What is the relevance of a US LLM in Canada?

Thu Jul 26, 2007 12:14 PM Hi All, I am a Prospective LLM Student and i intend to do my LLM in IP(Intellectual Property or any other lucrative area of Law). However as a foreign trained lawyer,i am all too aware of the really slim chances of a foreign trained lawyer getting a good job in the States despite having an LLM and passing any of the state bars. In being proactive, on completion of my LLM in the States and in the event of no good job prospects, i intend to cross over to Cananda. Please who knows of their Legal Sytem and do their system discriminate against foreign trained lawyers like in the US?

It is probably more difficult to become licenced to practise law in Canada with foreign credentials than it would be in the US. The law societies in each Canadian province require people to have knowledge of the laws of Canada or the province you are in before they licence people to give legal advice on the laws of Canada or the province you are in. Typically, the law societies in Canadian provinces believe that learning about the laws of Canada only happens in Canadian LLB programs.
