hi,

i will hopefully graduate in a few months time and i've just started applying for an LLM degree in a few schools in the uk. is there anyone from qmul who graduated from germany? what is the minimum entry requirement in terms of the results of the staatsexamen. how important is the CV (languages, internships, work experience) and the references? this whole process is just exasperating, so i would be happy for any comments! thanx, cem.

I'm applying at the moment as well and I know what you mean by exasperating. Since I'm from Switzerland I can't tell anything about the Staatsexamen. References and CV are important as well, but according to what I have heard and read the the personal statement/essay is at least as important.

hi stephan, are you applying for any other school? i am thinking about king's, soas, ucl and nottingham. i guess the worst thing of the application is the personal statement, since i really don't know what to write.
but i think at the end of the day it really doens't matter which london school i go to (obviously as long as it isn't westminster or metropolitan), although i'd say that king's has a fairly poor course list...

Yes, I'm applying for ucl, lse and - ahem - westminster. I definitely recommend the german book "Der LL.M" by Steffi Balzerkiewicz" (forgot to mention that one before). It contains lots of helpful hints and provides examples of reference letters and cv. I got it and it's excellent.

On the choice of the university: You'll find the ranking of the schools here on the LLMguide pages and then it really depends on your focus of specialisation or what courses you are looking for.

No worries, Westminster is my "safe" application in case I am not accepted at the other universities. I'm applying for human rights/public law specialisation. I have already graduated in Switzerland and I have been working at a data protection office for a few years.

I took the LLM 2005 at QM. The requirement regarding the Staatsexamen was back then 6.5 Punkte. Not sure anything changed. Just asked. They are very well informed about this. Also the References are important.

Don't hesitate if you have further questions.

hey johannes,

thanks for your reply. i'm in a good temper now!! cause i'm really not sure if i can keep my "vb" from the schwerpunkt in the real examen (well, i'm sure i can't...). did you take a specialist course or the general llm? how is qmul? are the classes crowded or do they teach in small groups? i will apply for the public int'l law LLM. do you recommend it? i would be happy to have your comments. c
