Joseph1: Oxbridge colleges

Has anyone been accepted to a college for the LLM/BCL/MJur yet?

If so, please state which one and whether there are any special factors that might have made a difference (e.g. if you have a Rhodes or other major scholarship).

For the record, I have not heard from any colleges.

Joseph1, as I think I mentioned in one of my PMs, I have been accepted to Balliol in Ox, which normally doesn't accept MJurs, only BCLs, so in my case it was a bit strange :) I received a letter from them even before I received an official letter from the Law Faculty.
And yes, I have been awarded a scholarship. Maybe this helped them to reach a decision so quickly.

For what I have heard from an Oxbridge student, the college doesn't really make a big difference for a graduate law student, since classes are held together for students from all colleges and it is possible to have a tutor from a different college.

I've just seen that I have been admitted to my first choice college in Cambridge, Wolfson. I applied there because it is one of the graduate colleges, guarantees accomodation and seems to be less formal than the others. I know that it is not one of the old and famous colleges. Apart from that, I don't know a lot about it. Therefore I would be glad about any information, from social life to food quality...

Hi,

I got into both my colleges at Cambridge, Selwyn and Trinity College. Even though Trinity is more renowned my first choice was Selwyn, it is smaller, guarantees accommodation and I have been told my friends that it has a friendly postgrad community.

You are right Joseph but, I got a scholarship in one and the other was my first choice. In this situation you are allowed to transfer from your first choice college into one that has offered you a scholarship. So, you can get accepted into two in these circumstances. However, usually you only get one offer.

Wow, that's amazing. How did you get offered a scholarship from Trinity when you didn't apply to them for a place (i.e. your papers would not have been sent to Trinity)?

I have heard of such things happening, but it is usually for PhD candidates who have worked with a particular professor in a particular college - that professor will then lobby his college to give the candidate a scholarship.

Trinity was my first choice on my application, but my University and one of my professors went to Selwyn and suggested I applied for funding. So, I applied for funding from Selwyn which was my second choice on my application at the same time I applied for the course. I got an offer from Trinity but, also got the funding from Selwyn so, I have decided to go to Selwyn.

Hi!

I still haven't been offered a college in Cambridge. I have meet all the conditions (except college) and have been offered a scholarship from one of the university trusts... but still no word from college.
Anyone else that is still waiting? Any idea of how to speed up the process?

I have been offered a college in Oxford though, but I would prefer Cambridge.

Best regards
Mimcho

I'm having the same problem - no college at Cambridge - it seems to take them forever. Oxford seems much more organized - I heard from my college a week after I heard from the Law Faculty. I am still torn between the two though.

@ Joseph1.
I know that Oxford in general has the edge compared to Cambridge. However, I think the difference is subtle and only recognised by British lawyers.

Coming from abroad I prefer to achieve the LLM over the M.Jur as the LLM is widely recognised wheras with the M.Jur I will have to explain that the degree is "a master of law from Oxford - eqaul to the LLM"

In all I expect it to be easier for me to market myself with an LLM from one of the two most recognised universities in Europe than with an rather unknown degree from the better of the two.

(what is more - and not insignificantly; I have a scholarship at Cambridge but none at Oxford)

@Zelda
As I have recieved a scholarship by now it appears that the process has begun.

Hi,

I've been accepted to University College to read for MJur program at Oxford. Does anyone have any experience/useful information with/about Univ College?

Have those of you who have been admitted to BCL/MJur programs received any additional information about registering, living, studying ect. at Oxford (apart from acceptance letters) already or not?

Thanks in advance. Regards

Hallo Jiri,

Univ. is a marvelous College to stay. Depending on your subjects, for example jurisprudence, it is even a great college. I have visited Univ. last October. I have been accepted for the M.Jur. programme at Keble College and have send my acceptance letters to Keble and to the Law Faculty today. What courses do you want to take?

I don't think college makes any difference for study at the BCL/MJur level to be honest. Neither lectures nor tutorials are done through the college.

It seems as though some colleges (Magdalen, Keble, St. Peter's, St. Catherine's, maybe Lincoln) take a disproportionate share of BCL/MJur students. I have heard that Magdalen take around 8-10 BCL students and St. Peter's 12-15 each year, whereas other colleges (Balliol, Queen's) take very few, perhaps only 1 or 2 in any given year.
