Is anybody starting the LLM in Public International Law, University of Oslo, in September? Does anybody know how good the program is?

I'm not taking the LLM, but I have studied law here since 2001 and is currently employed at the institute for public and international law. I would estimate/guess that while it cannot compete with the best, well-known LLMs in PIL out there, it is not bad. The teachers are leading PIL-experts (in Norway) with international experience and varied background. I think the student group is rather small, so it should be possible to have a social experience as well. In order to getting in contact with the locals, it could be wise to is become involved in various student groups, such as Amnesty International at the law school.

Thanks for your message. I have been researching the LLM program in Norway for sometime now. Since you have already studied law at the school, can you say that every graduate of the LLM program goes ahead to get a good job? Where are they usually sought after?

Hi, I wish I could say that every grad of the LLM prog goes ahead to get a good job, but honestly I have no idea. There is an alumni page showing at least some e-mail adresses on the programme's website. Perhaps you can contact some of them? I guess it depends on background, grades, other skills, etc.

As for PIL LLMs in Norway, I suppose there is some demand, again pending on grades, other skills etc. For jobs in Norway, at least in the Government, I suppose working knowledge of Norwegian is a prerequisite. Without knowledge of Norwegian, I suppose some of the international companies, such as the oil company Statoil-Hydro, can be possible options, at least if an international career is the aim. But again, these jobs are highly sought after. It would probably be an asset if you yourself has background from a country where the relevant company is doing business.

However, attending the LLM program costs only 65 $.

Hello there,

I am planning to apply there but for 2008/2009 year. I will graduate law next year in Bosnia but I will apply before my graduation because of the deadline, I think it is 1 February every year. Am I right?

Anyway, I hope I will be accepted. Just in case I won't, I will apply in Sweden, too. So, maybe I see you guys there.

Does anyone of you know something about scholarships?

As for scholarships, read the question two posts up and my answer below: There are none, unless you can get from your own uni.

Hi Humber,

Thanks for the information. I saw that there is only the Quota Scholarship but for students who are coming from Universities that are having some kind of agreement with Oslo University. My University doesn't have so I must look somewhere else for financial aid.

It is enough that there is no a tution fee so at least something.

There is a list here of countries within the quota scheme from the state´s student loan agency: www.lanekassen.no/templates/Page____7891.aspx

You can check if your county is on the list. These are not scholarships, however, but loans and grants (that will stay interest free for a while (ca. a year after you have finished) and the interest is generally low)

Yes, my country is on the list for the Quota Scheme. I am from Bosnia and Herzegovina. So, I have to apply for a loan or a grant and after I finish my Master's I can give them back money they gave me. Did I understand well? Can I return money in instalments?

sure, no prob. I think the amount is usually 80.000 norwegian kr, aprox. 10.000 € pr year, divided into 16.000 (€ 2.000) in January and August, and 6.000 (€ 750) pr. month, excluding June and July when there is no payment.

You can return the money in kind installments, no worries:)

Hi Humber,

Thanks! I have just seen the site you recommneded.
First of all I have to apply to one of Norway's Universities and then if they accept me I can apply for a loan or a grant.

Grant: money you are given.
Loan : money I must pay back.
Financial support: sum total of grants and loans.

I know that I need per month approximately about 700-800 euros. So let's say 800 x 12 months = 9 600 euros.

I will see what I will do....don't know yet what to do. May be they don't accept me after all :-))))

So, you are living in Norway as I understood. How is living there?
