IP in Alicante or Edinburgh

I am considering enrolling on LLM Innovation Technology and the Law at Edinburgh, or Magister Lvcentinvs Master of IP law at Alicante. The latter is decidely cheaper for me since I want to pick up a new language and distance learning from Edinburgh is very expensive. Any advice gratefully received Thanks Laura

RR Joined: 07 Mar 2007 Posts: 22	IP in Alicante or Edinburgh Mon May 21, 2007 07:30 PM You can find information concerning the postraduate programs in IP offered by Robert Schuman University at the following website: www.ceipi.edu/ the CEIPI at Robert Schuman University offers 4 different Masters of Law in Intellectual Property and European Studies. 3 of them are conducted in french and one of them is offered entirely in english. The programs offered by the University are the following; - The Master in Industrial Property, Contracts, Competition Law - The Master in Intellectual Property, Distribution Networks, International Trade Law - The Master of Intellectual Property Law and Management (MIPLM) - Master in Research and Intellectual Property As far as I know, Robert Schuman offers some of the best programs in IP. Queen Mary, Alicante, Franklin Pearce Center and George Washington also have an excellent reputation in IP. WIpo and Turin University also offer a Master Degree but I am no sure if it is a good program or not. The fact that you have a bilingual master is so useful...you get your degree AND on top of that you can add another language to your CV (I'm not Spanish nor did I speak Spanish when I came here). The master is made for lawyers and it is very practical, it deals with daily issues that always come up in the office. People are helpful and friendly. Materials are available online, so you download those which interest you the most. Of course, you have to work hard - but that's the trade off, right? :). You get lots of useful contacts and you also get to know people from the OHIM. In terms of facilities, the University of Alicante is deemed to be one of the best ones in Spain, and I guess the reputation is true: the campus is full of gardens, beautiful buildings, nice cafes...This Uni was even mentioned as a success case in a Greek newspaper, so imagine! I'm also thinking about applying to the University of Alicante to do the LL.M. Program. I was so happy to read that you didn't speak Spanish when you got there... because I would totally love to go to Spain for an LL.M. Program, but my Spanish is not at all good, even though I've had 3 years of it in school. I got the impression it was a requierement to have high language skills in Spanish... I was so worried about it. Can you tell a little about having the lectures in Spanish (and not knowing it so good or at all). Would you say the courses are merely in Spanish or English? The thing is that I am Portuguese, which is a very close language to Spanish. This basically means that when I arrived to Alicante I could understand a bit of Spanish, although I couldn't speak at all. But it is a language that is more or less easy to learn (for me, as a Portuguese). Nevertheless, there were students from previous years from countries that do not have Spanish as their mother tongue, and they did great. This last year, for instance, the best student was a girl from Czeck Republic that almost didn't know any Spanish...she was attending Spanish courses throughout the whole year and her Spanish developed greatly. And as a matter of fact the language requirements regarding English are more exigent than those concerning Spanish. Some courses are in Spanish, others are in English, it depends on the lecturer. I there anybody on this forum who has done this master in Alicante? Can you give me some more information on the educational level of the course; I mean the academic quality of the LL.M. Also; do you think this master has a good reputation throughout the world? Is it possible to take only classes in english or do you also have to take some in spanish? (I do speak basic spanish, but I would just like to know :-)) Are there a lot of optional courses? Is it possible to specialize in a particular part of IP through optional courses? Or is that only possible through the choice of the thesis? Finally; are there a lot of international students taking this master? Or is the majority spanish? Do you have good job prospects after graduating? For example, what is your job now, after finishing this master? ...I didn't know I had so many questions :-)) thanks in advance! Val

EDIpostgrad Joined: 31 Mar 2008 Posts: 44	IP in Alicante or Edinburgh Fri Sep 19, 2008 03:21 PM The IP LLM in Edinburgh is excellent and if you are worried about other locations due to possible language deficiencies then Edinburgh would put your mind at ease. The programme has a dedicated research centre called SCRIPT Centre www.law.ed.ac.uk/ahrc/teaching/index.aspx and they are in the process of putting together a very large conference in March of 2009 that has many keynotes that are reknown internationally in the field. The faculty is top at Edinburgh and they are all very committed to creating the best programme available. They also have a very strong PhD programme and the PhD students are essential to the innovative research done at the centre. I have worked with several of the students and faculty at the centre and can give nothing but rave reviews (though my field is different entirely). I am not familiar with Alicante but I strongly suggest keeping Edinburgh at the top of your list! Best of luck.
