Hi,

Could anyone with LLM in Commercial Law Edinburgh experience tell me where (in their opinion) this course stands in comparison with other Commercial Law LLMs of other UK universities?

And by the way (random question, but...) would better law firms in UK consider you if you have a Commercial Law LLM from Edinburgh, BA and MA from a university in the Baltic States and a few years of M&A Law experience in a pretty good law firm in the Baltic States? Generalizing this question - does LLM at one of Top10 unis in UK bring you anywhere closer to a decent lawyers position in UK?

Would be grateful if you shared your opinion with me ;) And sorry I am bad at cutting my questions short ;)

Sincerely

JS

I'm not really sure of where it stands with regards to Commercial Law; most people tell me that if it's Commercial law specialisation that you're looking for then the London Schools (LSE in particular) is more highly regarded. But one thing's for sure is that Edinburgh has got a fantastic reputation for international law, one of my professors taught there a few years ago. I'm applying to Edinburgh as well, but for a general LLM.

As for the decent lawyers position, I've spoken to some top notch large city firms in London - some said an LLM will give you an edge, some said no. But my opinion is that studying in different jurisdictions might be useful in portraying rich life experiences and the different perspectives that you may acquire; I'm assuming you're an international student so you can use that to your advantage! And some firms do look out for that.

Hope that helps! =)

i am not sure about the reputation of the commercial law specialisation but from what I have done google and read i nthis board so far, Edinburgh has a very good reputation.

I, infact, have applied to the LL.M Commercial programme two weeks ago.

I was informed by a person working for the university that this year LLM programme will have a little change. each subjects' credit will be decreased from 40 to 20 , so students will have to study 6 subjects to complete the course. Anyway, I don't check on the website, so i am not sure that this information is confirmed.

The programme is great at Edinburgh. The minor changes to the credit system actually allows a bit more flexibility in the programme. Additionally, they have just launched a new research centre for Commercial Law which should be an excellent source for students studying at Edinburgh.
Good luck!
