Cambridge - the easiest way to pass
Guys,Thu Sep 13, 2007 11:27 AM I am aware of the fact that my post will raise a criticism but I need to know following: 1) What are the subjects which are considered the difficult ones? I must not fail any exam and I have to finish my LLM on time (June 2008), otherwise it would be a disaster for me(I have a contract with my employee who promised me to pay all the cost and set the deadline as well). In other words, I have to choose seminars and lectures in subjects where failing is unusual. 2) What are the subjects where it is not so difficult to have good grades? I know that it is difficult in each subject, but obviously some are tough and some are less tough... my grades may bring me more money from sponsor and I will not need to do some part-time job... I know that Cmabridge is top school and we are in the world competition. However, as a student from Latin America with limited funds, I can not give a priority to my interests and specialization but rather to less tough subjects . I had very good grades in Bolivia, but I have to be pragmatic... Thanks a lot! |

O dear, ok, just to put your mind at ease, it is actually next to impossible to fail the LLM. If you fail one subject, then when calculating your result they assume you got 80%, get your average, and then reduce the overall class by one. So, if using the formula you had an overall 2.1 average, you would be awarded a 2.2. If you fail two subjects then they contact the individual lecturers and see if you deserved to pass and assign an overall grade. There are no repeats. I am not aware of anyone failing overall.Thu Sep 13, 2007 12:09 PM The only subject that I came across where the examiners reports indicated that someone failed was International Sales, and the lecturer in International Banking told us that one year there was a person whom he absolutely had to fail, even though he didnt want to. Really, there are no easy subjects that I can think of. People who did seminars got better grades because there were less people in their subjects and the exams tended to be all essay questions, which they would have been more than prepared for having had to research for the seminars every week. If I were you, I would choose subjects that you may have encountered and done extremely well at in your previous studies, so that you already have a strong foundation and understand most of the concepts already. Of course, this probably translates to picking the subjects you are most interested in, so no need to compromise in the hopes of getting good grades. Whether or not a subject is tough or easy, completely depends on your previous experience. For instance I found Competition extremely difficult because I had no previous knowledge of the subject (I was so stupid, sigh), but lots of other people found it easy because they studied it previously or worked in Competition Law Departments in their law firms back home. Similarly I loved banking and financial law and found it easy to understand and enjoyable, simply because I had a Masters where I had specialised in securities, commercial law and banking law previously. It all depends on what your individual strengths are. There is no easy way to do well, or any particular subject that will guarantee you a first class honours. You are competing against some of the brightest people from the best Universities in the World. They are all going to work hard, everyone wants to do well. If you want good grades then you are just going to have to knuckle down and study your ass off for the year (and even then you might only do average). The marking is quite tough in most subjects and the standard expected extremely high. |

Irishguy,Fri Sep 14, 2007 08:48 PM you deserve the medal of honor for your valuable advices and tips. You know, do not get me wrong, I did not ask because of the laziness or something similar... I am just concerned with financial matters so the pragmatism is not an option in my case. However, I have recently received the list of subject so I will choose something I already know from my UNI. Irishguy, great job and many thanks!!! |
