job prospects
I am on student visa for 1 year starting LLM in uni baltimore (US & Int Law). How should I increase my chances to get job and work permit after completion of LLM and which state Bar exam should I prepare for? I am in Maryland. Please give yr opinions. I have 4 year experience as a practicing Attorney in litigation in India.

I would say you would have to do very very well at your school to get a job in the US. As we all know JDs have an easier time than LLMs getting jobs in the states but the university of baltimore isnt ranked very well and even their JDs have trouble finding jobs so I would imagine LLMs from the school have an even harder time finding work. I would like to know about the experience of other LLMs about getting job and if anybody can give me some tips how to proceed now. I have already started LLM in Uni of Baltimore. I would also like to know if it is possible to do Jd after finishing LLM? And if yes, how many years do we have study to get Jd after LLM and which universities accept foreign LLM candidates for JD later on?

I went to the admissions office at Ub Law and they said that after completion of the LLM you can sit for the BAR in NYC or Washington. After 5 years of practice in DC you can waive your license to MD. Sun Feb 10, 2008 05:55 PM I also hold a JD from my home country and so after finishing my current master's and the LLM Lotus, I believe that DC and NYC are places where foreign attorneys can easily find a job. |

Jonus:Mon Feb 11, 2008 04:19 AM My comments are: 1) No magic to find a job, just hard work: send your resume to all top 200 law firms, check the job fairs in your school. Talk to your connections from India. Talk to your professors. It will be hard, but we never know; 2) If you find a job, they will tell you which bar you should take. If not, you should take NY. NY is the biggest and most international market, so it is your best shot. If you are admitted to NY, considering your points in the MBE, you may get some other Bars (like DC) without taking another Bar; 3) A lot of schools allow students to get a JD, after the LLM, studying 2 years more. Just keep in mind that you should try to get your JD in the best possible school. The fact that you have a JD will not guarantee your position in the market. Only if you go to really top schools. You shouldnt invest 2 more years of your life and money to get a JD and not find a jod later. This would be the worst situation. All best! |
