criteria, then the argument is comprimised. So, it's not that college rejection will affect funding directly, it's just that such rejection suggests one is perhaps not the cream of the crop. Considering everyone who applies is automatically considered for the Clarendon funding then you are competing again all those people many of whom got into their college of first choice. I imagine the criteria the colleges use are the same as those the International Office uses (with the exception of those colleges that have a limit on cetain types of students). Tis harsh, I know. Could be wrong though. The IO may look at different criteria from the colleges. I am not sure where you read that there were criteria other than merit at Oxford but I imagine some colleges could choose based on class, race, religion, parental connections, bribery and so on. Of course I see your point that refusal from the college can influence somehow scholarship application. I don't know about the Clarendon info. That being said I am not sure the date one submitted the application will affect the outcome although if your application was submitted to a second college that might slow things down somewhat. I didn't mean to suggest that refusal from a college would influence the scholarship application (like you said, it shouldn't) but just that the same criteria might be used for both, which is what Craig2 was probably getting at.
