UK applicants - how to pay???
Wed Nov 21, 2007 12:49 PM
Hi everyone

I'm hoping someone could help me out on the subject above. The schools that I am applying to require the application fees to be paid in USD by:
1- checks drawn on US bank, or
2- money order

Anyone have any idea how I can go about doing one of these? I've checked the Post Office's website about postal money orders and apparently 'United States' didn't appear in the drop down list of countries accepting British Postal money orders etc. I've got an account with Natwest by the way.

Any idea? HELLLPPP! =)

I had the same problem from Norway. Only worse. I could not find anyone who did money orders, or the price was higher than the fee.

However, I figured out that most schools would let you wire transfer money through your bank (online). I think this is also called Swift. And you need a Swift code, ABA routing number, account number and account name from the school. It should be readily available in the U.K. at least. Or maybe you have a Western Union? I think they can help too.

My problem with all of this were the high fees for doing this from Norway, so I ending up having fees waived.

I used American Express Travellers Cheques. They are just like a cheque from an US Bank. No complaints so far. They are rather cheap too. Cost me arounf 5 € servicing charge for five cheques.

I had the same problem a few weeks ago. What I did was asking the respective admission office about alternative payment methods. None accepted online money transfer, but all accepted Traveler's Cheques.

yeah i would say to go for travellers checks - much cheaper and quicker than money orders (you can get them at international banks / american express) if your school accepts them.

You can just go to your bank and have them make out a cheque in dollars..

walk to counter, give them your cash card and ask for a cheque. They'll make one out drawn on New York Bank. I used Ulster Bank and for a student it was immediate and free.. Halifax charge £14 though and mail it to you so I don't recommend..

Hey, I had the same problem.

I went for US travellers cheques but be warned they only come in $50 dollar increments. Or at least they do at the royal bank of scotland. Anyway the result is that if the app fee is like £65 dollars you have to over pay the amount. The universities do not like this and you have to be quite forceful in telling them that it is the only way you can pay.

Hi Patrick,

Yeah I got my cheques from Thomas Cook and they only issue 50usd denominations. Thus I had to pay extra for Duke. They haven't said anything about that though. Do you think I should email them explaining my situation? I don't mind not getting the overpaid amount back, but should I still explain anyway?

Cheers,
Di

Hey Di,

You may as well send them an email about the situation. It can't hurt your application anyway. Are you only applying to Duke or are you applying anywhere else? They all are slightly different in their attitude. For example I found BC the most accomodating. Whereas Cornell were quite bitter about the surplus money.

Hi Paddy,

Thanks for the advice! I applied to Duke, Cornell and Vanderbilt. Gave Cornell my card details so I won't have to worry about any surplus! Although I am quite concerned coz they have yet to charge my card and as I understand it the application won't be complete until they receive the fee. Did you receive any further emails/notification from Cornell? The last time I checked online status was still 'applied'. Guess I'll have to wait a little longer. Good luck with your applications!

Hey Di,

Guess you just have to keep waiting. I'm sure that if your status is "applied" you'll be fine. I am yet to get an emails/notifications from Cornell. I sent off paper applications though. Sent that away on the 22nd of Dec. So they might not have got them yet.

Good luck with yours too. Who knows, we may even meet next year at Cornell.
